Serving Central and Northern New Mexico Including Albuquerque, Santa Fe

and surrounding communities

letterfrompublisherMay marked my first return to Florida since moving to New Mexico as I connected with my fellow publishers at the annual Natural Awakenings conference. Even though we all operate independently in our own markets, it was beautiful to experience the support and love of the “NA” family. One of the highlights was our morning with new thought leader Panache Desai. Oprah Winfrey calls him a “rising young star in spiritual thought”– the next Deepak or Wayne Dyer.

His message was simple: “Allowing ourselves to fully embrace our undesirable emotions permits them to wash through us, liberating our pure vibrational energy” and finding the blessings in disguise. You can connect with him on Facebook or Twitter. His philosophy ties in with Judith Fertig’s feature article, “Life Lift: Being Happy from the Inside Out.” Did you know that Natural Awakenings will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year? Launched by Sharon Bruckman in 1994 as a single edition in Naples, Florida, Natural Awakenings has now grown into the largest free, local, healthy lifestyle publication in the world, serving more than 3.8 million readers in 87 cities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Natural Awakenings’ 87 publishers across the country buy more eco-friendly newsprint than any other media except for newspapers. June 5 marks the celebration of Father’s Day. The father’s role has changed as more single parents and couples share the responsibility of raising children. I am filled with gratitude for my late husband who took amazing care of our precious son when I traveled for business. I am also reminded of my dad. I never realized the influence he had on me until much later in my life. He was a health fanatic and as a kid I was surrounded by yoga and holistic health books that influenced me to become a yoga teacher. Our meals consisted of much raw food ergo my love for salads and veggies. Please read the article “Forgiving Your Father” written by Max Highstein, local author and intuitive, in our Wise Words section. And last, I hope you purchased your tickets for the Albuquerque Film and Media Experience, transforming Albuquerque June 3-9. Celebrities such as Mr. and Mrs. Redford, Robert Lynch, panels of actors and directors bring to life the produc-er’s vision to create “Oneness through the Power of Films.” Interviews highlighting the films and their creators will be published in future editions. That leaves your June calendar open to receive a warm hug from humanitar-ian Amma on June 17and then decide between the Mega QI Activation 4-day event in Santa Fe starting June 22, or the Self-Care Revolution event in Santa Fe from June 20-23, or maybe both? With so much to choose from, I invite you to stay tuned for the July edition.

Body of Santa Fe Announces Fundraiser In Support of Anahata International

BODY of Santa Fe announces a benefit yoga class in support of Anahata International and their yoga

outreach efforts in the West Bank. The candle-lit class, Sunday Sadhana, will be held at BODY on July 14th from 5:30-7:30pm and taught by Shawn Parell, a BODY Yoga Instructor and Director of Programs at Anahata International, who will travel to the West Bank in June. Proceeds from Sunday’s Sadhana class on July 14th will support yoga outreach ef-forts in the West Bank. The suggested minimum donation is $14, or a 1-class pass. In the Summer of 2012, Shawn Parell traveled to the West Bank to provide the first comprehensive foundational yoga and meditation training to 16 Palestinian women living throughout the region. All 16 women received certification as yoga instructors, with an emphasis on trauma-sensitive yoga, pre-natal yoga, kids yoga, and meditation techniques, at no cost to them. The women, chosen for their lead-ership ability, spread the practice of yoga throughout their communities as a way of coping with and healing the trauma associated with living in the West Bank, a conflict-ridden area marked by decades of violence and instability. Since that training, Anahata International has continued its support by provid-ing ongoing mentorship and additional resources for the training graduates. Parell’s return trip, scheduled for June of 2013, will reunite the students of the original class to deepen their practice and reinforce their skills in teaching yoga.

Creating the Best Possible Life

The next Experience workshop is being held July 19-22 in Santa Fe,

facilitated by nationally celebrated life transformation coach, Honey Ward. “People can read all the books, do affirmations, the works, and ‘know it all.’ So why isn’t it working?” asks Ward. “Because people can’t think their way out of limiting beliefs and self-sabotage. And if doing all that’s already been done were going to make life better, it already would have.” It’s possible to expand conscious-ness to enjoy more success and fulfillment every single day. And that’s exactly what happens in The Experi-ence workshop. “No matter how great life is right now, it can be better,” affirms Ward. “And if it isn’t so great, here’s some-thing that can really help. Improved spiritual life, financial abundance, relationships, and business success—it’s all possible!” The Experience has supported over 30,000 people to live more pas-sionately and powerfully. In it, folks discover more about what makes them tick, drop any old baggage that’s holding them back, obtain tools and have experiences to expand con-sciousness and live more powerfully in every area of life. “Most importantly,” says Ward, “they become more loving of them-selves and others, which could just be what life is all about.” Ward explains, “There aren’t hundreds of people jumping up and down in a short-lived frenzy of en-thusiasm at The Experience. Instead, you can count on expanding your life for good in a group small enough to connect with one other and to receive personal support from me.” The Experience is committed to personal success and fulfillment and supports all people to live their very best life.

Take the Guesswork out of Weight Loss

Jenny Craig is all about eating well, moving more and living life. Jenny teaches portion control and a balanced approach to living. “As part of Jenny’s programs

you’ll eat our delicious cuisine each day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack,” says Jenny Craig consultant, Lynn Denny. Participants will also supplement their meals with their own fresh vegetables, fruits and dairy. Activity is a key component to weight loss success. “Jenny’s staged approach to physical activity is intended to get you to move more through daily activity, recre-ational activity and planned activity as part of your program,” explains Denny. Support is the part that many programs overlook, and one of the keys to success. Jenny’s one-on-one support is designed to strengthen self-monitoring, goal-setting, problem-solving and coping skills. According to Denny, once a week, participants visit their local center or schedule a phone consultation with Jenny Craig At Home. With a trained consultant, participants get personalized education that focuses on the three success factors for healthy weight management: food, body and mind.” “Jenny takes the guesswork out of weight loss,” says Denny. “We’ve helped over five million people find success with Jenny. Hugging Saint Visits Albuquerque

Reputed as a tireless humanitarian, Mata Amritanan-damayi, better known as “Amma” or “Ammachi,”

visits Albuquerque June 17-20 as part of an 11-city U.S. tour where she is expected to receive thousands with her blessing—a healing embrace. Two free public programs and a retreat will be offered at the Marriott Pyramid North. Programs include guided meditation, devotional singing, and a spiritual talk by Amma offering practi-cal solutions for personal fulfillment as well as the most pressing challenges fac-ing today’s world. Program attendees also have the opportunity to receive Amma’s darshan—a spiritual blessing in the form of a physical motherly embrace. Amma’s programs are run entirely by volunteers. Funds raised from retreats as well as from the sale of food, books and gifts directly support the humanitarian projects of Embracing the World, Amma’s global network of charitable activities. Embracing the World projects include orphanages, homes for the homeless, scholar-ships for poor children, hospitals, disaster relief and microfinance-powered initia-tives for women. Amma says that her life is dedicated to trying to awaken love and compassion within individuals all over the world. Amma feels these qualities are essential for world peace and harmony. “In today’s world, people experience two types of poverty: the poverty caused by lack of food, clothing and shelter, and the poverty caused by lack of love and compassion,” Amma says. “Of these two, the second type needs to be considered first because if we have love and compassion in our hearts, then we will whole-heartedly serve those who suffer from lack of food, clothing and shelter.” On June 17, the morning program begins at 10 a.m. and the evening session begins at 7:30 p.m. The final free public program begins at 7 p.m. on June 20. Ad-ditionally, an intimate retreat with Amma takes place June 18-20 at the Marriott. Numbered tokens for individual blessings are distributed one hour before programs begin. Tokens are limited by time constraints.

