DISCOVER NORTH SAANICH

North Saanich, one of the most beautiful and diverse municipalities in the reigon, will usually be the rst community visitors will exerpience when visiting. Both main travel entrance points on Southern Vancouver Island, the Swartz Bay Terminal for BC Ferries and the Victoria International Airport, are located here.

We welcome visitors and have much to oer them. A signicant portion of our land is agricultural with many varied and active farms and other rural attractions. Not only do these oer a supply of locally produced food, but they provide a charming contrast to our residential areas. Energetic volunteers host our well established Saturday morning farm market at St. John’s United Church on West Saanich Road. Many farms oer sales of produce, breads, preservatives and meats at this market and you may even nd local jewellery and art. Our annual farm Flavour Trail event will be help August 24 and 25 this year oering many opportunities to tour local farm, winery and restaurant venues.

Our walking trails are extensive and appealing, covering most areas in the municipality and ranging from those easily walkable to more challenging areas in Horth Hill Park and Dean Park, well worth the eort for the views. Other parks oer a variety of attractions, including magnicent views of our shores, and our native plants and trees. We have produced a Trails, Parks and Beaches Guide which is available at the Municipal Hall to visitors and residents.

In addition to these aspects, our 45 km shoreline extends around the municipality, attracting many boaters and shing enthusiasts, and serviced by local marinas. The Panorama Recreation Centre oers swimming, tennis, skating and other tness facilities. There are two local golf courses, Glen Meadows and Ardmore.

The opportunity to indulge in such a variety of leisure activities is enhanced in North Saanich by the unspoiled beauty of our rural and marine areas. We hope you have a wonderful experience visiting North Saanich.

Mayor Larry Cross

I encourage you to join us for Sidney Days as we celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday and our wonderful community of

Sidney-by-the-Sea.

Celebrations begin Sunday, June 30th at 4:00 pm with the Thrifty Foods Community BBQ in Beacon Park. Following, there will be live music, a citizenship reaffirmation ceremony, free cake for everyone and of course fireworks!

Peninsula Celebrations Society, which is celebrat-ing their 30th anniversary is delighted to have Marge Nelson — volunteer extraordinaire — as the 2013 Honourary Sidney Parade Marshall.

Marge Nelson, born in Woodstock, New Brunswick moved to Victoria with her husband John in 1995. Sadly, John passed away in 2000.

Volunteering seemed to come naturally to Marge; she learned from her mother who spent a lifetime helping members of the community.

As a member of the St. Andrews church, Marge will-ingly does pastoral care. She has worked at the Gorge Hospital for five years, where she continued to ensure that those who left the hospital were well looked after. She also worked at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital for seven years and from contacts within the Church she continues to visit hospital shut-ins.

Reverend Osita Oluigbo as-signed Marge five people in need of care. One of these people is a special lady with cerebral palsy who has depended on Marge for 10 years. Marge assists her with her daily needs: feeding, banking and outings to restaurants.

Marge tells of an occasion several years ago when the minister of a church found a gentleman sleeping in his car. The church gave him food and shelter and then helped him find work. He became a fixture in their soup kitchen for many years. He was a wonderful friend to all who had helped him.

Marge has a wonderful, quiet demeanour about her. One can easily see why people would warm to her. She is a true humanitarian!

A message from the president

Honourary Parade Marshall: Marge Nelson

You’re in for a fantastic program of fun and exciting

events in this year’s Sidney Days. This is our 30th An-niversary Year for Penin-sula Celebrations Society.

On Sunday, June 30 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., celebrations will kick of with the Com-munity Dinner organized and hosted by the Town of Sidney.

The dinner will be held on the patio of the Beacon Pavillion Park at the foot of Beacon Avenue.

We will have the Oath of Allegiance, followed by O Canada, the Mayor’s speech and a piece of cake.

There will be pre-

fireworks entertainment provided by Phil Turpin’s popular band, The Island-ers — performing for the first time at the Beacon Park Pavilion on the water-front.

After that, the Fireworks Extravaganza begins.

The next day, Monday,

July 1, Canada Day gets under way a little earlier — with events kicking off at 9 a.m. with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and family-friendly events run-ning all day long.

Wow! It’s more than 12 continuous hours of fun and celebration.

I would like to person-ally thank all our sponsors who over the years have supported us and one in particular is Thrifty Foods. This company has given us a large sum of money and supported our Canada Day and Sparkles parade for 10 years.

