DRUIDS RFC NEWSLETTER JUNE 2013 Issue #4 Druids RFC Newsletter June 2013 STRONG. TOUGH. PROUD. Strong, Tough, and Proud As the season kicked off in May we showed that these words represent us as a club on the field. The club as a whole only suffered two narrow losses all month with several wins to be proud of. The defending provincial champions, second division women or green machines as they are fondly referred to went undefeated all month congratulations girls! The first division men also went undefeated and beat the alwaysstrong St.Albert men in a tough game that they can definitely be proud of. The first division women came out strong beating Lethbridge and the clan, but came up short against the Lep Tigers. The second division men beat up the Clan and narrowly lost to the St. Albert second division team. It is certainly early in the season so nothing is written in stone but we did come out with a bang! Congratulations to all teams keep up the hard work. Our first division front row preparing for a scrum. Culture Shift Fundraising and volunteerism is a major theme for the board of Governors this year as the financial future of our organization is uncertain and we need your efforts not only on but off the pitch to help the club secure its future as a premier club not only in Alberta but Canada. If you have your own fundraising ideas or proposals please don't hesitate to contact me or any of the Board of governors. We need our membership to not only turn up to train and play games but to help out with things around the club. Help with the grounds or clubhouse as well as social events. Over the next few weeks you will see sign up charts around the club for helping out with work that needs done. It can't just be the STP (same ten people) carrying the weight for the rest of us. A slogan that was identified through a recent governance workshop for our club was 'Strong, Tough, Proud' we see this week in week out on the field we now need to see it off the field. Yours in Druid Rugby Oey Curran Chair Board of Governors We need you! Our Club, Our Family, YOUR Initiative. Below is the start of a list of some things we could use your help with around the club! Bar at peak times: 1. Halftime 2. After Game A sign up for bar duty on the white board with positions for 2 people to help out with the half time and after game rush (all game days). If you are down watching games please sign up to take the pressure off. Blue garbage Bins – on Thursdays after practice we need volunteers to lift the garbage bins and empty them into the large bin to the west of the club house and put the bins back out to their positions beside the fields. This keeps the garbage from blowing around and ready for the weekend. Last out of the Changing room Make sure showers are turned off and lights. Please keep these dressing rooms tidy treat them like your home. Thank you one and all for helping our organization run smoothly. Try time for Larissa Brown!

Rugby Fest 2013 Rugby  Fest  came  and  went  once  again,  and  it  is  safe  to  say  that  the  most  successful  part  of  the  tournament  was  OTS.  Our  club  was  well  represented  entering  3  teams:  a  Women’s  social  team,  a  Men’s  social  team,  and  a  Men’s  elite  team.  The  Women’s  social  team  proved  to  be  quite  successful,  using  their  leapfrog  lineouts,  fast  young  Druids  and  a  whole  lot  of  drunken  determination  to  work  their  way  to  winning  the  bowl!  The  Men’s  social  team  was  a  riot  to  watch,  and  won  a  few  games  along  the  way.  The  Men’s  elite  team  had  a  very  tough  draw,  loosing  a  close  game  to  the  Hornets  to  start  the  tournament  off.  Despite  some  unfortunate  injuries,  the  men  made  it  to  the  quarter  final,  and  lost  a  heartbreaking  game  to  #selfish.  Also,  an  honorable  mention  should  go  out  to  the  Druids  Senior  Women  that  played  for  The  Janes.  Some  of  the  Druids  girls  teamed  up  with  some  LT’s  to  make  an  awesome  competitive  team,  which  ended  up  winning  the  whole  tournament,  way  to  go  girls!  After  all  of  the  seriousness  of  the  tournament  was  over,  the  Druids  took  it  upon  ourselves  to  enjoy  a  whole  lot  of  beer,  and  party  ourselves  silly  at  OTS.  Between  John  losing  his  shoes  and  coming  to  Billiards  in  stolen  (or  borrowed)  cleats,  a  few  people  disappearing  into  the  bushes,  and  way  too  many  of  us  having  golf  balls  dropped  into  our  mugs,  it  is  safe  to  say  that  we  all  need  a  whole  year  to  prepare  ourselves  for  Rugbyfest  2014.

Men’s Player of the Month Stephen  Duffy

Our  men’s  player  of  the  month  is  fairly  new  to  the  club  coming  over  from  Ireland  just  last  year  with  his  beautiful  girlfriend  lindsay  who  we  ended  up  liking  quite  a  bit  more  than  him  but  anyways  it  turns  out  he’s  a  pretty  damn  good  rugby  player  lets  get  to  know  him  shall  we?