Location: Marriott Pyramid North, 5151 San Francisco Road NE, Albuquerque. For more details call Archana Lee at 512-694-4375. Pre-registration for the retreat is required. Visit Amma.org and click ‘tours’ for more information.

The Great WorkBe courageous and bold, do all you can to help.

The greatest virtue, and the great-est happiness, come from acting

in service to humanity. Contributing to the creation of enlightened plan-etary civilization is the high point of a spiritual path. Service is acting with the intention to reduce the causes of suffering. The greatest causes of suffering, and perhaps the only causes of suffering, are ignorance and intolerance. As you dispel these, in yourself and in those around you, the whole creeps toward enlightenment. Generations of secret societies have talked about doing the Great Work. But eventually, through overwhelm, selfish-ness, and profanation, many forgot the purpose of the Great Work. Simply the Great Work is improving the general welfare of all humanity by reducing the ignorance, the intolerance, and the cruelty in the world. See ad page 21.

Prayers for Now Book Release

The book Prayers for Now by Maria Yraceburu is several

things. “It is a collection of ancient rhythms and cadences that light up our imagination. It teaches rela-tionship with the Earth, and reveres Spirit,” explains Yraceburu. “It also uplifts us, reminds us how to pray, being in right relationship to All Our Relations, and how you can

and should grow as a spiritual being living in a human body.” This written from the perspective that we are all powerful co-creators of our reality, that words of power are inherent, and that Mother Earth’s influence is alive and powerful. Yra-ceburu believes that those who live a spiritually connected life on a daily basis have the ability to manifest what they pray for and can expect to have what they have prayed for. Thousands of people have testified to the blessings they have received from Yraceburu’s prayers since 1972. Prayers for Now is available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and other fine bookstores. For more information, visit yraceburu.org. See ad page 9.

Ancient Gypsy Healing with Lineage Keeper

Romani Gypsy healing has been around since before Budday. World-renowned

healer, Lynda Yraceburu, is a living prac-titioner of the Rom’s own healing tradi-tion, the inheritor of a deeply enriching and empowering craft which combines understanding the body’s language, the power of all elements combined, vision and magical elements of simplicity and love. According to Yraceburu, “Traditional Rom Vas Pesh perpetuates the healing ways of Earth.” “Is it time to honor yourself first and receive some overdue stress maintenance for mind, body and soul?” asks Yraceburu. “Do you want to get rid of those nagging aches and pains and have more mobility? Do you feel ‘out of sorts’ and want to find the dynamic real you? Do you want to feel rejuvenated, sleep better and have more energy?” Lynda Yraceburu was activated in these ancient tradi-tions by her lineage grandmother, the Grandmother of Herbs, Juliette de Bairclai-Levy, and has been a practicing Chovani for the last 20 years. Sunset Tour of Seton Castle

On June 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., The Academy

for the Love of Learning invites you to join Seton Legacy Curator David L. Witt for an introduction to the life and legacy of Ernest Thomp-son Seton and his connection to the work of the Academy for the Love of Learning. Attendees will learn about his life and accomplishments with special attention to his transformation from wildlife killer to wildlife protector. The evening will also include a reading of excerpts from Seton stories. The setting for this event is Seton Castle. Built in the 1930s, the structure was largely destroyed by a 2005 fire, and then restored to its current form as a space for outdoor activities. Built of native stone from a nearby quarry, the Castle features commanding views to the east, south and west. Serving as Seton’s final home, it is set at the terminus of one of the southern-most spurs of the Rocky Mountains. Seton, who was born in 1860, was a part of the vibrant Santa Fe art community until his death at the Castle in 1946. He may be best known as a founder of the wildlife conservation movement and as co-founder of both the worldwide Scouting movement and the Boy Scouts of America. Seton’s career included important accomplishments as an artist, writer, con-servationist, scientist and educator. He was the premier wildlife illustrator of his generation, a best-selling author of books for children and adults, and an early master of field biology, making important contributions to studies in orthithology, mammalogy, ecology and animal behavior. The Academy for the Love of Learning maintains and shows an important col-lection of Seton’s artwork supplemented by a book and archival collection about his life and legacy.

Cost: Free. In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Leonard Bern-stein Room at the Academy for the Love of Learning. See ad page 3.

New Support Groups from People Living Through Cancer

Two peer facilitator trainings yielded new support groups joining People Living Through Cancer’s

(PLTC) current support for cancer survivors and the people who love them. New cancer support groups in Albuquerque include a support group for women recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Collaborating with the Breast Cancer Resource Center, PLTC hosts an LGBTQI2S rainbow support group. Coming together with the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, PLTC of-fers one support group for teens with cancer and separate one for their parents. Working with the Gynecological Cancer Awareness Project (GCAP) PLTC hosts two groups, a monthly caregiver support group and gynecological cancer support group. These groups join PLTC’s established groups which focus on those with breast cancer, advanced cancers, blood cancers, groups for prostate cancer survivors and their partners as well as a bereavement group. Every Tuesday night in Albuquerque there is s support group for anyone who loves someone with cancer. Outside of Albuquerque, new support groups are being held in Clovis, Dem-ing, Angel Fire, and Taos; joining established groups in Belen, Carlsbad, Rio Ran-cho, Roswell and Santa Fe. People Living Through Cancer, a not for profit organization, connects and supports cancer survivors and caregivers by transforming shared individual experi-ences into enduring hope. PLTC began with five women in Albuquerque in 1983 and has expanded to a multi-person staff and a dedicated board of directors. PLTC, with the help of volunteers across New Mexico, offers support groups in Albuquer-que and nine other cities. For more information, visit pltc.org. Donations gratefully accepted.

Janis Grau

Working with watercolors is a long-term proposition for Janis Grau, who earned a degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and went on to teach art to middle-schoolers for 35 years. After living on Maryland’s East-ern Shore, this Baltimore native now creates art in her Fort Myers, Florida, home studio. Grau finds inspiration for her paintings in the natural settings of these two coastal areas. Her compositions stem from a desire to capture the fleetingness of na-ture in some permanent way. She notes, “I want observers to be drawn into the flower, imagine the scent and feel the texture of each petal and leaf, so that they may see something they’ve never before noticed.”

