Hello everyone, I hope you are enjoying the last few days of school (if that is possible). FRFs are vital to fill out if your club wants to get credit for any fundraiser you have done and you definitely deserve the credit. Now some of you may be thinking to yourselves “what does this crazy person mean when they say FRF?” Well, an FRF is an abbreviation for Fundraising Report Form. I know all of you know where the FRFs are, but here is the link just in case it had slipped your mind, http://nydkc.org/index.php?option=com_jforms&view=form&id=3. The form is very easy to fill out and once it is completed, all you need to do is mail or email me a proof of the fundraising activity (it can be a check, letter from charity, etc.) and a copy of the form. When I receive it, I will update it on

the FRF spreadsheet which can be given upon request by emailing me or by joining the Treasurer Google Group, which I hope you had joined already. If you are a club treasurer it would be a great idea to take advantage of the social network opportunities I set up. I know all of you have emails so please join our NYDKC-Treasurer Google group, http://groups.google.com/group/nydkc-treasurers. This group will keep you updated on important dates and paperwork. There is also a Facebook group called New York District Key Club Treasurers, please join it for important updates made easy. You can email me any questions but if you would like you can also post it on http://nydkctreasurers.wordpress.com/. I set this up to help all of you, so take advantage of it! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected], this email is where FRF’s should be sent. My mailing address to mail printed out proofs is 33 Helen Lane, West Sand Lake, NY 12196.

International Convention By Lieutenant Governor Jay Wong

Where can you find over a thousand Key Clubbers from around the world all squished into one hotel at one time waiting to exchange pins with each other, competing to see who has more spirit, and anxiously anticipating a few days worth of unforgettable workshops, dances, and shows? That’s right! Every year, Key Club International hosts its annual International Convention in a different city in the United States. This year, International Convention will be in Phoenix, Arizona at the JW Marriot Desert Ridge Resort from June 29th to July 3rd. While there, we will be electing our new International Board including the International President, Vice President, and their Board of Trustees. In addition, we will be having guest mentalist Craig Karegs, who will be doing an entertainment show, several dances, and a charity walk for the project ELIMINATE, which raises money for maternal neonatal tetanus. Several Key Clubbers who are attending International Convention are also attending the tour prior to that, which includes visiting the Grand Canyon, the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, and going white water rafting. Come join us in the fun next year if you haven’t gone before, and it will be an experience you will never forget!

District Projects: Continue to Fundraise! By Lieutenant Governor Nick Vivano

International Projects and Programs By Lieutenant Governor Sarah Brady

Unfortunately, I know that a lot of clubs tend to die down toward the end of the year as we begin to put halt on the number of events that we do. But, it should be expected that everyone come up with at least one solid idea during our break for the summer or upcoming school year. This can include a service project or fundraiser for one or more of the International Projects and Programs.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the International partners of Key Club, they are the Children’s Miracle Network, March of Dimes, and UNICEF. The Children’s Miracle Network is a nonprofit organization that raises money and brings awareness to benefit hospitalized children. Money raised goes to purchasing up-to-date equipment, train stall, conduct research, start outreach programs and provide health care for those whose parents cannot afford it. March of Dimes is an organization that tries to improve the health of infants by preventing premature births, birth defects and infant mortality. UNICEF is an organization that assists children through their community. They focus on improving health care, basic education, water, and sanitation in more than 150 developing countries. I’m sure many of you have heard of Trick-or-Treat for UNIFEC. These three programs are great and need your help! So just remember over the summer that you should brainstorm with your club or even just friends, and try to come up with an idea for this service year on how to benefit one or more of these organizations. You will hear shortly of the goals set forth by your International Projects and Programs Committee. Let’s make sure we surpass these goals!

Hello Key Clubbers! This past year has flown by and before we knew it, it has almost come to an end. But even though the year ended in a blink of an eye, New York District Key Clubs were able to raise an unprecedented $200,000 to the District’s Charities with $50,000 as the year’s goal. This year, with new charities, a new committee staff and a new fundraising goal, we eagerly embark on a new year of service to make a difference in our schools and communities. Our ten District Charities are very much diversified, ranging from eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus to ending human trafficking and slave labor trade. This year, the New York District Key Club aims to raise $200,000 for the ten charities including Kamp Kiwanis, Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation, Local Causes, Project Eliminate, Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center, Not For Sale, Make-A-Wish, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Christian Appalachian Project, and Architecture for Humanity. However, raising money is only a part of the puzzle. What’s the other piece? The other piece, which is sometimes forgotten but just as important, is awareness. In order to get people outside your Key Club Homes to donate at your fundraisers, they need to be educated on all the beneficial things that these charities do. Why would someone donate to a cause they do not have knowledge of? Lieutenant Governors Stephanie Penna, Kelsey Habla, Josh Hill, and Alexandra Marrone along with your Committee Chair Nick Viviano are here to answer any questions you may have about any of the charities along with ideas about how to spread awareness and fundraise. We wish you all a successful year of service!

