The earliest Christian holy days were built on a Jewish foundation, and Pentecost is one of them. Fifty days after the Jewish Passover is the feast of Shavuot or the feast of Weeks. It celebrates the gift of the Law or Torah to the people of Israel through Moses on Mt. Sinai. Pentecost, celebrated on the 50th day after Easter, marks the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples who were holed up in a room trying to figure out what to do. God’s presence burst in on them with the power of wind and fire. It so overwhelmed and transformed them that they went out into the public square to proclaim the good news of God in Christ Jesus. Jerusalem was filled with pilgrims

from throughout the Jewish world who came to celebrate their acceptance of the Law. This explains the presence of people who spoke different languages in Jerusalem when Peter preached the core Christian message on the first Pentecost. Christians celebrate Pentecost and Jews celebrate Shavuot, the gift of the Spirit and the gift of the law. Last Friday, 54 students of our parish school celebrated their graduation from grade school. In their years at Queen of All Saints School they not only received an excellent academic education but they were also instructed in the truths of our faith and taught how to live as disciples. Most of them received the Sacrament of Confirmation about a month ago. As they go forward in life, we hope and pray that the education and formation they received, and the strength and guidance of the Spirit, may help them become better disciples and work to transform the world. At Pentecost, it is good to remember the transforming effect of the Holy Spirit. When our world looks bleak, when we walk in sadness and anxiety, when nothing seems right, the Spirit of God stirs the energy of joy within us. When restlessness or boredom or disappointment takes hold of us, the Spirit deepens in us the energy of peace. As we struggle to believe in our own gifts and blessings, the Spirit strengthens in us the energy of goodness. When a look of love is all someone needs, the Spirit creates in us the energy of kindness. When our moods are dominated by harshness and our words by disrespect, the Spirit blesses us with the energy of gentleness. May the Spirit enkindle in us the fire of God’s love and all of creation be renewed. Basilica Ceiling Update: Most of us, while in church, cannot help but look heavenward and see this massive structure in place that will enable us to replace the ceiling in the Basilica. The scaffolding is now in place and we will begin the next task of the project. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Nave Ceiling tile and insulation removal Bays 2-8 – May 30 – June 19 Nave Roof and vent inspection Bays 2 -8 - June 20 Nave Ceiling Mock Up Bay 1 – June 12 – 16 Nave Ceiling tile and insulation removal Bay 1 – June 19 – 23 Nave Ceiling panel installation, Bays 8 – 1 June 26 – August 4 Nave Scaffold Removal, Bays 8 – 2 - August 7 – 24 Sanctuary Scaffold Installation – August 21 – September 8 Sanctuary Tile Removal – September 8 – 22 Sanctuary Roof and vent inspection – September 22 Sanctuary Ceiling Panel Installation – September 25 – October 13 Sanctuary Scaffold Removal - October 16 – 27

SPRED: SPecial Religious Education Development

The Queen of All Saints SPRED group has been together since April 2001. Throughout these

years we, the adults, as well as the children, have grown in many ways. We are truly a family and have shared many important occasions together and have witnessed the sacraments of Communion and Con-firmation with some of our special friends.

The SPRED program at QAS consists of about 22 sessions, 11 sessions with only the adult cate-

chists, and the other 11 sessions with the total community, meaning the catechists and our special friends. Each adult catechist joins with a special friend on a 1-to-1 basis during our total community ses-sions. Currently, we have 6 special friends - Calvin, Lucas, Andy, Ryan, Mikolaj, and Evan. MaryBeth Schulian-Macias is the Leader Catechist, Pat Ramos is the Activity Catechist, and Pat Noble, Coleen Martin, Jackie Ceisel, Sheila Foust, Sue Thomas, and Sandra Dilla-Hammer are the Helper Catechists for our 11-17 year old group. We meet on Monday nights in the Holy Name Room for our 2.5 hour ses-sions. If you have any questions regarding the SPRED program at QAS, please feel free to call Sandra Dilla-Hammer, Parish Chairperson, at 773-777-4719, or email at [email protected]

Children and adults with disabilities have the right to grow in faith. Our incredible SPRED

ministry invites us to walk together with a friend on a journey of faith to discover God in the presence of one another. The SPRED group wishes to express our thanks to the Pastoral Staff and the parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica for your continued support and thoughtful prayers.

The work on the transepts will go on simultaneously and we will keep you informed of the dates. The work on the ceiling in the Choir loft will be done after Christmas. As you all know, sometimes our best laid plans may not pan out the way we would like or want. We will keep you informed throughout the entire project. Fr. Simon Braganza Parish Administrator

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY?

REASON 69

© Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard

Teachers often say that they wanted to be a teacher so that they could touch the future. That conviction is part of why parents want to be parents. It’s reasonable to assert that most people have an urge to touch the future, even if they don’t choose professions that clearly do just that. There is something inside every human person that urges us to reach beyond the present. We have an innate sense that we were made for something greater, something bigger, something even beyond however many years we have on this earth. That innate sense is our spirit, our soul; and it’s just as real as our body. As a church we are a community of bodies and souls who are able to touch the future when we celebrate the Sunday Eucharist. And even more remarkably in the Eucharist, the future touches us. We eat the bread of a future world, heaven, and a future time, the Reign of God, when we receive Holy Communion.

Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together

Pentecost Sunday—June 4, 2017

Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure,

in response to the great gifts God has given us.

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7 To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and let Him in! Open your heart and be grateful for all the gifts God has given us. Regardless of your circumstance, God has given us all blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift back to God. Generously sharing our gifts keeps us more “God-centered” and less “self-centered”.

Stewardship—Our Summer Projects As stewards of our parish’s physical resources we are careful to keep our buildings and outside spaces safe and well-maintained. We have already alerted our parishioners to the sudden situation involving our Basilica ceiling and the steps we were forced to take to replace the ceiling in a quick and cost-effective way. But that’s not all we have to take care of this spring and summer. Just consider: Gym doors—replacement of original wooden doors after 65 years Womens Washroom at NE corner of gym—complete refurbishing Basilica exterior—inspection and repair of mortar, where indicated STEM Lab—installation in former Jubilee Room, with help of proceeds

from UPP Raise the Paddle Keene Building—repair of roof flashing Copper roofs above Basilica stairwells alongside vestibule—replacement

of original roofs Lemont Building windows—replacement at Girls Washroom and STEM

Lab The oldest of our buildings is now 77 years old. Many of our parishioners know the joys and challenges of owning a vintage home. Our parish buildings are our spiritual home and we ask for your support as we keep them in a first class condition.

Our Capital Campaign

From Generation To Generation: how to fulfill your pledge

The best way to fulfill your pledge is

to use the self addressed envelope included with your periodic pledge reminders:

Archdiocese of Chicago

Gift Processing PO Box 7256

Kensington CT 06037-7256

A favor—if instead you decide to drop your payment into the collection basket,

please use a plain envelope clearly marked “CAPITAL CAMPAIGN”

and use your capital campaign account number (not your weekly envelope number)

on your check.

Our parish needs our help especially now. We realize that our parish’s calls for our help seem never to take a break. We’ve just finished our United Parish Program event, and thanks to the gener-osity of our parishioners we can look forward to finishing off our fiscal year on June 30 on budget. At the same time, however, we have to look ahead to the coming fiscal year and find we need to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sun-day offering to pay for the cost of our recently begun Basilica ceiling project, which is an unexpected and very significant need, and is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is: From Generation to Generation. Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninterrupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the chal-lenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved!

Thank you for all you do for our parish and please know that you are always welcome here!

The Sacrament of Baptism Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new members into the Body of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests.

The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament.