PSA Testing ControversyMen

face a new dilem-ma at their annual physical this year—should they be screened for prostate cancer? Last year, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against rou-tine screening for this form of cancer, regardless of age. Some doctors claim this will cause treatable prostate cancer cases to be missed. The level of prostate-specific an-tigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate gland, can be measured with a simple blood test. Until the USPSTF issued its recommendation, doctors routinely used the test to screen men 50 and older. The task force, however, concluded there is at least moder-ate certainty that the potential harms of PSA testing outweigh the benefits; many benign conditions, particularly prostate infections and enlargement, can elevate PSA readings higher than normal, prompting more aggressive testing. Before deciding on the test, it helps for men to explore this issue with their doctor. Some physicians take a “wait and see” approach and retest several times over a few months before making a recommendation; others suggest an immediate biopsy if PSA levels are high. While a blood test is a benign proce-dure, a prostate biopsy is not. A high PSA reading coupled with an overly aggressive doctor can cause anxiety and result in additional—and possibly un-needed—medical treatment. BREAKS FROM EMAIL BOOST FOCUS AND PERFORMANCEA “vacation” from email might be a simple prescription for

improving work performance, suggests a new study by the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and U.S. Army research-ers. “We found that when you remove email from workers’

lives, they multitask less and experience less stress,” says UCI Informatics Pro-fessor Gloria Mark, who co-authored the study. Participants reported feeling better able to do their jobs and stay on task, and they were happier to interact with others in person. Also, getting up and walking to someone else’s desk instead of emailing provided physical exercise.

Fruits and Veggies Can Help Us Kick ButtsThe first long-term study on the relationship

between fruit and vegetable consumption and smoking cessation offers good news: Eating more healthy produce can help smokers quit the habit and remain tobacco-free longer. Researchers from New York’s University of Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions surveyed 1,000 smokers ages 25 and over from around the country. In a 14-month follow-up, they were asked if they had abstained from tobacco use during the previous month. Those that consumed the most produce were three times more likely to have been tobacco-free for at least 30 days than those that ate the least amount of produce. Smokers with greater fruit and vegetable consumption also smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first one and scored lower on a common test of nicotine dependence. The findings, published online in the Nico-tine and Tobacco Research journal, remained consistent even when adjusted for age, gender, race, ethnicity, education and household income.

The Center For Inner Truth is mov-ing into their tenth year of exis-tence in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Considering themselves a school and sanctuary for sensitive souls, they offer spiritual techniques and training to awaken the spirit, to heal, and to cre-ate consciously in the physical world. These techniques and teachings are based upon ancient wisdom similar to mystery schools of old and presented in a practical format. Natural Awakenings recently caught up with founder and director, Juli Somers, who shared with us what makes the Center’s offerings and teach-ings unique and valuable.

NA: You offer an introductory talk called “Everyone is Psychic.” Is that true? I don’t think of myself as psychic.JS: Yes, you are! Everyone is. What differs is the extent that each of us consciously chooses to use it. Even one who claims to not believe in energy and spirit is being psychic all the time. Each of us can learn to read energy and heal with it. People drawn to take classes at the Center For Inner Truth know they are a spirit in a body and want to learn how to more consciously create their lives.

NA: I’ve studied meditation. What’s different about what you teach?JS: We teach people how to bring their awareness into the body whereas many other meditations teach you to leave the body. We learn to meditate from a state of neutrality and amusement which en-hances your ability to be in your body, present, and connected to the Source of All That Is. NA: Who takes classes? How will they help me in my life?JS: Students of all ages and from all walks of life come to our Center. The thing they have in common is they all seek their own answers and want

to learn tools to simplify their life so they can move ahead and fulfill their life purpose. Students learn to release energy that steers them from their path and keeps them from reaching their goals. Healers and body workers also benefit from the information they learn here. It helps them to incorporate posi-tive release methods and enables them to heal themselves as they work.

NA: What is a clairvoyant reading?JS: A clairvoyant reading communi-cates who you are as a spiritual being and what you came to do this lifetime. Clairvoyants communicate this infor-mation to you by translating symbols, colors and mental image pictures in the layers of your aura and by reading several of your past lives. Your spiritual growth and the life experiences you’ve chosen to create and learn from are

reflected in your aura. While it won’t tell you what to do with your life, a read-ing often validates what you’ve already accomplished and lets you see that you are the creator of your choices. A read-ing empowers you to move forward with your own certainty and knowingness. NA: What is spiritual healing?JS: A spiritual healing is a non-touch energetic healing. You may request a focus for your healing or just choose to have a balancing of the seven main chakras and a cleansing of the aura. It’s an energy tune-up similar to getting the oil changed in your car. You don’t have to feel anything is “wrong” to receive a healing. A healing can be received to maintain well-being, help with a life situation or an acute or chronic illness.

NA: I’ve done talk therapy for years and still feel I have blocks, can this work help me?JS: To go within and create peace is powerful. One can be fully present with themselves on a feeling level while ‘look-ing’ at the stuck energy from a neutral and compassionate place. This allows energy to move. We don’t have to live our stories. We can rewrite them and choose anew. We also offer Transforma-tional Breathwork sessions which offers a powerful method of releasing stress and emotional blocks from the body.

The Center For Inner Truth is located at 826 Camino de Monte Rey, A1 in Santa Fe, NM. Workshops, classes, psychic readings, healing clinics and meditation services are available. Becoming a father is one of the most defining benchmarks in a man’s life.

In their research, University of Cal-ifornia-Berkeley Psychology Professors Phil Cowan, Ph.D., and Carolyn Cowan, Ph.D., found that when asked how important each aspect of life felt over a two-year study period, childless men surveyed showed a significant increase in the “partner/lover” aspect. But young fathers squeezed that facet into a smaller life space to accommodate the signifi-cant increase in the “parent” element. Here are a few highlights from what relevant studies by Oregon State University, in Corvallis, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and Switzerland’s University of Zurich say about how fatherhood changes men. Confidence and PrideHaving a close relationship with our

child helps build mutual confidence and self-esteem. Turning a child’s tears into laughter and feeling proud when he does well confirms that we’re on our way to being a successful father. Albeit briefly, a child may even share our tastes in culture, entertainment and other areas before mapping his own in-dividuality, but some common attitudes and interests will remain.

Patience and HumorWhen something goes wrong, we can take it seriously and try to change things, or roll with it and laugh. Doing the latter can increase compassion for our own and others’ mistakes.

Flexible ThinkingEarly on, it may be nearly impossible to differentiate the needs of our child and partner from our own. In reality, needs are to varying degrees in opposition,

thus imposing frustrations and sorrows and forcing mutual adaptation, accord-ing to the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry think tank. Parents should consider various points of view and develop contingency plans.

Return to ChildhoodRearing kids presents the opportunity to reread favorite childhood books and disappear back into imaginative worlds.

CreativityA.A. Milne (author of the Winnie the Pooh books) and J.K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame) first wrote for their kids. We may also be inspired to play an in-strument or take up an art form learned as a child while encouraging our chil-dren in their music or art lessons.

Reordering PrioritiesRaising kids produces a heightened awareness of others’ perspectives, reports University of Delaware re-searcher Rob Palkovitz, Ph.D. Many guys admit that they were somewhat selfish and self-centered before having kids, because having people depend on you and putting their needs before yours doesn’t come naturally. (Palko-vitz notes that marriage alone doesn’t trigger this realization.)

Changing ValuesBecoming a father prompts a hard look at one’s fundamental beliefs and values. Our view of what seemed harmless when we were younger, like not caring about money or possessions and potentially harmful lifestyle choic-es, changes completely when there’s a family to support. We see the world differently. Our health and well-being are no longer just personal concerns; they’re integral to our family. Interestingly, more mature new fathers—having had more time to hone their philosophy of life—report less of a need for fresh soul-searching than younger fathers.