Hello Fellow Key Clubbers! As the kickoff to the service year has already happened, it is now time to FUNDRAISE FUNDRAISE FUNDRAISE! My name is Sean O’Connor, and I am the Lieutenant Governor of Division 19. I am also the committee chair for my favorite District Project, Project Eliminate! For those of you who do not know, Eliminate is the newly acquired Kiwanis project, which will be kicked off this summer. Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, also known as MNT, is a disease that is claiming the lives of 60,000 innocent children and 30,000 mothers each and every single year. MNT’s effects on the youth of the world are sickening. Tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. This disease can and will be cured. Key Clubbers around the world can help cure this disease by 2015 by only fundraising $110 million! By curing this disease, we can help save over 360,000 lives! With committee members Lieutenant Governor Marcus Mosely, Lieutenant Governor Gresa Shala, and Lieutenant Governor Bryan Comanici, and Governor Domenick Pesce, I plan to make Project: Eliminate become the strongest District Project in the history of the mighty New York District!

Asthma Walk by Samer Khawaja

The Air Walk formerly known as the Asthma Walk took place last Saturday the 21st of May. As

always, we were required to wake up early and meet at six o’ clock in the morning in front of school. However, that was not all. I would like to apologize for the train schedule in which I was unaware that there would be so many service changes. Thus, our trip to Battery Park took over two hours. Luckily, thanks to the officers and members of Key Club, we were able to get back on track and head correctly towards our destination. We were late for the volunteer check-in, but Lauren, the coordinator, was sweet enough to catch us up with all the other volunteers.

We were designated to various checkpoints as Volunteer Marshalls which had the duty to direct walkers to the correct path. We sported red T-shirts. About thirty people attended this event. Having done the same event the year before, we were very happy to gather more information about the wonderful organization. It was another worthy experience as our members found fun within the event this year as well. After the walk, a short concert took place where Cee Lo Green, a famous artist performed. Certain members were real excited including a member named Monnie.

To end our day, we played volleyball with many volunteers from Stuyvesant High School. We went to eat pizza and when it came to going home, we were lost again. At least we went home safe. This walk shows the importance of always trying to keep our air clean in the environment. This isn’t for us; it is for the common good of everyone. Through our long struggling train rides, we were able to show our passion in service during this walk. Keep up the great work, Bryant Key Club; we are embarking on a new journey to make a difference in this world!

Greek Division Walk by Hosna Sarwary

The Greek Division Walk was held on May 14, 2011. Its purpose was to raise money for the

Ronald McDonald House. When we first arrived, our group was small, but we held dedicated hearts. At first, we were slightly confused on what to do. Not too long after, we figured out what to do and we immediately began signing in. Within moments, we were told that before the walk, we could get free breakfast. They were also giving out free cell phone holders, one that was in the shape of Key Club’s beloved mascot, the beaver.

It seemed that we arrived a bit early. The walk began an hour later. As we were walking, we were given balloons to the colors of red, blue, and white, representing the Greek and American flag. We had fun with just the balloons as we found interesting ways to make use of them. By the time the walk was finished, I felt as if we barely began to walk at all. It was real quick due to the fact that I was having so much fun.

When we reached the finish line, there were kebabs and drinks waiting for us, along with entertainment. Other than our own Bryant Greek Club, the Bryant Gymnastics group was there as well. They did many amazing stunts that left us Key Clubbers in awe. When it was time to leave we noticed how many members still residing where they were as many did not want to leave. This goes to show that upon Community Service, there is also entertainment. Community service can definitely bring closer bonds amongst all Key Clubbers.

William Cullen Bryant High School Attends the Special Olympics

by Mahenoor Baig

On May 7th, 2011, William Cullen Bryant Key Club participated in the Special Olympics as volunteers. Special Olympics is a tournament held for people of all ages who have mental and physical disabilities. This event gives these people a chance to have fun as they play basic sports with others. This year’s Special Olympics Tournament was held in Victory Field, Forest Park in Queens. It was a worthy event of attendance. It was truly a memorable experience causing a type of impact on everyone who attended the event. Our immediate past Lieutenant Governor of Division 8 before its split, Christina An and our current Lieutenant Governor of Division 8-A, Carla Pacheco attended this event with five members from our Key Club.