We are sorry to lose them but want to thank them

sincerely as these types of events would not happen in our community if we did not have large support from many companies and mu-nicipalities, like the Town of Sidney.

Everyone loves the community feeling in this district and supporting the sponsors that come on board to keep fun events.

Please remember them when we show you the list and let’s keep recogniz-ing and appreciating their generosity.

So let’s go out and party, enjoy!

Celebrate Canada’s birthday at this year’s Sidney Days and watch the spectacular fireworks set to music!

On June 30 at around 10 p.m. (or whenever it gets just the right amount of dark), the Sidney waterfront lights up with a spectacular fireworks show — set to music.

This free event takes place on the Sidney waterfront and is best viewed between Port Sidney and Tulista Park.

A regular band at Mary’s Bleue Moon restaurant nearly every Thursday night, Old Black Rum will go for a small change of venue on Canada Day.

On July 1 from noon to 4 p.m., the local East coast, Celtic and Folk Bluegrass-inspired band plays in Sidney’s Iroquois Park. Old Black Rum consists of Bill Collins, Heather Collins, Peter Jones, Dennis Wightman and Steve Martin and they are looking forward to playing music for the Canada Day crowds.

Sunday Community Barbecue at the beach!

Celebrate Canada along the streets of SidneyWe love a parade.

How do you celebrate the most important day of the

year in style? With a parade of course! And this year’s Canada Day Parade

promises to be better than ever — sponsored by the Peninsula Co-op.

Organized by the Peninsula Celebrations Society for the 30th consecutive year, the parade features live music, marching bands, colourful floats, live animals and much more. Come out to see your friends and neighbours march in the parade.

Don’t forget to bring your camera. The fun starts at 11 a.m. with the

crowd singing O Canada, then the first

float leads off from Beacon Avenue and Resthaven Drive.

The parade route heads east, then down Second Street, all the way to Ocean Avenue. There’s a special viewing area for folks in wheelchairs at the corner of Fifth and Beacon.

As always, taking in the parade is free.

But if you want to make a valuable contribution, help the Sidney Lions Food Bank by donating non-perishable food items or making a cash donation. Volunteers from the Peninsula Mission Community Church dressed in red food bank T-shirts will be accepting donations along the parade route.

Slegg lumber has been providing some of the biggest laughs and best entertainment at Sidney Days for the past 28 years.

Watch brave “sailors” paddle their plywood crafts around the buoys off Glass Beach, vying for the title of winner of the Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat contest: or failing that, come home with the trophy for first to sink.

Boats are built of plywood, duct tape and Styrofoam, no power or air tools are allowed, and contestants must even build their own paddles.

Make sure you check out the 28th annual Slegg Lumber Build-a-Quick-Boat contest on the Sidney waterfront on July 1. Building starts right after the parade and runs to 4 p.m. The race starts at 4:30, all under the watchful eye of the Saanich Peninsula Coast Guard Auxiliary. The first place team takes home $100 each, second $75 each, third $50 each and trophies are awarded for first to sink, crowd pleaser and best design. Make your way to the beach early to get a great spot to watch all the thrills, spills and action of this Sidney Days favourite.

Due to the success of last year’s road hockey games, we’re doing it again! The first game at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 1 is for kids ages 6 and under. Game 2 at 2 p.m. is for kids ages 7 to 15.

Bring your stick and helmet and face off against members of the Sidney North Saanich R.C.M.P and Central Saanich Police with the help of our Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Peninsula Panthers players.

This year the Family Fun Fair is celebrating 30 years of community events hosted by the Peninsula Celebrations Society. Following the parade, head to Iroquois Park in Sidney for an afternoon of fun and entertainment. Bring a picnic, or purchase goodies at the Lions Lunch Box among other food vendors.

Feeling lucky? Try your hand at the Sidney Rotary Club’s Games of Chance. Kids may need to let off a little steam. Set them free at the Panorama Recreation

Centre’s very popular inflatable castle and obstacle course. Look for the Picasso of face-painters, Susi Sunshine and her magical palette. You’ll see the return of the Dog look-a-like contest, pure-breds, mutts and their

owners are welcome to participate. The show runs from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the field. Registration is at 1 p.m.

The Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre will have their mascot, stick on tattoos and an education station for the kids. All this, some clowning around, a roving magician — and who knows what other special guests may drop in?

Plan to spend your afternoon at the Family Fun Fair.