Craig Hamilton is a writer, radio host and work-

shop leader devoted to helping people evolve their consciousness for the greater good. The former managing edi-tor of What is Enlight-enment? magazine, Hamilton went on to found Integral Enlight-enment, an online education program for those on a con-temporary spiritual path. Since then, thousands of people have participated in his courses and workshops, and the vast majority have been women. Natu-ral Awakenings asked Hamilton for his insights on this trend.

What’s behind the gender imbalance in personal growth and enlightenment circles? Two years ago, I hosted a summit called The Way of the Evolutionary Man that included a discussion about why more men aren’t drawn to partici-pate in these kinds of things. One of the main points made was that, while many Americans have focused on cre-ating equality for women in the last 50 years, there hasn’t been a comparable men’s liberation movement. I know that some would say, “Why do we need that? Men are already the ones with the most power, freedom and privilege.” Yet it became clear during our discussion that men do not have freedom when it comes to choosing among valued social roles.

Reframing Personal PrioritiesCraig Hamilton Explores the Gender

Gap in Spiritual Growthby Kim Childs

For example, a woman can feel valued whether she pursues a professional career or something else that we might call a path of the heart, such as follow-ing artistic passions, working for a nonprofit or serving as a teacher. But if men do such things, they risk losing value among women. Traditionally, women have wanted

to be with men that are more economi-cally successful than they are. If a man decides he wants to be an artist or a spiritual practitioner or follow what we might label a higher calling, he’s stepping out of traditionally validated activities for men. So the reason that more men aren’t putting more time into their personal growth could be that they’re not being valued for that.

What might it take to shift this phenomenon? If women want men to join them on paths of personal and spiritual growth, they might need to start in analyzing the part of themselves that says, “I want a man who makes more money than me, is successful and able to be the family provider.” Many women want their men to be conscious, sensitive, reflective and capable of profound inti-macy, plus be a good provider. I’ve heard from some men that feel seriously pained about this. A few said that they always wanted to be, for example, a musician or a teacher, but

they couldn’t see themselves being suf-ficiently successful at it, or their family discouraged it.

Is pursuing personal growth at odds with being a breadwinner?I teach a spiritual path that anyone can pursue in the midst of their busy life. It involves turning everything into a spiri-tual practice. It means observing your own motivations and distortions and experiencing a different relationship to life that’s no longer rooted in patterns of the past and the ego. I believe this work appeals to men because, while there is a medita-tive and interior dimension to it, the bigger part is calling people to step up in life and remove the obstacles inside themselves that keep them from play-ing their biggest game. Spiritual life isn’t about getting beyond this world; it’s about the evolution of our world through conscious participation. That’s something men and women alike can become inspired by and put their energy behind.

How can men be most effec-tive in a changing world? In order to be truly effective, each person needs to do the necessary inner work. It’s not enough to focus on try-ing to do and accomplish and acquire without clarifying what’s getting in the way of your full self-expression and creative engagement. It’s easy to think about life in terms of our history, identity, desires and concerns, but that’s just a small part of who we are. At our deepest level, we are this unfolding evolutionary process that’s been going on for more than 13 billion years. Now we have the ability to participate in the greatest adventure of all, that of conscious evolution, growing into a future aligned with our highest ideals, visions and aspirations. While that is mobilizing generations of women, I am finding that it also speaks to the highest aspirations of men. Connect with Craig Hamilton at IntegralEnlightenment.com.

Interviewer Deanna Cook has owned several organic restaurants, is a holistic celebrity chef and has appeared on the Food Network. Jeff Primack is a qigong teacher that has studied with many qigong masters from all over the world and has taught over 40,000 people in live seminars.

Deanna Cook: So, let me begin by asking you what is “qi-gong” really all about?

Jeff Primack: Qigong is the art of harnessing “qi,” which directly affects the blood flow and is an exercise that makes your blood pulse. This pulsing occurs by moving qi using specific breathing techniques along with postures and slow, graceful movements. Qigong also encompasses using healing foods, herbs, acupressure and yogic stretches, all of which energize the body, increase vitality and accelerate metabo-lism. Qigong is circulation; the term “blood flow” is synony-mous with “moving qi”. Many studies confirm practicing qi-gong reduces drug withdraw in heroin addicts by 50 percent. Studies also reveal that qigong boosts the immune system and is beneficial for those fighting cancer. Dr. Oz was quoted by

Up Close ANd persoNAl iNterview

with Jeff Primack, Founder and Visionary of Supreme Science Qigong

saying that if you want to live to be 100 to do qigong. These techniques originated over 3000 years ago by mountain won-derers, people who were highly activated by qi. DC: Can you tell us how Qigong is different from yoga or other healing therapies like acupuncture?

JP: Good question. Qigong is different from yoga primar-ily because it requires slower, more gracious movements to harness our electromagnetic field. Compared to most systems of yoga, qigong has a much greater emphasis on precise breathing techniques. Qigong deals with smaller movements of the abdomen to circulate qi and more precise movements of the hands, rooting into the earth and opening up pathways of energy. Yoga works with energy, but to a lesser degree and although we practice and love yoga, qigong does what yoga cannot. We train many thousands of yoga teachers and they are always blown away by the tangibility of qi experienced at our seminar. In regards to acupuncture, Qigong doesn’t use needles for treatment. However, Qigong is self-healing and directly affects the source of disease, which is poor circulation to various organs and body areas. Acupuncture is excellent for eliminating many health issues, but the fact Qigong can be done by yourself, free of charge, makes it special.

DC: I was blown away after doing your “Breath Empower-ment” exercise. I was actually buzzing inside! Using scien-tific terms, can you tell me us what this buzzing is and what happened to my body?

JP: “The Buzz” is a reaction caused by increased levels of oxygen and negative ions that accelerates the vibration of mitochondria. Many describe the inner buzzing or vibra-tional feeling as a natural high. It activates the body’s natural endorphins and dopamine. This form of activation helps the blood cell structure become “rounder” and improves the health of blood cells.

DC: Jeff, I understand you have a book called Conquering any Disease. According to the many testimonies, food heal-ing has helped hundreds of your students. What lead you to the “food healing” science that you are so admired for?

JP: I was an asthmatic until my early 20’s; at that time I was looking for an alternative treatment. The first study I found showed that children in Italy that consumed 5 to 7 servings of kiwi a week had a 40 percent less incidence of wheezing compared to children who didn’t eat kiwi. I began strictly enforcing that all my students with asthma eat two kiwis every day in addition to consuming other foods and herbs. Behold it worked! I even had a few students say I gave them kiwi in their dreams. With these profound results including other phytochemical rich foods that boost lung functions, this became one of the protocols.

DC: What are the most important qigong and dietary com-ponents for people with extra busy lives?