We were stationed to help out at the softball game, which differed from the traditional softball to accommodate those with special needs. Francisco, our vice president, guided the people who were participating to our station and back to the awards table. Every participant got an award to show that they are truly appreciated. Carla, Christina, and two other members from John Adams Key Club were stationed in one court. Cindy (from Martin Luther Key Club), Koko, Luisa, Annuary, and I were to help the participants throw bean sacks (which were used to impersonate softballs for safety reasons) and cheer them on.

Seeing the smiles on the player’s faces after playing simple tasks was a blessing for everyone and it was all because of Key Club. This happened thanks to a lot of members in Key Club. A simple task that we do can bring hundreds of smiles to their faces. The smiles they gave us was heart warming, they showed us that our presence and support meant the world to them. Their smiles meant the world to us.

The 2011 AIDS Walk by Linda Zhou

Through and through, Key Clubbers have shown their dedication to the club. On May 15th, 2011, it was no different. Every year, the AIDS Walk has proved itself to be one of the biggest events of the year. Gathering behind the Apple store located in lower Manhattan, the members formed a sea of blue. Many of them were proudly representing our club with the hoodie designed for the 2010-2011 year. After President Li took attendance, she led the club to Central Park. The Key Clubbers made their way towards Stuyvesant High School’s Team Meet-Up area, where we all took some group photos. After having some delays, we were finally off! Little did we know that we were only a few among many thousands of people.

Headfirst into Service by Sheng Lin

Once the first day of May hit, we did not waste any time. On that day, we participated in the March for Babies, which was an event to gain support for a world of healthy babies. This was a great opportunity for various members from different backgrounds to get well acquainted with each other. Once the 3.5 mile walk was over, we took the time to enjoy ourselves in the great weather and new friends that were made. Although the March for Babies was over, the day for LaGuardia Key Club was not over yet. After the walk, we rushed to Columbia University, where a screening of a documentary called "Standard 8" was being shown. The purpose of the event was to tell the story of an 8th grade class struggling for an education, something that is truly priceless. However, However, this class of 31 students in Kenya continues to show strength and hope for the future. Hosted by LaGuardia Key Club, this event was successful as it motivated and inspired many of those who had attended. Later in the month, LaGuardia Key Club traveled with the rest of our school in the 2011 Aids Walk. Our school was able to provide T-shirts for every single one of us so we could show off our amazing team and the awesome cause we were walking for. Although the weather was not nice and the walk was very long, I'm glad that so many of our Key Clubbers made it out to the event and stayed strong until the end. In the month of May, we are proud to have been able to also help so many people within the city. We volunteered at multiple soup kitchen events and we also helped deliver food to seniors. It was extremely fun doing hands-on activities in the soup kitchen, as well as seeing the faces of those we were helping when we delivered the meals. In addition, we provided service to our community within our school through the drives that we have held. One collecting toiletry items for those in need of it and other was a supply drive, where school supplies were collected for students in Kenya. Throughout the month of May, we have gained much joy and happiness in the service we provide to others, and May has surely been a strong start to a potentially great service year in LaGuardia Key Club.

When I came into high school freshman year, I was scared to join or participate in anything because of my timidity, lack of courage, and the intimidating amount of responsibility. However, after looking at the numerous successes Nadyli had achieved, I felt that I had nothing to be afraid of. Nadyli really inspired me to take chances and express who I am by doing the things that I love. She loved Key Club and just service in general, which is why she came so far. Thanks so much for being a great mentor. Even though we haven't talked much, your actions have influenced and inspired me to chase after what I love and make a difference. I hope this new service year will be just as successful as the one you led, and I hope you go on to do far greater things in your life, loving every single thing you do. People say that actions define who you are, and I think the

actions that you made have defined you as a great leader. Your home club is proud of you Nadyli and we love you very much!

~ Tina Lee and HSMSE

To the past HSMSE board: Thank you for all your hard work from the past year. Your influence in our key club has made it what it is today. We will miss your guidance . We will see this key club through your eyes, as ours will be seen through yours. We love you all and we'll miss you so much! Keep on shining in college.

~ Love, the New Board.

