Alfa Romeo day at Cars & Coffeeturned out great as usual. I didn’tcount the number of Alfas, butsomebody said there were 60something. I don’t believe we seta new attendance record as therewas room for a few more cars inthe aisles. After checking out theAlfas as well as the other cars, weformed up for the private carcollection tour and moseyed downthe road a mile or two where wetightened up the ranks andproceeded on to the collection.

I pulled rank and brought my son,Owen, along as a guest. Thecollection was a little heavy onPorsches for an Alfa enthusiast, but contained some very nice carsincluding a Giulietta Sprint Zagatoand a 2600 Sprint Zagato. Iparticularly enjoyed checking out apair of 1952 Ferraris, one stockstreet car and one race car, parkedside-by-side. When Derrickstarted up the race car, it coughed& spit back violently through theWebers for a couple of minutesbefore smoothing out nicely. Can’thelp but wonder how much cam ithas. More than my Veloce I’ll bet.My son paid a high compliment tothe collection by noting that, if hehad the money, he would wantquite a number of the very samecars. Our thanks to the collector

who does not wish to be mentionedby name.

We adjourned to the Clines whereJan worked her usual culinarymagic. Chris went direct to theClines to give Jan a hand, but Isuspect little help was needed. Itwas nice to see nearly newmembers, Eric and Margaret, againand Chris & I lunched with brandnew members, Harry and Laura. We had a short meeting after lunchand I failed to introduce them, butour former (more like current)Social Director, Sheila Kutkus, rose to the occasion and gave me anudge.

June marks a big transition for theAROSC. It’s the first monthwhere we are emailing theAlfacionada to the majority of ourmembers in lieu of a paper copy. Ifind it is best to View theelectronic version in Two-Upformat which mimics how we readthe paper copy. Note that theemailed copy does not display theemail addresses or names of therecipients to better protect yourprivacy. Internet security issomething we all worry about andyou may see more safeguards aswe move forward. The Board hasworked diligently to iron out all ofthe distribution details, but I

suppose there will be a fewgrowing pains. If you have beenmeaning to opt for the paper copyand haven’t, please contact ElyseBarrett.

Our next event, the HuntingtonBeach Concours, is one weekaway as I write this. Hopefully, our Sprint, which was spiffed upfor Cars & Coffee, will only needa few minor tweaks. It is getting anew fuel tank sending unit and newair hoses to the heating andventilation systems. Our Tech.Director, Gene Brown, who judgedmy car last year, might even noticethat an unsightly area around oneof the rear jack points has beenrepaired.

Chris & I have a familycommitment and will not be at ShinYoshikawa’s on the 25th. This isthe first time Shin has extended usan invite and seeing his Alfas andshop should be a real treat. Shin isthe artist that does all thosewonderful cutaway drawings aswell as an accomplished sheet

metal bender who builds one-offmodels. Look elsewhere in thisissue for more details.

We will be at Alfapalooza atGladstones on July 2nd. TheBarretts started this event 2 yearsago and it has grown ever since.Time to spiff up the Sprint onemore time. Also, time to makesure the parking brake is fullyfunctional since we will be parkingon a dock. This really is the carshow season and the time of yearwhen the Sprint gets all of theattention i/o collecting dust.

The Wine Tour is 2 weeks later, and at least for us winos, is one ofthe high points of the year. Goodroads. Good scenery. Good food.Good wine. What’s not to like?

Remember, if the women don’tfind you handsome, they should atleast find you handy. And don’tforget the duct tape, a handyman’ssecret weapon.

TTTTTech:ech:ech:ech:ech: Taking a Stand

by Gene Brown

If you do much mechanical work onolder automobiles sooner or later youwill probably be attempting an enginerebuild. Once you remove the engineyou need someplace to disassemble it.You can throw it on top of your workbench but the 400 – 600 pound weightmight be too much for it, plus flippingit over to get to all the different sideswill be a little difficult. The answer isto get an engine stand. The commonengine stand runs anywhere from $50to $200 and can be used with mostengines. It consists of a base with avertical post that holds the enginemounting plate. The mounting plateconnects to the rear of the engineblock and allows you to rotate theengine to get to the top, bottom orsides of the engine.

The problem I have with these typesof engine stands is that the engine iscantilevered off of the bell housingmounts. There are a few problems withthis type of mounting. First you haveno access to the clutch/flywheel areaand second all of the weight of theengine is being borne by the bellhousing mounting ears on the back ofthe block. And third of all, that is a lotof weight hanging there in space.