Page 17: June 2013

June 2013natural awakenings 17

JP: Ahh, yet another request for the 10 minute qigong workout! When time is short I recommend cleansing your body with oxygen and energy first thing in the morning. I will share with you my daily practice. I wake up, brush my teeth and hair, drink some hot tea outside and do the 9-Breath Method five times. This method absorbs/retains large amounts of oxygen in the bloodstream. Gentle power breathing awakens the cellular vibration and stimulates me-tabolism. As I wake up slowly for 10 minutes each morning my senses become heightened and I watch the birds in my garden. This is a quick and powerful method that we spend hours thoroughly teaching at the Qi Activation conference. As far as food goes, look beyond fat, protein, carb, mineral, vitamin and enzyme and follow God’s trail of white crystals into the apple core. The infamous fruit that started it all! Someone said an “apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Yeah, I say, but only if you eat the crystalized core of phy-tochemicals, which activates bone marrow’s production of cytokines for immunity. Regardless of how busy your life is, I recommend: 1) Giving up all dairy products – Replace with delicious healing ice cream, raw key lime pie, etc.

2) A smoothie every morning – Add avocados, apples with core, organic strawberries, etc.

3) Having big bowel movements – Eat squash, sweet potatoes and one Good Belly probiotic drink every day.

4) Watermelon Fast Once a Month – Only watermelon all day to cleanse kidneys and urinary channels. Note: Watermelon is not recommended for diabetics, cancer patients or people with sugar sensitive diseases.

DC: In my 30 years being on an enlightened path, attending many retreats and seminars, I never saw a group of people be as open, vulnerable and empowered like I did at the Qi Acti-vation Conference. What really resonated with me was that it was both experiential (hands on) and educational. You seem very at ease with speaking in front of so many. Was public speaking something that came natural for you?

JP: The highest teachers of Qigong speak in shorter bursts of information. They are natural summarizers of complex teach-ings. Speech spoken at the core essence level can powerfully hold audience attention, because it’s free of fluff. Talking about a pharmacy inside your own brain and activating latent healing abilities happens to be very interesting. Every year I speak to thousands of people, so I get lots of practice and learn new ways to refine the way I deliver the information. Humor also plays a role in how I teach at these big events. In high school, I was a class clown and studied ways to make people laugh. At every seminar participants tell me I remind them of Adam Sandler, but I can’t see it. “Qigong Hu-

mor” is funny because we’re all so holistic and mental about the same issues and sometimes we feel alone. Humor unifies people and that helps raise the energy. DC: I’ve been doing your “Qigong Strength Training” every other day like you suggested and my belly is getting some definition, but the best part is that I feel so peaceful at the end. How do you explain to people what is special about qigong methods of fitness and muscular conditioning?

JP: Qigong strength training is 100 percent nurturing to qi instead of taxing like some traditional exercises. If you have old injuries you can practice qigong without any side effects. We use “Holding Qi” postures like Horse Stance to build the root chakra and leg strength of the body. When doing HyperThrows we use extreme fast followed by slow “Press-ing on Qi” movements, which works wonders for circulatory issues and building muscle. These yin and yang alternat-ing movements open arteries to expand blood flow beyond what traditional exercise is capable of. Qigong breathing and movements are merged into a mildly challenging fitness routine and this qi integration helps you to recover faster and go deeper than normal.

DC: People are excited that Sante Fe will experience the largest qigong gathering New Mexico has ever seen. Five hundred people highly focused into healing practices inside one beautiful ballroom sounds exciting. Jeff, how can you afford to produce all the high production elements and sell tickets to a 4-day conference like this for only $129?

JP: Because we want the secret of qigong healing to get out! Hundreds moving and breathing in sync is truly vivid and allows you to experience energy beyond what you could by yourself. Where two or more are gathered seeds of love are scattered. “Qi Activation” comes to Santa Fe Hilton Buffalo Resort, located at 20 Buffalo Thunder Trail in Santa Fe on June 22-25. Jeff Primack and 25 qigong teachers will teach four days of qigong for only $129! To reserve tickets or more informa-tion, call 800-298-8970 or visit QiActivation.com. See ad on back cover.

liFe liFtBeing Happy from the Inside Out

by Judith Fertig

“Happiness is the only true measure of personal success,” advises Geoffrey James, of

Hollis, New Hampshire, author of How to Say It: Business to Business Selling. His work confirms that the rollercoaster world of business does not always promote a sense of well-being. James believes, “The big enemy of happiness is worry, which comes from focusing on events that are outside your con-trol.” For him, something as simple as a good night’s sleep contributes to personal happiness. Each of us has certain things that help make us feel positive, and they of-ten come in small moments, advises Ed Diener, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of Illinois and author of Happiness: Unlocking the Mysteries of Psychological Wealth. Based on 25 years of research into the subject, he’s a recognized expert in what he calls “subjective well-being.” In a recent six-part BBC series on happiness, Diener told viewers, “It may sound silly, but we ask people, ‘How happy are you, on a scale of one to

10?’ The interesting thing is that it pro-duces real answers that are valid—not perfect, but valid—and they predict all sorts of real things in their lives.”

Getting to HappyThe moment-to-moment path to hap-piness follows a trail blazed by para-dox. A recent University of Missouri College of Business study by Marsha Richins, Ph.D., suggests that happi-ness is in the wanting, not the getting. As noted Positive Psychologist Martin Seligman, Ph.D., remarks, “Focusing solely on happiness as a foundation of a good life,” won’t get you there. Gretchen Rubin, the New York City-based author of The Happiness Project and Happier at Home, further finds that, “Happiness doesn’t always make you feel happy.” Trying each day to be emotionally centered, affable, kind, conscientious, generous, patient, principled, accomplished, spiritual and true to yourself—the kind of person that should be happy and that makes other people happy—can be tough. Widespread economic and associ-

ated financial challenges have made many question whether money can buy happiness, a common core assumption of the “happiness starts on the outside” approach. Apparently, money can sometimes buy feelings of well-being, but only to a certain degree, according to researchers Angus Deaton and Dan-iel Kahneman, at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs. In 2010, they surveyed 450,000 randomly chosen residents across the country via daily questionnaires. The study revealed that, “Low income exac-erbates the emotional pain associated with such misfortunes as divorce, ill health and being alone.” Yet they also discovered that, “High income buys life satisfaction, but not happiness,” and there is no further progress in happiness beyond an annual income of $75,000 (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). On the other side of the world, in the tiny Himalayan country of Bhutan, where 70 percent of its 717,000 citizens are subsistence farmers and an annual income of $75,000 would be considered a fortune, people say they are generally happy, partly due to the nation’s “hap-piness starts on the inside” philosophy. Since 1971, Bhutan has been operating based on a gross domestic happiness (GDH) value system. Bhutanese Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley explains that the country has focused on growing both materially and spiritually, and citizen well-being has taken precedence over economic growth. For decades, this was deemed an oddity by many in the West, although now it appears prescient. “It’s easy to mine the land and fish the seas and get rich,” says Thakur Singh Powdyel, Bhutan’s minister of education. “Yet we believe you cannot have a prosperous nation in the long run that does not con-serve its natural environment or take care of the well-being of its people, which is being borne out by what is happening to the outside world.” The country measures its success in maintaining GDH by con-ducting regular surveys of the popula-tion. The reigning official definition of happiness involves peace, contentment and living in harmony with all creation. Seligman, author of Flourish: A Visionary New Understanding of Happi-

An age-old question rides a new wave of bestseller lists, university research and governmental soul-searching. The answers to “What are the secrets of a happy life?” might surprise us.

