Senior Leadership Team Editorial

Welcome readers to June's edition of the gazette, and welcome to summer! As I am writing this, we have three weeks to go until the end of the summer term, and the end of the academic year 2016/17. Each year I say this, and each year it's the case, that this is our best year yet. The team here at IES just keep growing, expanding in their creativity, knowledge and expertise, and - in turn - modelling standards of excellence for our young people. In short, we all love working at IES and it is so rewarding to see the progress our students make, and at this time of year we really reflect and assess the year as a whole. A truly outstanding year. Why is this? Here are some of the ways:

Our Year 11's have taken the most number of GCSE subjects collectively... ever! ALL students have sat ALL exams! Not only have Year 11's and 12's taken GCSE's, but have also submitted coursework for a range of

Entry Level subjects, Arts Awards and also the prestigious ASDAN diplomas. Our Year 11's have grown and matured and have been actively engaged in the exams process,

undertaking homework, revision sessions and listening carefully to the guidance of their teachers. Our Year 11's (5 leavers this year) have secured a place in a college of their choice

undertaking a course they want to take. Attendance remains at around 90% - with many students achieving 100% consistently. Many staff also have 100% attendance records. We have recently acquired a space for a sensory room that will be decorated over the summer. We now work directly with SEVEN Local Authorities, with links to a further two. We have 20 students between the ages of 10-19. We have offered holiday care and this has helped and supported many of our students keep the

pace and routine of school.

I could go on as the successes of your children and the team here at IES are many. We are all very proud of each and every one of them, and always look at progress from a young persons' starting point, with clear records and maps plotting achievement. One of these is called a 'PASS' assessment, which we share with you at meetings - looking at the barriers to learning. We also assess students' learning styles. Many of our students at IES are kinaesthetic (like to learn by doing with their own hands); and - of course, we love learning in the great outdoors! You will see lots of examples in this month's edition of the IES gazette. So amongst these pages, please have a look at some of the wonderful learning and teaching that goes on at IES day-in, day-out. You will also shortly be receiving your child's full reports for this term and this year - including any work experience or off-site courses or therapies undertaken. But I encourage you to also look at the stuff that makes 2016-2017 another bumper year. The stuff that is more difficult to show in graphs and pie-charts... The relationships and friendships formed, the trust given, the give and take, the negotiations, the boundaries, the patience, the understanding of behaviours and emotions - the laughter and the tears. We really are a big family with all of the up's and down's in any given day, and with our recent closed-page, safe-space on Facebook we also like to share daily with you some of the stuff that makes us remember each day with a smile. So - if you haven't joined please do. Thank you for your likes, support and encouragement. We could not do it without you. Leanne Beardmore M(Ed) PGCE BA(Hons) TEFL Headteacher IES

The 'Get to know the IES Team' feature is where each month a different member of the IES team will be interviewed for you to find out more about them. This month we interviewed Emma.

Q: So, how long have you been working at IES for, and who are you key worker for?

A: I started at the start of April and I am key worker for Ahmed.

Q: What's the best thing about working at IES?

A: That everyone is really friendly; if you ever need anything everyone is really helpful.

Q: Who is your hero?

A: My hero is Jim Carrey; he has inspired me to keep positive and happy even in the worst of situations.

Q: What do you do to relax?

A: I enjoy going for long walks in the countryside with friends.

Q: If you were an animal for a day what animal would you choose, and why?

A: I would love to be a squirrel because they seem to have so much fun climbing trees all day.

Q: Name 3 things you couldn't live without.

A: My phone, my family and food.

Q: What song best sums you up?

A: “Call on me” by Ryan Riback

Q: What is one thing you are looking forward to?

A: Getting my own husky puppy called Pedro.

Lewis: If you were a tree and you had to be chopped down and made into paper, which book would you like to be?

A: The diary of a wimpy kid by Jeff Kinney because it’s really funny.

Q: Final question, what's your funniest/best moment at IES?

A: Taking the students to the farm and seeing some of them scream when holding the baby chicks.

If you would like to suggest questions for next month, write down your question and put it in the suggestion box at school, or, tell your key worker who can pass it on to the Magazine Team.

Read about the latest dish being cooked up at IES. You can find the recipe, pictures, and reviews below - giving you a great insight into the culinary skills at school. In this edition Abbie made chocolate chip cookies.

A retro recipe for chocolate-studded biscuits with a soft squidgy middle - make plenty as they're guaranteed to be a hit!

Ingredients 150g salted butter, softened 80g light brown muscovado sugar 80g granulated sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 large egg 225g plain flour ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ¼ tsp salt 200g plain chocolate chip or chunks Method

1. 1. 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking

paper. 2. 2. Put the butter and sugars into a bowl and beat until creamy. Beat in the vanilla extract and

At IES we actively encourage healthy eating with all of our students. What better way to celebrate summer solstice with a school trip to a local strawberry farm to enjoy strawberry picking. The students all had a great time and took some of the wares home for their family to enjoy. Obviously a few had to be tested along the way! The following day at school the students made fresh cream scones to accompany the strawberries. All of this was part of our continuing British Values within school life.

