P resident’s Message Well it has happened…..Havasu hit 100 degrees. Time to put the jeeps away for a few months until it cools off. But before you cover up that vehicle for the summer why not crawl under it to check all the nuts & bolts and grease all those working parts that need

it. If you aren’t the mechanical type, I am sure the local auto repair establishments would appreciate your business.

This month is a special day for the Fathers across the country. On July 19, 1910, the governor of the U.S. state of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day.” However, it was not until 1966 when, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when

President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. HAPPY FATHERS DAY. Most of our winter visitors have headed back to their home state and some of us who live here full time are also getting the urge to leave for cooler weather. Then there are the brave souls who stick around most of the summer and seem to find ways to stay cool. Remember to take lots of pictures of your activities this summer and send them to the newsletter Editor, Tim Maskell. GRAND MESA JEEP CLUB Grand Junction, Colorado

Grand Mesa Jeep Club is located in very unique setting for 4-wheel drive adventure loving enthusiasts. Within an hour and a half are some of the most spectacular scenic trails and some of the most extreme rock crawling trails in the United States of America. With that in mind, the created Rock Junction, a three day off-road event. Participants drive their own 4WD vehicle on family friendly group trail ride. Each evening features a BBQ hosted by a member of the Grand Mesa Jeep Club giving participants a chance to visit and tell tales of the days adventures. Copper Basin / Monument Peak May 6, 2016

Could not have asked for any better weather for a jeep ride but it would have been nice to have a lot less whoop-tee-doos, but we survived. We took in all the usual sites on this run, Horse head rock, the Copper Basin mine, view of Copper Basin reservoir, the scenic red rock area and of course Monument Peak. Everyone did a great job of tire placement, especially our novice lady driver, so we had no problems. Thank you to Tom Bunnell for being the tail gunner. Willie Williams, trail boss

ROULETTE MINE Ten jeeps with 19 H4W members left Sara Park on Saturday, March 12 for a trip to the Roulette Mine and Whipple Wash area of California for a day in the sun and desert. Several of our group had not been on this trip so the area and information was new to them. After a brief stop at the parking area above Parker Dam where the history of the dam was relayed to them, we began our journey. Our first stop was to the “money cache” where it was observed that more coins, including Canadian and Chinese, were found. Leaving there we traveled to our lunch destination where we spent about 45 minutes enjoying great conversation and fellowship. From there we went on to the small canyon that reminded some of our group of Titus Canyon in Death Valley. The large cave where we stopped next enticed none of us to try to drive into and out of, but several walked into the cave to look around. Our trip out through Whipple Wash was very easy as the wash has been smoothed over by the weather. At the end of our run we took a short side trip to an abandoned mine for a quick look-see before airing up and ending our day. Many thanks goes to Dave and Sandy Merrill for tail gunning and to my steadfast navigator and resident historian Bill Mitschele. Thanks also goes to the folks who went along on this journey. Is it just us or is there a lot of extra, "CRAZY" going around lately? It is political silly season in Utah. During this season we hear all sorts of things from those running for office and their supporters. So much of it is complete baloney. A lot is happening on the public land front and it's increasingly harder to tell who is a friendly and who is a foe. Yes the political soap opera of, "As the Public Lands Turns" continues on. You never know which one of our elected representatives really cares and which one doesn't. Who has ulterior motives and who doesn't. Well, actually we do, but we aren't looking to pick any fights on that topic today. The one thing we do know for sure is we remain committed to protecting your access to use and enjoy public land responsibly. There have been key times over the last 2 decades when USA-ALL played important roles in policy discussions and legal actions. There really has never been a more critical point in the recent public land use debates than now. USA-ALL needs your help to keep up and improve our efforts. Continued

Monthly Update: Is a New Monument Coming?


Recently we have been discussing many things with knowledgeable folks related to the effort to transfer public lands to the states and Congressman Bishop's Public Land Initiative (PLI). From our recent findings we are prepared to make a prediction. We believe it is highly likely that President Obama will designate the Bears Ears region as a 1.9 million acre National Monument in the south-eastern corner of our state. This could come as soon as this summer but may not happen until late fall. (Check out this article: Recent SLTrib article on looming visit by Sec Jewell) As you well know we are not in favor of any new national monuments that lack formal support from our legislature and Governor. Unfortunately a coalition of native American tribes have undoubtedly been misinformed and mislead by pseudo-environmental activists. Like native hunters wearing sheep skin to get close to their prey; nefarious individuals and radical organizations have used similar tactics to get into the tribes and lead them to ask for things that will harm native peoples. This coalition has petitioned for the monument and if and when it is handed to them they will be in for a rude awakening. It will be an oppressive burdensome weight. It will not protect the values in the land they love but it will make it almost impossible for them to continue traditional practices and have access to these sacred lands. It will also unnecessarily harm and punish non-native folks in the San Juan County area. This area is already WAY over burdened with public land designations and doesn't need any more. Despite our predictions we will work to avoid the designation in this and all other areas of our state. We will continue to support the efforts of good people that want to manage land in a way that is healthy for our environment and for the public. We fully support the effort to transfer public lands to the states. We know that isn't a silver bullet solution. We recognize the problems that will remain with state ownership and new ones that will be created. We also know that we can resolve things when decisions are made more locally. Local government usually makes better decisions (NOT ALWAYS). We ask you to renew your commitment to helping our organization fight for improved motorized access of public land. USA-ALL needs your help. In the coming months USA-ALL will hold a meeting to refocus and improve our future efforts. We have many exciting initiatives but we need additional volunteer help to execute our plans. Many of you will be invited to that meeting. We want your input and ideas. There is much more we can and should be doing but we need your help. We hope you will make time to be more involved. Lastly we want to thank SOOooo many of you for your generous donations that helped us travel to Washington DC last month. Our meetings were very productive and we couldn't have done it without all of you. We were overwhelmed at all the financial support we received. In fact It has given us a big boost and helps us keep fighting. If you were one of the very few who didn't donate to help us; here is your chance to join with your friends and neighbors and the vast majority of Utahns and fight for our opportunity to enjoy our public lands. We need to take our work to the next level and if you will donate even a small amount it will allow us to do just that. We HATE begging for money but unfortunately we have to have funds to continue our efforts. Please donate to help us be more involved in preventing monuments and advocating for your interests. Your donations are treated with reverence and respect and are always used as efficiently as possible. With your help we can win this!

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