Page 19: June 2013

ness and Well-Being, has become a be-liever in GDH. “How can you measure well-being in a person, a family, a coun-try or globally?” he queries. Research by Seligman and his colleagues at the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, points to four basic elements: positive emotion, relationships, meaning in life and accomplishment, or PERMA. Seligman says there are proven ways to improve each element. For posi-tive emotion, writing down three “bless-ings”, or things that went well that day, can increase our feelings of gratitude and well-being. For relationships, active-ly listening and being present for a loved one and having that attention returned can strengthen those bonds. Increasing meaning in our lives, says Seligman, can be a challenge for Westerners. “We have threadbare spiritual and relation-ship furniture. We have too much ‘I’ and not enough ‘we,’” he says. But getting involved in something that increases the “we” factor will help make us happier.

Nurturing Signature StrengthsSelf-surveys at AuthenticHappiness.com can help us identify our strengths and realize what we’re especially good at—and we increase our feelings of accomplishment by doing more of them. “You can even figure out how to do the task you like least by using your signature strength,” Seligman advises. He shares an example of a grocery store cashier that disliked bagging

groceries, but was exceptional at social interaction. She made herself happier by chatting with her customers while she packed their selections. Lara Blair, a portrait photographer in Camas, Washington, believes in cel-ebrating strengths. “If making things is what you love, give it the space in your brain, home and life that it deserves.” Blair’s seminars and retreats help people tap ways to increase feelings of creativity, accomplishment and mean-ing. “If you nurture it and believe that growing this beautiful thing is worth the effort, the rewards will be more than you ever dreamed,” she says. When, as a happily married lawyer with children, Rubin thought her life was missing something vital, she used her love for reading and writing to explore that wistful, “What if?” She started researching subjective happiness via Marcus Aurelius, Samuel Johnson, Benjamin Franklin and St. Thérèse de Lisieux, whom Rubin refers to as her “spiritual master.” She decided to test-drive her findings at Happiness-Project.com and began blogging about new ways of thinking and behaving that were bringing her and her readers greater self-realization and contentment. “A great place to start is with your own body,” she counsels. “Are you getting enough sleep? Are you getting good food to eat? When you take care of those very basic things, you feel en-ergized, and then you can start moving to address other issues.”

Sustaining HappinessOnce we’ve upped our happiness quotient, it can still be difficult to stay at that level, says Kennon Sheldon, pro-fessor of psychological sciences at the University of Missouri, in Columbia. In a recent study conducted with research-ers at the University of California-River-side, Sheldon and his colleagues found that by both recognizing that the desire for “more” and “better” in our lives won’t stop and also appreciating what we have, we’ll stay happy. It’s equally vital to continually keep things fresh, with positive new experiences at home, work, play and exercise, as well as in relationships. In other words, sustained happiness takes a little work. “Just before going to bed,” suggests James, “write down at least one won-derful thing that happened that day. It may be anything from making a child laugh to a big sale. Whatever it is, be grateful for the present day, because it will never come again.” The benefits of individual well-being radiate to those around us, notes Seligman. “When individuals are flourishing, they are more produc-tive at work, physically healthier and at peace.” He believes that as we find ways to increase positive emotion, relationships, meaning in life and indi-vidual accomplishment, it’s possible for life on Earth to flourish.

Was your father perfect? Chances are, your relation-ship with your father has

been a mixed bag, because most par-ents try their best, but have faults inher-ited from their parents. So, we tend to receive some combination of love and anger, patience and impatience, caring and neglect. Your father, or whomever was the central male figure in your childhood, became a model to you. For better or worse he shaped your opinion of men, and showed you what to expect from them. The negative side of those expec-tations can be a problem, because they tend to set us up for failure and disap-pointment. Here’s how that happens. If your father was unavailable, distant, or angry toward you, for ex-ample, and you still hold fear, anger, or sadness about that, you’re apt to attract relationships with men who have nega-tive traits similar to your father. That’s what our unresolved feelings do—they unconsciously cause us to do things, and attract situations, that trigger those feelings and bring them to the surface,

so we can resolve them. So, you’ll continue to choose relationships with men who bring up that fear, anger, or sadness—whether for you that means a friend, boss, or husband. You may have noticed that I said “when you still hold” fear, anger or sadness. I put it as if you have some choice in the way you feel, because as an adult, you do. With some effort, you can begin to get in touch with those feelings and let them go. And that would be a very wise thing to do, because by releasing stored negativity, you give yourself a lot more freedom, and open to a whole range of new pos-sibilities in life. Plus, it just feels better not to carry that stuff around! We don’t have to continue to carry negativity toward our parents. And we can never fully come into our own without first letting go of those feelings, and at least becoming neutral about the people who brought us into the world. It’s important to keep the positive mem-ories, but release the negative expecta-tions that might otherwise darken your relationships with men going forward.

A much better approach is to deal directly with the way we feel about our parents, and clear up those issues at the source. And by the source, I don’t mean our parents, because it’s the feel-ings within us we need to change, not them. Forgiveness is all about healing the forgiver. It doesn’t matter whether our parents are still alive. By letting go of negativity toward them, we can move on and finally live our own lives. As with all personal growth, it’s an inside job. Unfortunately, the process of examining and letting go of negative stuff within us tends to be something we avoid. It can be daunting and scary; so instead of facing it we get distracted with work, zone out with drugs, TV, or other things, or just pretend those feel-ings aren’t there. But at some point the baggage gets too heavy to carry, and we can’t seem to move forward. Often that manifests as trouble that seems to keep coming up again and again, inner limitations we can’t seem to bypass, or a series of bad relationships. When we have that funny feeling that “life is trying to tell us something,” it is. It’s usually saying, “Look inside, and start cleaning up what’s bothering you deep down. Then you can move forward.” I’m sure there are people whose fathers were perfect in every way—though I’ve never met one. To some extent, we all carry vestiges of past hurts, neglect, or abuse, whether it was subtle or not so subtle. When you’re finally ready to do the deep inner work of letting go, it really pays to have help. Look for a counselor, therapist, teacher, or guide who has personally walked a similar path to the one in front of you, and has come out the other side. Find someone you feel comfortable with, and put your trust in them for as long as it takes to break through. On some level, in his heart of hearts, that’s what your father would want you to do.