This is Abigail eating her scone; unfortunately we were not quick enough with the camera to get photos as the students devoured them!

Here is Charlotte selecting the ripest strawberries. A full basket of fresh strawberries.

“Try before you buy”.

Armed Forces Day takes place Saturday 24th June 2017 and in anticipation of this event, we took IES students off site and over to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire in order to look at the site and discuss the effect that war and conflict has on society. The students walked through the different areas of the park, looking at the memorials, and bonding as a group. It was a good day for it, avoiding the rain. We got to see plenty of serving and veteran personnel too, as they were preparing for the armed forces day event taking place the very next day. See www.thenma.org.uk for more information and event details.

First aid has been continuing here at IES. Destiny has managed to earn some certificates from St. John Ambulance for her effort and demonstrations of knowledge during sessions. Great job Destiny, well done for your concentration and effort. Michael also managed to get in on the action, showing off his ability to put learning in to practice with Destiny and the recovery position. Let's hope neither of you don't have to use the skills you've learned, but at least we know we'd be safe in your hands!

A big warm welcome to IES new student Jeff right, from Solihull.

Jeff has been able to visit the ThinkTank science museum in Birmingham this month as part of his 6 week induction. Here you can see him enjoying a selection of the hands-on activities available from the many floors of science related resources and learning materials. It was a great day and Jeff told me it's one of the best places to visit in Birmingham. Why not go for a visit yourself and be inspired?

Both staff and students enjoyed playing with the face paints during the school enrichment day. They enjoyed taking it in turns to paint each other with beautiful creative and artistic designs.

Students at IES Cross Street had the opportunity to take part in an African Enrichment Day. They learned about what it is like to go to school in Africa, what they do during burial ceremonies, tasted African food, designed some African artwork and jewellery and finished off by watching The Lion King!

Pupils created their own African masks (below) today with a focus on symmetry during the African enrichment day. Beautiful work!

The students, Charlotte and Lloyd were impressed with the snake skin. We all felt and described the texture.

Sampling a delicious range of Northern African Food.

Social stories - Lorenzo has been identifying our needs as humans and why people have individual needs. Lorenzo suggested some of our most important needs were drink, food, exercise and shelter. Lorenzo then enjoyed planning a party for school, Lorenzo made a long list of things we would need for the party and also spoke about his food list which was very yummy and catered for all the staff and students here at IES!

In Science Abigail has been looking at the function of the skeleton and identifying the different bones. Abigail learnt the correct terminology for our bones and labelled them on a picture. Well done Abigail!

Destiny and Abigail can be seen brushing up on their basketball skills together down at the local park during a PE lesson. We worked on different types of passes and ball and coordination skills.

Ahmed explores new textures and surfaces. He is using various materials within English and Art & Crafts lessons to make his work more interesting and fun!

D&T - Lorenzo had to construct models using spaghetti and marshmallows. Lorenzo had to use a lot of numeracy and logical thinking skills.

Here are some photos from this month's creative maths lessons. These are from Abigail (left) and Lorenzo (right). We were investigating symmetry and what shapes we can make with straight lines. They make a lovely display.

Charlie has been attending a work related learning placement at a training Hair and Beauty Salon. Charlie is seen here learning different hair-styling techniques, learning how to wax and how to apply false eye-lashes. (Models anyone?) Charlie is really working hard towards her Level 1 qualification and enjoying every moment of it.

Year 11's celebrating final exam success with some of the IES team. Well done to Whitney and Kaine.

A huge thank you from all of the IES staff for the personalised cards and presents received from Kaine and family. He will be missed but we send him all the very best of luck for Coventry City College in September.

And a big WELL DONE to Leon.

Leon has managed to complete another year at Coombe Abbey and was happy to recently attend the celebration lunch at Coventry Guildhall, as invited by the Work Related Learning team. Great effort Leon, well done for putting such a positive attitude into your learning, it's a great achievement. And another student off to college!

Abigail has been learning "sport words" in French. She has been putting these to the test. Abigail was able to say "Je joue au basket dans la parc" which means "I play basketball at the park" Trés bien!!

One to make you smile...here’s Charlotte who does not let the weather stop her enjoying herself on her outdoor educational science trip.

P.E-Kamaladin had a challenge of walking 10000 steps and achieved it. He used a stepometer whilst visiting lots of different attractions in Coventry. Kamaladin learnt about the History of Coventry Memorial Park and he visited COSCO, somewhere Kamaladin has an interest of working when he is older. Kamaladin learnt that there is a COSCO all over the world and one interesting fact is that hot dogs are £1.50 regardless of the currency and the cost has not risen in 30 years. Lets hope they stay at this great price even post Brexit!

Ahmed (right) has been working hard on his social skills, on this farm visit he was to identify at least two sensory preferences and tolerate the feel of at least two different textures whilst managing distractions in a social environment. Ahmed had a great interaction with the lambs.

Jack has been busy again in the kitchen putting all of his healthy eating theory into practice. Jack made a delicious nutritious chicken stir fry. (See below)

Lloyd (above) visited The Midland Air Museum as part of his educational trip. Lloyd learnt a lot about what types of planes were used during the war. This plane is a Jet Prostar.
