Honourary Parade Marshall: Peter Godwin Chance

Another year has come around and we are now celebrating

Canada Day in Sidney with many wonderful events.

Peninsula Celebrations Society tries to develop new and interesting ideas at our events. This year we start on June 30, 2014 at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the Thrifty’s Food Community Barbecue organized by the Town of Sidney.

The BBQ is located in Beacon Park at the foot of Beacon Avenue. Donations of $5 accepted for Sidney

Lions Food Bank. Mayor Larry Cross will

open the ceremonies after we sing O Canada to start our celebrations and we will be serving cake.

This year Old Black Rum will be entertaining us

with music followed by our Fireworks Extravaganza done to music.

July 1 Canada Day starts with the traditional pancake breakfast at Mary Win-spear Center served by the Sidney Lions Club starting at 9 a.m.

The parade will start at 11:30 a.m. this year, a small change of time, and then make its way down to Iroquois Park for family events which are all free. There will be food vendors, dog show, hamster balls, face painting, food eating contest and hockey games for children of all ages.

To complete the day make your way down to the foot of Beacon Avenue at around 4 p.m. to watch the Build-a-Boat contest. Every year we get to cheer our favorite team to successfully complete the course and enjoy the sink-ing crafts while their crew try to stay dry.

We are certainly lucky to live in such a wonder-ful area and community so come out and see your neighbours and friends and enjoy the day.

A regular band at Mary’s Bleue Moon restaurant nearly every Thursday night, Old Black Rum will go for a small change of venue on Canada Day.

On July 1 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., the local East coast, Celtic and Folk Bluegrass-inspired band plays in Sid-ney’s Iroquois Park. CANADA DAYCELEBRATIONS Take part in the Canada Day

celebrations, to be held at Bea-con Park June 30.

Things get under way with a parade of colour parties and a bagpiper. The procession departs the Town of Sidney’s cenotaph at 7:15 p.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by the cutting of the big Canada Day cake at around 8 p.m.

Later that evening, at 10 p.m., come out and enjoy the Musical Fireworks Extrava-ganza sponsored by the Town of Sidney.

SIDNEY SIDEwALk SALE JuNE 29 Kick the celebration off

early on Sunday, June 29 at the Sidney Sidewalk Sale.

The Sale is making a come-back this year and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Sidney.

More than 40 businesses are participating. There will be live music on the streets in two dif-ferent locations throughout the Sale event. This is the biggest one day sale of the year for Sidney merchants, so you do not want to miss this.

There’s a new addition to the Town of Sidney Canada Day celebrations in Beacon Park this year.

The Victoria Filipino-Canadian As-sociation Sampaguita Dance Group will perform on stage at 7 p.m. — right before the official opening ceremonies for Sidney Days.

The Sampaguita Dance Group has two sets of performers — junior and intermediate dancers — and show rural, Spanish-influenced, mountain and tribal dances.

We love a parade.

How do you celebrate the most important day of the year in style? With a parade of course!

And this year’s Canada Day Parade promises to be better than ever — sponsored by the Peninsula Co-op.

Organized by the Peninsula Celebra-tions Society for the 31st consecutive year, the parade features live music, marching bands, colourful floats, live animals and much more. Come out to see your friends and neighbours march in the parade.

Don’t forget to bring your camera. The fun starts at 11:30 a.m. with the

crowd singing O Canada, then the first float leads off from Beacon Avenue and Resthaven Drive.

The parade route heads east, then down Second Street, all the way to Ocean Avenue. There’s a special viewing area for folks in wheelchairs at the corner of Fifth and Beacon.

As always, taking in the parade is free. But if you want to make a valuable

contribution, help the Sidney Lions Food Bank by donating non-perishable food items or making a cash donation. Volunteers from the Peninsula Mission Community Church dressed in red food bank T-shirts will be accepting donations along the parade route.

Slegg Lumber has been providing some of the biggest laughs and best entertainment at Sidney Days for the past 29 years.

Watch brave “sailors” paddle their plywood crafts around the buoys off Glass Beach, vying for the title of winner of the Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat contest: or failing that, come home with the trophy for first to sink.

Boats are built of plywood, duct tape and Styrofoam, no power or air tools are allowed, and contestants must even build their own paddles.

Make sure you check out the 29th an-nual Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat

contest on the Sidney waterfront on July 1. Building starts right after the parade at around 12 noon and runs to 4:30

p.m. The race starts right after that (be at the waterfront well before 4:30 for the best spots), all under the watch-

ful eye of the Saanich Peninsula Coast Guard Auxil-iary. The first place team takes home

$100 each, second $75 each, third $50

each and trophies are awarded for first to sink, crowd pleaser and best de-sign. Make your way to the beach early

to get a great spot to watch all the thrills, spills and action of this

Sidney Days favourite.

Slegg Build-a-Quick-Boat contest

Celebrate Canada’s birthday at this year’s Sidney Days and watch the spectacular fireworks set to music!

On June 30 at around 10 p.m. (or whenever it gets just the right amount of dark), the Sidney waterfront lights up with a spectacular fireworks show — set to music.

This free event takes place on the Sidney waterfront and is best viewed between Port Sidney and Tulista Park.

Bring your stick and helmet and face off against members of the Sidney North Saanich R.C.M.P, Central Saanich Police, Sidney firefighters and members of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Peninsula Panthers.

It’s road hockey time on Tuesday, July 1 in Iroquois Park. The first game is at 1 p.m. for kids ages 6 and under. Game 2 at 2 p.m. is for kids ages 7 to 15.

This year the Family Fun Fair is celebrating 31 years of community events hosted by the Peninsula Celebrations Society. Following the parade, head to Iroquois Park in Sidney for an afternoon of fun and entertainment. Bring a picnic, or purchase goodies at the Lions Lunch Box among other food vendors.

Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the Sidney Rotary Club’s Games of Chance. Kids may need to let off a little steam. Set them free at the Panorama Recreation

Centre’s very popular inflatable castle and obstacle course. Look for the Picasso of face-painters, Susi Sunshine and her magical palette. You’ll see the return of the Dog look-a-like contest, pure-breds, mutts and their

owners are welcome to participate. The show runs from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the field. Registration is at 1 p.m.

All this, some clowning around and who knows what other special guests may drop in? Plan to spend your afternoon at the Family Fun Fair.

Sea King FlyoverIf you’re in Iroquois Park at

around 2 p.m. on July 1 — or almost anywhere in downtown Sidney for that matter — look to the sky for a flypast by members of 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron in one of their Sea King eggbeaters.

The squadron flies out of their base of operations at the Victoria International Airport. The size and abilities of the Sea King will be sure to im-press the kids and fans of local aviation.

Having a ballThe free kids games in Iro-

quois Park on July 1 will have you rolling around the stitches. The popular Hampster Ball by Games U2 is back. Get inside and try to keep on rollin’.