While the rest of the country is aflutter in a puppy love rela-tionship with sustainability

and meaningfulness, we’re lucky to live in a state that’s deeply connected to the earth and soulfulness in very real ways.Interspersed among billboards, our high-ways boast strange geological features which lurk around every corner inspiring a sense of whimsy and wonderment. The question becomes: how do I shed unnecessary layers so I can fully immerse in this land that is so deeply aware of its identity and then adopt its unbounded free spirit?1. Learn about the landThis part of the world wears its history loud and proud. It knows its past and isn’t afraid to showcase it. Learn about the rich history in the mountains that dot your horizon. There are great educational opportunities at the Valles Caldera, a vast 13.7-mile grassy volcanic crater in the Jemez Mountains where elk and even Johnny Depp roam. Their van tours cover every-thing from geology and ecology to wild-life and moviemaking in the caldera. Get a guide book. The Sierra Club’s Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area is an unbeatable resource. Considered one of Santa Fe’s most popular books, you’ll enjoy its meticulously detailed and researched descriptions of trails and the surrounding flora and fauna. (Note: many of these hikes are accessible in other areas of New Mexico, not just Santa Fe.)2. Be dependent on the landNo man is an island. When you grocery shop, your money makes a difference.Ancient cultures (maybe as recently as your grandparents!) lived on what their communities produced. There’s some-thing deeply satisfying about snacking on dried apples from a family orchard up the road, sipping on wine made from grapes that felt the same summer rains as you and filling your salads with the mystifying greens from a nearby community. Local markets are just as

much about strengthening our connect-edness as they are about strengthening our economy and health.Pro tip: Don’t break the bank when you shop at the market. Pick one or two items you’ve never tried before and talk with the farmer about how their family prepares it. It’s pretty amazing what New Mexico can create.3. Invest in communities that healFinally, find safe places that inspire you to shed unnecessary burdens and to be wholly healthy and giving. Focus inward. The community at BODY of Santa Fe is truly one-of-a-kind, because it offers deeply healing massages and facials, food that nur-tures, and classes that strengthen and tone the body and mind. The students and clients share common values and many develop lasting relationships through their shared experiences.

BODY’s soon to be launched member-ships further foster a conscious lifestyle. Focus outward. Donate your time and energy to dynamic local nonprofits that mean something to you. Donate your hammer swinging skills to Habi-tat for Humanity or your furry animal love to a local animal shelter. What better way to invest in the future, than to coach a basketball team with Big Brothers Big Sisters or to mentor the kids in your neighborhood? Looking for a place to donate your time? Check out VolunteerMatch.org to begin browsing! Love your desert community and invest it its identity. You’ll be richly rewarded with a sense of meaningful belonging to this unique culture.

Stefanie Zehnder moved to Santa Fe last summer and was completely wooed by Kasha-Katuwe Tent

Rocks, Pat Montoya’s apple cider from Velarde and everything in between. She is currently working as the market-ing coordinator at BODY of Santa Fe and believes strongly in her new community. See ad page 3.

This month marks the first annual Albuquerque Film & Media Experience (AFME). Festival Coordinator, Lainie Sevante Quirk, took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to share some thoughts on the event. NA: The Albuquerque Film & Media Ex-perience is finally here. Has the original vision of the Festival changed from when it was conceived a year and a half ago?LSQ: It’s been a really quick year and a half. There’s been so much planning involved in AFME. We knew we were creating an event that was going to involve many people coming together in all facets of life – The mayor and city/county governments, the local busi-nesses and neighborhood communities, the media and New Mexicans who live throughout the state. We really felt and

LSQ: We’ve learned how important co-creation and collaboration is. Creating a large scale event that has the potential to shift the entire paradigm as we know it is something that takes a dedicated involvement and participation from just about everyone—sponsors, local businesses, city council, the county, the city, the state, and many neighborhood association and the media. It requires a multitude of volunteers who are dedi-cated to the success of the event.

NA: So, now that the first Festival is underway, what’s next for AFME? LSQ: Well, that’s probably why we’re so tired. As we launch 2013, we’re also gearing up for 2014 and 2015. Our intention each year is to feature a spotlighted country. As we highlighted The U.K. and Israel this year, next year we are featuring the countries of Asia, such as India and Nepal. We’ll see a lot of influence in Bollywood Culture, films representing Tibet and other areas of Asia. As it turns out, we did have a few very strong films this year from this region, such as Road to Peace featuring HH Dalai Lama and Pad Yatra, which focuses on a group of women who trek hundreds of miles through the Himala-yas picking up trash. In 2015, we plan to honor the countries of South and Central America along with Mexico. We plan to reflect as many Span-ish speaking countries as possible. It should make for some very interesting storytelling on the big screen.

NA: Anything else you’d like to share with the Natural Awakening’s audience?LSQ: Yes. We’d love to share your story. Come tell it, share it, and learn about others at AFME, June 3-9. Whether you are curious to know what it takes to make a film, are an avid moviegoer and want to hop from one movie to another, or are interested in the live events such as Taste of Film (where we’ll feature sev-en courses of gourmet themed food to pair with seven movies from our lineup), there’s plenty to come and experience. We’ll look forward to having people here from all parts of New Mexico. Listings of films and schedules, along with tickets and passes for all events, can be found at ABQFilmExperience.com.

still feel our concept has the strength to make a significant impact to the city of Albuquerque, to the film industry and to all those who want to see Albuquerque put on the map from a national and In-ternational perspective as a leading city for the burgeoning film industry. Our original vision of creating oneness through the power of film and the arts hasn’t changed. If anything, the planning has anchored the platform even stronger with the unfoldment of the films being screened, the actors and filmmakers showing up to be on panels and intimate conversations, and the generous time and energy of celebrities such as Mr. and Mrs. Redford and Robert Lynch.

NA: What have you learned most about the process of creating a city-wide community event?

With most exercise programs, while his person works out, a dog stays home alone, count-

ing squirrels outside the window and wishing Animal Planet wasn’t a rerun. How about bringing some of that exer-cise home so the pet gets fit, too? John E. Mayer, Ph.D., a Chicago clinical psychologist and author of Family Fit, maintains that, “Fitness works best as a group event, including the family dog. They love to partici-pate in many things, so be creative. Try swimming, touch football, jumping rope, rollerblading, tag or hide-and-seek.” Diane Tegethoff Meadows and Susan Riches, Ph.D., each accepted a challenge to exercise with their dogs 30 minutes a day for 30 days. “I walk my three Scotties every morning any-way, so adding minutes was easy,” says Meadows, a retired senior paralegal in Bulverde, Texas. “One of them is in charge of choosing the route, and we seldom go the same way two days in a row.” Riches, a retired Fort Lewis College professor and archaeologist, in Durango,

DOG SPORTSPeople & Pets Play Well Together

by Sandra Murphy

Colorado, doesn’t let inclement weather interfere. “Inside, we play fetch up and down the stairs,” she says. “I hide treats for tracking games of ‘find it.’” The dogs also like to jump through hoops. “The Scottie and Westie go at it for 30 min-utes; the Maltese stops after 15.” Jeff Lutton, a Dogtopia dog day-care/boarding franchisee in Alexandria, Virginia, conducts a popular running club. “On Sunday mornings we have about 15 people that run with their dogs. My golden retriever used to run six miles, but since she’s 9 now, we’ve cut back to three.” “Treibball [TRY-ball] is herding without sheep, soccer without feet,” ex-plains Dianna L. Stearns, president of the American Treibball Association, based in Northglenn, Colorado. “All you need is Pilates balls, a target stick for point-ing, a signal clicker and treats. It’s a fun, problem-solving game for all involved.” The idea is for the dog to direct rub-ber balls into a goal with its nose, shoul-der and/or paws—eventually, as many as eight balls in 10 minutes. Treibball can be played in group classes or competitions

