We hope to see you there! As we look ahead to September, this is just a reminder to our parents that all students will find out who their homeroom teacher is on the first day of school. Class placement is very much dependent upon the number of students registered within a certain grade and as this number changes over the summer, the students within the class also change. In addition, due to staffing that also occurs over the summer there is a possibility that a teacher may change assignments between now and the first day of school. When determining class placements we consider learning style, teaching style, social relationships and parent input. It is a very thoughtful process, one in which there is much discussion by staff and administra- tion. This is not the last newsletter of this school year as one will be sent home during the last week of school with some important updates to all parents. So stay tuned…. CANADA DAY Spirit Day

Students are asked to wear red and white on the

last day of school as we celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday

with our own spirit day!

Thurs. June 29, 2017—Early Dismissal at 11:30 am

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achieve-ment and well-being. On Thursday, June 29, 2017, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success. As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:30 am. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transporta-tion at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Thanks to all staff and students who participated in our school Track and Field Meet on June 1st and congratulations to all our students who partic-ipated in the day’s events. These preliminary events helps us to select our team for the Area Track and Field Meet taking place on June 13 and 14(weather permitting). Good luck to all those athletes who will be representing Gib-son at the Area Track and Field Meet.

Eco—Council News

Terrific Family Environmental Stewardship Projects

The Great Plastic Bag Grab Is On! Our Gibson Eco-council has been hard at work collecting coloured plastic shopping bags for recycling at a special facility! Students are encouraged to ask their families and friend to donate plastic shopping bags to this great cause. Winning schools can win cash prizes for school projects from the event sponsors. Our bags will be delivered to a local WalMart on June 4th for delivery to the recycling facility. Last year our school collected over 3000 bags!

Keep collecting and let’s keep counting!

Operation Pollination! Plant some Bee-friendly plants in your garden! Only 50 cents per plant.

The Eco-council and garden club are conducting a plant sale to provide Gibson families with bee-friendly plants for the garden or balcony. The cost per plant is 50 cents to cover the cost of materials. Last year, our school sold over 200 plants to our school community. This year, our edible flowering plants include scarlet runner bean plants, chives and sweet marjoram (oregano). Our native species plant will be the very popular Black-eyed Susan flowers.

Order forms will be going home starting May 29th and plants will be delivered during the second week of June.

Message from Our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you for all that you do to strengthen our schools and commu-nities. This is a good time to celebrate your child’s achievements over the past year. One of our goals in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture and caring and learning.” That includes a culture that emphasizes engagement and positive rela-tionships among all the members of the school community – students, staff members, families and community mem-bers. You, as parents/guardians, are our most important partners when it comes to education. The support you have provided to your child throughout this past school year will help to strengthen our schools and make a difference to your child’s learning. I encourage you to continue engaging your child in learning throughout the summer, and to help them to see the con-nections between what they are learning in school and the world around them. There are so many opportunities to do this over the summer, whether that’s planning a budget with your child, enjoying the natural beauty in York Region, reading a book or visiting local sites. Whatever your plans are this summer, I wish you all a successful end to the school year, and a safe and enjoyable summer.

Anna DeBartolo

The 13th Annual Richmond Hill/Vaughan Battle of the Books, spon-sored by the Canadian Federation of University Women, Vaughan and Richmond Hill Public Library took place on May 10th, at Herbert H. Carnegie Public School. Our Gibson team placed fourth in the competition! Congratulations to our team members; Yash, Adsayan, Ishmul, Sanaa, Shane, Annie and Lily. Our team showed a genuine love of reading, perseverance, dedication and team spirit as they pre-pared for the reading trivia-style battle over a three month peri-od. During this time all team members shared the responsibility of reading twenty-five Canadian fiction/nonfiction books, making de-tailed jot notes and studying details about the themes, characters, settings, important quotes etc.

Students are asked to return all library books by Friday June 10th. Overdue notices will be dis-tributed the week of June 19th. Students are re-sponsible for returning all materials that have been signed out. A fee will be charged for lost/damaged materials. Please note, students will be unable to sign books out in the Fall if they have any overdue books. It is especially important for grade 1 French Immersion and grade 8 students to make sure all materials are returned or signing out privileges will be suspended at their new school until materials are returned. If you have any questions or concerns please call Mrs. D’Angelo at the school.

Medication

Please make arrangements to have your child’s medication picked up on June 29th or earlier. Any medication left at school after June 30th will be discarded.