For the standard cast iron engine thebell housing mounting points areplenty strong but on our aluminumAlfa engines the mounts are using 8mm bolts/studs. The designers of theautomobile engines, be they Ford

302’s or Alfa 2 liters did not plan onhanging the engine from the rear, instead they cast in motor mountbosses, usually about the middle ofthe block, to hold the engine. Thefactory engine stands I have seenalways use the motor mounts forholding the engine.

People have adapted the commonengine stand to mount to one of themotor mount locations by fabricatingan adapter, and since the engine isheld by the side you have full accessto the clutch/flywheel area. Howeveryou still have the engine cantileveredout in space. I just get nervous withthat much weight hanging there.

Some people have taken things a stepfurther and modified two enginestands so that they can support theengine by the motor mounts on bothsides. This is by far the best solution. You still have access to both the frontand back of the engine and it is nowsupported on both sides so there areno large stresses on the block.

I made a stand such as this when I didthe rebuild on my 2 liter spider engineand it worked just fine. When I usedthe same stand on my Montreal V8 Idiscovered an additional problem. Themotor mounts are not necessarily atthe center of gravity of the engine, and even if they were when you add/remove parts the center of gravityshifts. The Montreal engine was about100 pounds nose heavy and it tooktwo people to rotate the engine, one to

AAAAAlfacionada - Jlfacionada - Jlfacionada - Jlfacionada - Jlfacionada - June 2011une 2011une 2011une 2011une 2011 Page 9Page 9Page 9Page 9Page 9

keep the engine from dropping toofast or to lift the engine into positionand the other to put the locking pininto the rotator.

So for my next rebuild, a Datsun 240Zengine, I decided I had to have abetter solution. I needed a way ofoffsetting the pivot/motor mountconnection to line the pivot point upwith the center of gravity and to alsohave it adjustable so that I can adjustthe offset to allow for changes in theengine due to adding/removing parts.

So after a year and a half of thinking, designing, fabricating, re-designingand re-fabricating and so on, I havecome up with what I call the “UltimateHome Engine Stand”. I have screwthread adjusters so that I can movethe engine both back and forward andup and down. It has a large enoughbase to be stable even with a straighteight engine and it can be brokendown so that I can store the entirething on a shelf. The end result is thatI can adjust the engine so that I canrotate it with one hand regardless of

the weight of the engine. And afterusing the stand to disassemble the240Z engine I can state that it worksjust great.

And I did it all myself. I usedSolidWorks to design all the parts andused a friend’s machine shop tofabricate the parts. I welded the framewith my MIG welder and even powdercoated the smaller parts in my garage.Since I had never used a mill or a lathebefore and have very little weldingexperience we will not get into thelarge quantity of scrap parts I created.Altogether I have about $800 (notcounting the scrap) in material and Idon’t even want to think about thenumber of hours I put in. Is it overkill?Probably, but it was fun doing it andthat’s the whole point isn’t it? I meanif we were all concerned with the cost/benefit tradeoffs then we wouldn’t bedriving Alfas, would we?

My kids say I should patent thisdesign and sell them. Maybe, isanyone interested in buying a $10,000engine stand?

Paula and I just returned from a twoweek trip to Liberia, West Africa, attending the dedication of the newtranslation of the Bible into a WestAfrican tribal language. This was thecompletion of a project that my sisterNancy started work on as a missionarynearly forty years ago. Nancy and herteam of Liberian translators hadfinished the New Testament by 2001when she died in an auto accident inLiberia. The Liberian team memberspicked up the project and have nowcompleted the translation and printingof the entire Bible some tenyears later. The Klao language Biblewill allow these people to hear andread the scriptures in their nativetongue.

While there we were able to travelinland some 120 miles to the GantaUnited Methodist Hospital that wasestablished by missionaries in 1926,long before there were any roads intothe interior. On our way out of thecapital city, Monrovia, we saw AN

ALFA, a model 156 sedan with a a“For Sale” sign in the window. To thebest of my knowledge, Alfa has nopresence in Liberia and I have no ideawhere they might have to go for parts. Most of the cars, SUVs, andsmall trucks we saw were eitherToyotas or Nissans.

Can you imagine a city of nearly amillion people with no traffic lights? The electric power is so unreliable thatthey would do no good. The weatherwas hot and humid anduncomfortable. Temperatures werebetween 85 and 90 most of thetime with humidity at 95 to 100percent. Fans helped unless theelectricity went off which it didregularly. The people we met werewarm and friendly and made us feelwelcome. It turned out to be a mostrewarding trip but after aflight time of 19 hours, we were glad tobe home.