naturalpet

or at home using a kiddie soccer goal. Another exercise option is to turn the backyard into an obstacle course for the dog, kids and adults. Use a clicker to signal the next move. Four or five hula hoops spaced a bit apart provide a pattern for a sit/stay game as the dog moves into each one on command. A thin wooden dowel across two boxes and anchored to a stick-on photo hook on either end provides a hurdle. A child’s oversized plastic golf club hits a tennis or plastic ball just far enough for the dog to retrieve. For a doggie triathlon, add more elements, such as yard races between dogs and children on their tricycles or scooters down a straight path, with everyone cooling off in a hard-plastic swimming pool as part of the event. For dogs that are older or have mo-bility issues, some stretching before or even after exercise is suggested. “Doga [dog yoga] has become a daily ritual with my 11-year-old golden retriever since the onset of arthritis in her hips and back. Besides keeping her joints limber, it’s good one-on-one time for us,” says latchkey dog expert Eileen Proctor, in Castle Rock, Colorado. “Whenever she wants to stretch, she will come up and gently paw me,” relates Proctor. “Her favorite is the up-ward dog pose. Before practicing doga, this dear one had trouble getting to her feet, and then was lame for a minute. Now she is able to get up and move about immediately.” When exercising with pets, always keep plenty of water handy, start slow and watch out for how the weather or workout affects the participants. Scien-tists have changed from saying it takes 21 days to form a new habit to admitting it may take up to three times that long. That might be true for people, but try explain-ing it to the dog standing at the back door on day two—he’s ready to do it again.

In outdoor spaces from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to Arch Cape, Or-egon, produce is growing and grill

embers are glowing. Growing a garden and grilling its bounty have never been more popular. For the first time since 1944, when 20 million “Victory” gardeners pro-duced 44 percent of the fresh vegeta-bles in the United States, food garden-ing is outdistancing flower gardening. In its latest survey of garden retailers, the National Gardening Association found that consumers’ spending for growing their own food hit $2.7 billion, versus $2.1 billion for flowers. Barbecuing grill chefs are expand-ing their repertoire beyond grass-fed burgers and steaks. More vegetables and fruit are being grilled now than in the past, according to the latest annual sur-vey by leading grill manufacturer Weber. This all makes sense to Karen Adler and Judith Fertig, co-authors of The Gar-dener & the Grill. They’ve observed that when the bounty of the garden meets the sizzle of the grill, delicious things hap-pen. “Natural sugars in vegetables and

fruits caramelize,” says Adler. “Essential oils in fresh herbs become more aro-matic. The colors of fruits and vegetables stay more vivid when grilled, rather than when cooked any other way.” “Grilling gives even familiar foods an exciting new makeover,” notes Fertig. For example, by cutting a head of cabbage into quarters, brushing each cut side with olive oil and then grilling and chopping, the backyard chef infus-es a grill flavor into a favorite coleslaw. Flatbreads, patted out from prepared whole-grain or gluten-free pizza dough, can be brushed with olive oil, grilled on both sides and then topped with flavor-ful garden goodies. Simple fruits like peaches and plums—simply sliced in half, pitted and grilled—yield fresh taste sensations, especially cradling a scoop of frozen yogurt. A quick foray to the garden or farmers’ market can provide just the right colorful, flavorful edge to any summer barbecue.

Kale, Potato and Chorizo PizzaHearty but not heavy, this pizza takes kale (or alternatively, Swiss chard or collard greens) and onions from the garden, and then adds vegetarian chorizo to accent.

Yields 4 servings

1 pound fresh whole grain or gluten-free pizza dough¼ cup whole grain or gluten-free flour for sprinkling4 new potatoes, cooked and thinly sliced8 kale leavesOlive oil, for brushing and drizzlingGrapeseed oil for brushing the grill rack8 oz cooked and crumbled vegetarian chorizo (Portuguese or other spicy sausage optional)½ cup chopped green onion (white and light green parts)Coarse freshly ground black pepper

Prepare a hot fire on one side of the grill for indirect cooking. Oil a perforated grill rack with grapeseed oil and place over direct heat.

Divide the dough into four equal parts. Sprinkle with whole grain or gluten-free flour and press or roll each piece into an 8-inch circle. Sprinkle flour of choice on two large baking sheets and place two rounds of dough on each sheet. Brush the potatoes with olive oil, place on the perforated grill rack and grill for 15 minutes, turning often, or until tender before topping the pizza.

Brush the kale with olive oil. Grill leaves for 1 minute on each side or until slightly charred and softened. Quickly trim off the bottom of the stalk and strip the leaves from the stems. Finely chop the leaves and set aside.

Brush one side of each pizza with olive oil and place, oiled side down, on the direct heat side of the grill grate. Grill for 1 to 2 minutes or until the dough starts to bubble. Brush the top side with olive oil and flip each pizza round, using tongs, onto a bak-ing sheet.

Quickly brush pizza rounds with additional olive oil, and then spoon on one-fourth of the sliced potato and grilled kale.

Sprinkle toppings of sausage and green on-ion. Drizzle a bit more overall olive oil and season with pepper.

Using a grill spatula, place each pizza on the indirect side of the fire. Cover and grill for 4 to 5 minutes or until the kale has slightly wilted and the topping is hot. Serve hot.

June 2013natural awakenings 27

In May, the flurry of Gemini energy that brought opportunities for growth

through new communication and the sharing of information continues as you move into June. Dream big! Is there a class you’ve been meaning to take? A new skill you want to learn? A new career position intrigues you? Talk, listen, write, plan and take action. With so many new and exciting details and developments coming your way, remember to focus, and gather the pieces to create the whole picture of new experience you long to achieve. By mid-month the energy will begin to slow down and soften as Venus the Goddess of Love and Mercury, the planet of communication come together in the sensitive sign of Cancer, June 19 to June 22. This sets the stage for a few days of inward reflection and tender conversation, where innermost needs and desires can be shared or fear and moodiness can shut down your heart. What will you choose?

On June 6, Neptune, the planet of higher consciousness, stations retro-grade in the sign of Pisces until the middle of November 2013. More than ever, during this time consciously engage with Neptune. Without con-scious engagement, you might feel a bit foggy, confused, or lack life direction. Pay attention to your dreams and day dreams; write them down. Create sacred space and time where you can turn your focus inward with quiet meditation or prayers. Open to receive. With gratitude and oneness allow the messages of your higher self to come into your awareness.

On June 7, tensions ease a bit as Uranus, the planet of freedom and

individuation, and Pluto, the planet of transformation, begin to move further apart in the cosmos. The continuing cosmic square-off between these two heavyweight planets, play a big part of the compelling times we are all living in. Individually, you are being asked to examine areas of your life where old structures are outgrown and failing. What needs to be released (inwardly or outwardly) to create space and allow connection with what is truly meaningful to you? What are your natural gifts? What do you feel pas-sionately about? What do you feel is your life purpose? These are big ques-tions for you to think about. The higher purpose of these hard questions is to empower you to claim your true des-tiny, with authenticity and courage.

June 8 brings the New Moon in Gemini surrounded by the Sun, Mars and Jupi-ter also in Gemini. The New Moon is a good time to begin something, to start new, and with all this Gemini mental energy, communicate! Explore new and diverse ideas, share information with others, talk, listen and see what comes up. With Jupiter and Mars on either side of the Moon, look for windows of opportunity and if it feels like the right thing, take action and get started! On June 23, the Full Moon in Capricorn is a good time to use discipline and com-mitment to complete what you set forth on the New Moon.