Women’s Player of the Month Maddy  Laibida

Our  women’s  player  of  the  month  just  came  up  from  our  junior  program  to  our  senior  womens  program  and  we  could  not  be  happier  to  have  her.  She  is  everywhere  on  the  field  making  tons  of  tackles  and  rucking  her  heart  out.  Here  she  is  Maddy  Laibida…

How  long  have  you  played  for  the  Druids?  This  would  be  my  third  year

How  long  have  you  played  rugby?  I  have  been  playing  rugby  for  3  years

What  made  you  want  to  start  playing  rugby?  I  had  just  quit  soccer  that  year  and  some  of  my  friends  that  played  for  McNally  High  school  rugby  suggested  I  join  the  team.  My  parents  also  thought  it  was  a  great  idea  as  my  Dad  played  when  he  was  younger.

What  is  your  favorite  thing  about  being  a  druid?  My  favorite  thing  about  being  a  Druid  would  be  that  it’s  a  club  that  feels  like  family.

What  is  your  favorite  druid  memory?  I  can’t  pick  only  one,  it’s  like  picking  your  favorite  child.

What  position  do  you  play?  Flank

Any  other  position  you  wish  you  played?  Nope,  I  am  open  to  all  positions  but  I  love  playing  Flank.

Red  or  Green?  Why?  Both  colors  are  sick,  especially  when  you  put  them  together!  But  I  would  have  to  say  Red

What  are  you  most  excited  about  this  upcoming  season?  Meeting  my  new  team  members.  This  is  my  first  season  playing  Women's.  And  of  course  winning  games.

Whats  an  interesting  fact  about  yourself?  Whenever  I  have  French  Fries  and  a  Blizzard  from  Dairy  Queen,  I  dip  my  fries  into  my  ice  cream.

Nicknames?  My  real  name  is  Madison  Laibida  but  everyone  calls  me  Maddy,  Maddog,  Laibidabuddy,  Labidabidah.  The  list  goes  on.

Junior Players of the Month U7  and  U9  Mini’s

This  month  I  had  the  pleasure  of  attending  a  U7  and  U9  practice  at  the  druids  and  interviewing  them  as  a  team  afterwards.  They  are  being  coached  by  Allison  Lamoureux,  also  known  as  Pun  who  has  been  coaching  minis  for  3  years  now,  and  Robyn  Lofstrand.  Here  are  some  of  the  answers  I  got  from  the  7  who  were  at  practice:  Kyta,  Sadie,  Marcella,  Will,  Sebastian,  Loic,  and  Zea.

How  long  have  you  played  rugby  and  why  did  you  start?

Will:  this  is  my  first  year  and  I  started  because  its  fun  to  watch  on  TV.

Marcella:  I’ve  played  for  3  years  and  it  is  an  interesting  sport  and  a  welsh  sport  and  my  mom  is  from  Wales.

Kyta:  1  year  and  I  started  because  I  like  it

Sadie:  1st  year  and  I  started  because  my  mom  told  me  our  friend  plays  and  its  really  fun

Loic:  1st  year  and  my  parents  play

Zea:  1st  year  and  my  parents  play

Sebastian:  about  2  months

Marcella  practicing  her  kicks.

What  do  you  love  about  rugby?  Will:  you  can  run  as  fast  as  you  can  and  do  anything  you

Marcella:  playing  with  friends

Sadie:  its  fun

Kyta:  playing  british  bull  dog

Loic:  I  can  run  and  use  my  hands  to  make  scores

Zea:  kicking

Sebastian:  you  get  to  tackle  when  you  are  older

What  makes  your  coach  super  awesome?  The  kids  said  collectively:  she  lets  everyone  have  a  chance  with  the  ball,  she’s  so  nice,  we  play  fun  games,  she’s  cool,  and  she  gives  us  instructions  on  how  to  get  a  goal.

Favorite  color  red  or  green?  Will,  Marcella,  and  Zea  said  Green,  Marcella  added  that  she  likes  it  because  it  is  earthy.

Sadi,  Loic,  and  Sebastian  said  Red,  Sadi  said  she  loves  red  because  its  just  Druids.

Kyta  said  very  seriously:  “Purple  and  Pink!”  In  response  to  my  but  what  about  between  green  or  red?  She  replied  “no  purple  and  pink.”  Perhaps  we  should  reconsider  our  club  colors  here  folks.