AIDS Walk 2011 by Tina Lee

This year's Aids Walk was an event that I will never be able to forget. Not only were there numerous HSMSE Key Club attendees and volunteers, but there were even larger groups of people from all over the New York area. One of the greatest things to see was the fact that so many people attended even though there was a period of time where the rain was nonstop pouring. Volunteers, walkers, star walkers, families, organizations, and other Key Clubs all came together for a good cause, despite the gloomy weather. That's what I call true dedication. It's also beautiful to see how with teamwork, we can make a difference. Not only did we make a difference by supporting the fight against AIDS, but we also cheered on all the enduring walkers and volunteers, creating an exultant mood that cleared up the cloudy skies. My home club definitely enjoyed the entire experience because we got to spend time with each other as well as meet new people. Whenever we saw other Key Clubbers walking, we would all gather together and yell to them, "How do you feel?!" We always got an ecstatic response that made everyone smile and laugh. We also made cheers that went: "G-O! Let's go walkers! G-O, let's go! G-O! Go star walkers! G-O, let's go!" This was a adaptation of one of the HSMSE's cheerleading team's cheers. Overall, there were many fun-filled memories we got out of the Aids Walk and I think it was a moment of a lifetime. Volunteer events like these always remind me why I love service so much. It's amazing to see what impact only a couple high school students can produce by just helping out. I'm definitely excited for more projects to come and I hope it will be as rewarding as this one.

Shoutout from StuyKC! by Cyndi Chin

Finals are over and summertime is here, which means nonstop volunteering! This past week, the board members of Stuyvesant High School Key Club have been holding interviews for our future Committee Chairs. We will be finalizing our decision at our Induction Party which will take place at the end of June. The Induction Party is where we will also be commemorating the old cabinet and celebrating the accomplishment of Key Clubbers for this school year.

Our first event for the month was at the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) as Volunteer Kitchen Assistants. We helped the staff prepare and serve a selective choice of entrees. Despite the mess, it was really fun and it felt good to give back to the community. Stuyesant Key Club members also attended the 2011 Walk Now for Autism Speaks. The project captain, Qiu Wu, led fellow key clubbers in helping with preparation, arts and crafts, handing our refreshments and clean up. Qiu noted that the people she met came from all different parts of the nation, not only the city, which made it even more worthwhile. Other volunteer events that we were involved in this month were the Liver Life Walk and Math Tutoring.

2010-2011 Key Club Service Year Commemorations I would like to sincerely thank the 2010-2011 Board, the brilliant International Trustee Nancy Zhang, and all the new members for making this past service year truly a success. We have done so much, growing in ways I had never imagined, and this would not have been possible without you all!

~ Emma Cheng To the seniors, you truly rose up as leaders and helped pave the way for the rest of our club. We will undoubtedly miss you and we promise to perpetuate your legacy with our service and work!

~ 2011-2012 Board

Members of Hunter Key Club volunteered on Sunday, May 15 to help at AIDS Walk New York this year. Although the day started a bit gloomy, with heavy showers until around 9 AM, all members had a great time helping with sign-in and seeing all the enthusiastic walkers arrive. People who raised over $1,000 became Star Walkers and received a special crown for the rest of the walk. There were only a few who were able to raise so much money alone, but each time they came to register, an entire line of volunteers would congratulate and applaud for them. By the end of the walk, cheering and laughter could be heard from Central Park’s Bandshell, with food, music, and beverages. Despite the weather, the project was an exciting and enjoyable way to give back to the community.

AIDS Walk 2011 and Finale to 2010-2011 Year

A Message from Immediate Past District Bulletin Editor Jensen Cheong (Stuyvesant High School '11)

Imagine a day where Key Clubs from all over the city and metropolitan area come together. For veteran members, we all know which event comes to mind when I say that. For new members, I hope you too will know what I am talking about. The AIDS Walk is a yearly event highlighted not only by the great amount of money raised but also by the devoted and caring volunteers and walkers it hosts. It is one of the events I look forward to. Key Clubbers working and walking with one another united under a single cause. Division 11, one of the largest and renowned divisions in the district, has always brought a large number of students to the AIDS Walk. This year was no different. I was very pleased to see students from many of the schools. I had the honor to volunteer with a school other than my own and wave to walkers from Division 11. After serving as your District Bulletin Editor, I find it hard to not volunteer with Key Clubbers all over the city. Sitting to my left was a Key Clubber from the Bronx High School of Science. Sitting to my right was a Key Clubber from Bayside High School. At the same time, I was registering a Key Clubber from Brooklyn Technical High School. Four different schools came together on one tiny section of the park. What are the odds of that happening on any regular day? They say that Key Club is a very big family. When families break apart there is a tremendous amount of pain that is felt. That is how I feel right now. I have been a part of this family for four years. There have been ups and downs. Yet, this was the best experience of high school. As the days count down to graduation, so do my days as a Key Clubber. It is the successes that make me want to remain in Key Club forever. This year was filled with successes. I want to congratulate Division 11 for another amazing year and wish Emma the best for the next year.