If you can get there on Thursday, don’t miss the Pebble Beach Tour carson Ocean Avenue at noon. Many of the Pebble Beach Concours carsparticipate in this, a 70-mile tour of the Carmel/Monterey area whichpauses on Ocean Avenue in Carmel for lunch from about 12 to 2:30PM.Spectators are free at that time to wander among the 100 or so cars thatare parking in a four lane, four-block area and it is FREE! Google“Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance” for more information. Spectatorparking is difficult so get there early.

Concorso Italiano is Friday’s Event, once again at Laguna Seca Golfranch on Rt. 68. This is always fun for the Alfa crowd: sign your car upat www.concorso.com sooner rather than later as the price goes up thelonger you wait. As an added incentive for you to attend; ARA is againorganizing an after-Concorso dinner at Balesteri’s Restaurant on site atthe golf course. If you elected to do this dinner last year, you know hownice it was and will be again this year. Have a modestly priced buffetdinner for $40 a person (including tax and tip) and no-host drinks. Pleaseplan to join us at this nice event, beginning at 5:00 PM thru 10:00PM, toavoid traffic and hassles upon departing Concorso while enjoying a nicedinner at the same time.

Delta Sierra AROC is once again blocking out 40 rooms at the laurel Innin Salinas for the Alfa clubs, at the same rates as last year. As for race tickets and Alfa corral passes, there are a few changesagain this year. As you can see from the accompanying order blank,

admission tickets for the races are $15 higher across the board in allcategories compared to last year, and corral passes are again $10 eachfor the three-day pass, BUT included with your corral pass are anofficial Program (worth $10 by itself), and official event poster ($20) andan Event Dash Plaque (not otherwise available). So this somewhatsoftens the increase in ticket prices and still makes the corral passattractive. However, these bonus items will not be available until RaceWeek and you will have to pick them up on Saturday when you park yourcar in the corral. Also please note that requests for corral passesAFTER the Friday, July 1 cut-off date will NOT BEACCOMMODATED as they must be ordered with the race tickets.

Phyllis Gaylard’s house in Huntington Harbor has plenty of back yard, paved patio, and shade. She still has Jay Wachtel’s bocce balls, and thelawn is in good shape, freshly cut the day before. She is located about amile from the ocean and beaches, up on a hill with a great breeze. Thereis plenty of street parking and a shopping center (with a new TraderJoe’s Market!) one block away if the street fills up.

We will again have a potluck lunch, and request that attendees bringsomething to share that we can nosh, snack, or munch upon. We suggestprimarily home-prepared dishes, cold or room temperature. We can heatup some things in the oven or microwave, but want to limit the stove-topcooking to just a few items. Wines are also always welcome!

As in the past, there will be no charge for this event. However, we askthat all attendees bring a food dish to share. If you can’t cook or bringfood, you can make a $5 donation per person and Phyllis will buy what isneeded to complete the menu. In order for this to work, you must call orE-mail an RSVP before party day. Suggested food categories includebut are not restricted to: antipasto, appetizers, salads, sandwich makings, casseroles, pasta dishes, desserts or anything appealing as luncheon fare.Just tell Phyllis what it is so she can coordinate and provide a completemenu.

Alfapalooza is Coming! July 2!

Come celebrate the 2011 Transpacific Yacht Race on Saturday, July 2and be a part of the pier-side color at Gladstone’s Long Beach as someof the most distinguished ocean racing yachts gather for their biennial2,250-mile slide to Hawaii.

In 2009 New Zealand and Australia Alfa Romeo distributor NevilleCrichton brought his 100-foot maxi racer to the event and as a supporterof the marque, we became supporters of his mission to break theTranspac speed record. He graciously gave Club members a tour of theboat and talked with us about the vessel, the event and his network ofdealerships Down Under. The next week, he did indeed smash therecord for the event. At press time, we don’t know what he has entered, but this will be the third Alfapalooza in as many years, and we are nowpart of the party!

Last year we gathered in mid-June for a milder day on the waterfrontand had a walking gimmick rally to amuse ourselves and build an appetitefor the fabulous appetizer menu at Gladstone’s.

Alfa RequiredThis is an Alfa showcase and you must drive your Alfa to be able to parkwith us at the Transpac Patio and on the Rainbow Pier, hosted by JohnSangmeister, manager of Gladstone’s.

We typically have 30 cars from AROSC and our friends from CentralCoast and San Diego chapters. It is a great excuse for a party and to seesome folks from outside the area.

View the YachtsThe race starts in three-day waves and there will be sailboats from 36 to100 feet moored in and around our pier. You can walk the docks andview the boats, relax in the shade on the patio outside Gladstone’s and ofcourse, hang out with your car.

Schedule the EventMark your calendar for July 2 and look for more information here and ine-blasts from AROSC. You may also friend Gladstone’s Long Beach onFacebook, and see all the other goings-on.

Perfect weather and a decent turnoutmade the club’s May Buttonwillowevent very pleasant. Buttonwillow isprobably the most user friendly trackof all we have visited, at least in therecent past. While most of the tracksthe club has used permit camping,Buttonwillow is specifically set up forthis, with spectator/participant areawhich is almost park-like. It is niceenough that this is the one track towhich I have been able to convince mywife Gena to come.

For this trip, we had a bit of a familygathering in the motor-home: my wifeGena and I, my mother Irene, mybrother Mitch, my daughter Andrea, her two dogs, Brooks and Butters, andmy own pooch, Meisha.

My Mustang Cobra would appear tobe done for the season, so our oldstandard, Big Dog, the Mustang GTwas the weapon of choice for Mitch,Rob, and I. I was in race group, Robwas in open time trial, and Mitch and Iwere scheduled to share Big Dogduring the enduro.

The new computerized system forregistration appears to be working out,as the crowds have certainly increasedsince the club began using it. Therewas a rather nice turn out for the D/Eand solo group. Chief instructor TonyPresto heads up that group, and I washonored he requested I assist in

instructing. I was assigned to a younggentleman, Kyle Murphy, and hissomewhat new Volkswagen GTI and, after driving that car, I have got to getsome paddle shifters. Also in the D/Efield were a couple of M3’s and a SaabTurbo. The overall group alsoincluded 97-year-old Fred Hamilton, driving his Hemi Dodge Charger.

One of the hallmarks of the springevent at Buttonwillow is the club’sannual two-hour endurance race. Itwould have been nice to have moreentries, but we had 12, and the racecommenced at 4:00PM, Saturdayafternoon. Steve Hamilton jumped outto an early lead driving CharlieSpencer’s Mustang (Charlie’s happy,as this has been a work-in-progress foryears now); an early lead which began, anyway, after Jes Thyssen’s Catarham7 just quit after about a lap and a half.In the meantime, I started Big Dogabout mid-pack, had third placesecured by the time I rolled over LostHill on the north side of the course, overcooked it coming over the hill, turned it sideways, slid off and thenslid back on, sliding to a stopsideways in the middle of the course.I looked out my driver’s window, andsaw pretty much the entire packbarreling down the hill straight at me,so the only thing to do was to shove itin first and drive it straight off thetrack again so as to get out of the way.I rejoined the race dead last, and after18 or 19 laps, was eventually able to

scratch and claw my way into secondplace.

I would have expected thumbs up fromthe starter stand or the corner workersfor such a stunning drive, but insteadgot a black flag for all the smoke whichwas trailing behind the car (I thoughtit was all in the cockpit).

It turned out, among other things(other things being a leaking powersteering pump, a couple of fried sparkplug wires, and an engine that wasburning oil) that the driver’s sideexhaust assembly had fallen apart, soit was back behind the wall. For thenext hour Rob worked like a demon, and Mitch eventually limped the carout with a couple of minutes left torecord a finish.

In the meantime, pit stops wereoccurring, and we had all forgottenabout the fact that the BMW of BruceColby and Brad Grey was an economyrunner. Their pit stop was driver only,no fuel, and lasted about one minute, after which they never looked backand won the race. The next fasteststop appeared to be the driver changeand fuel stop of the Dennis Fibrow/Andrea Bordato MR2, in less than twoand a half minutes.

The crowd thinned out somewhat forSunday, some voluntarily, some

involuntarily (Joe Cobb in open trimtrial, again qualified for the “Goody’sHeadache” award when a crossed wireon his Mustang burned everythingnot made of metal in his enginecompartment on Saturday afternoon. There was also some rain, which hadan interesting effect on the open timetrailers, every one of whom but Andreacame into the pits when it started torain during their session.

In the race, Steve Hamilton drove theHenderson Mustang and, this time, with no pit stop, he literally ran away. There were races going on all overbehind him with a particularly goodone involving Beverly Major in theMR2 and Dave Burgoon in his Alfa, and they hammered on each other forabout three-quarters of the race.

In the time trial, top time of the day(for everyone, in fact, race groupsincluded) went to Nizam Zambri in thevery nice Ferrari 360CS at 2:05.45.Nextup were Fabrizio and Anthony Rimicciwhose Alfas ran like clocks and toreup the track all weekend long, eachwinning their respective classes. Infat, Anthony’s 2:11.58 appears to be anew Class B record.

Looks like it will be a bit of a breakuntil Willow. Hopefully, we will haveat least on of the Mustangs runningagain.
