Issue No. 2008-06

Interfaith Works promotes interfaith understanding, and serves the community through

charitable, social and educational endeavors.

TRANSITIONS

With sadness and best wishes, Interfaith Works bids fond farewell to three dear friends, pastors of three of IW’s member congregations who are retiring this summer and moving on to new endeavors, new adventures, or new positions.

Sunday, June 8, was Pastor Dale Cockrum’s last day at First United Methodist Church of Olympia (FUMCO) where he has served as senior pastor for twelve years. He and his wife JoAnna have moved to Spokane, where Dale will take up his new position as District Superintendent with responsibility for 51 United Methodist Congregations.

On Saturday, June 21, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will honor Pastor Phil Rue and his wife Mary for their ministry of more than 14 years in Olympia. In answer to the oft-repeated question, “What are you going to do in your retirement?” Phil answers with his characteristic smile, and a twinkle, “I’m going to Disneyland!” He and Mary are excited to be planning lots of family time in the coming months, and plan to continue living in Olympia.

Rev. Anna Joy Grace, pastor of Unity of Olympia since 1997, will be leaving at the end of June. Her plans are to earn an M.A. at Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies, and to conduct an alternative Unity ministry through writing, consulting and training.

Interfaith Works and our greater community have benefited greatly from the friendship, support and guidance of these three talented and compassionate spiritual leaders. We wish them every success and happiness as they work, study and play!

CROP WALK UPDATE

If you were a 2008 Thurston County Crop Walker or Recruiter, please be sure to turn in all envelopes and funds collected by June 30. Please call Carol Gruen, Crop Walk Treasurer, at 352-9703 if you have outstanding envelopes; she will even help collect those last few contributions!

The present count for money raised is at over $50,000. As soon as all walker envelopes are accounted for, Carol will report the total amount raised by this year’s Thurston County Walk. So, in the July Interfaith Connection, we should be able to report how much we raised and how many walkers p a r t i c i p a t e d . T H ANK YOU , THURSTON COUNTY RESIDENTS, for helping to feed your hungry neighbors!

IW BLESSES THE COMMUNITY by Barbara Gibson

One gray Friday afternoon, June 12, IW members and people from the community gathered outside the Greyhound bus station to perform a Moment of Blessing where Macario Pablo Chales, formerly of Guatemala, died of homicide May 20. Carol McKinley, a Unitarian Universalist community minister and former IW Board member, presided at the brief ceremony, which provides a way to reclaim places of violence as places of life and peace.

Standing together in a circle, the ten or so participants spoke words of healing: “In the midst of our pain, may we find comfort…in the midst of sorrow, hope…in the midst of death, new life.” A time of silence was observed, after which a white ribbon was added to the IW Memory Pole, which now holds the names of twelve victims of homicide in Thurston County.

After the ceremony, participants shared their feelings about violence, homelessness, and poverty. “I feel close to the people here today, even though we are strangers,” said one young woman, formerly homeless herself.

IN PURSUIT OF PEACE

Community Meditation for Global Peace, founded by Dickie Baker, has evolved since its inception in 2004. Now called Community Meditation and Prayer for Global Peace, the 5th annual event will take place August 2 & 3.

This year, the 24 hours of meditation and prayer will be preceded by a Walking Meditation for Peace which will begin at 11:15 am on Saturday,

August 2, at Marathon Park. The walking meditation will proceed in silence from the park counter-clockwise along Capitol Lake, and up the trail to the Capitol Campus. Walkers will arrive

at Tivoli Fountain in time for the opening of the Community Meditation and Prayer for Global Peace at noon.

Your participation in this event is invited for any amount of time. Whether or not you do the Walking Meditation, you may come to pray or meditate in silence at any time between noon August 2 and noon August 3. If you have questions, please call 357-7224 weekday mornings.

SHOW US YOU CARE!

There are a number of ways that you can support the ongoing work of Interfaith Works. Which one is right for you?

♦ Volunteer with IW. You could be on a committee, work at an event, take minutes at our monthly meetings, or occasionally help with office work. See our Volunteer page online or call the office for ideas.

♦ Use GoodSearch as your online search engine and GoodShop as the starting point for your online shopping. Every search earns one cent for IW, and IW will get some money for each of your online purchases. Visit www.goodsearch.com or call the IW office for help setting it up.

♦ Pledge to make a monthly contribution of $5 or $10 or more. IW will send you envelopes for mailing your contributions.

♦ Designate IW as the recipient of your United Way or State Combined Fund Drive donations.

WHO'S WHO AT I DOUBLEYOO: Kathleen Peppard

Hi, I'm Kathleen Peppard, just signed on to a second term on the Board of Directors of IW. My "day" job is lay leader of the Community for Interfaith Celebration (CIC) where my family has been involved for the past 19 years.

My faith journey began in Catholicism, of the Irish Catholic variety. I currently consider myself to be on an interfaith journey, with Buddhist practice and study being a major focus, as well as Progressive Christianity. "Interfaith" really works for

me and I'm so grateful to have been exposed to Jewish holidays, Sufi practices, and Dances of Universal Peace through CIC. My involvement in Interfaith Works is a natural outgrowth of these interests and pursuits. I believe we can all make a contribution to peace in the world by getting to know one another, appreciating our differences and finding commonalities. I am also committed to the social service aspect of IW.

My previous career was in clinical social work, mostly doing counseling and some teaching. I have two aging teenage sons (17 and 19), an interfaith husband who is a member of CIC and the Nalanda Institute for Buddhist Studies, and two short-legged dogs (a corgi and a dachshund). When not attached to my laptop, I like to work in the garden or, more likely, think about working in the garden while reading a gardening book. I'm a big fan of compost, poetry, good coffee and strong tea.

BLESSED TO GIVE

Everybody seems to have advice for how to spend that economic stimulus check you’re expecting in the mail. Some want you to spend it on a vacation, or make a down payment on a new car. Some are offering more constructive advice: pay off debt, save for your kids’ education, or make some home improvements.

One of IW’s faithful supporters, who has already received her check, wrote a lovely note and sent a liberal donation to Interfaith Works. If you think for a minute, you’ll realize that donating that money makes it do double duty. A cash donation to a 501(c)(3) organization enhances the work, of course, and you can claim that donation as a deduction on your next tax return.

When your check comes in the mail, will you consider making a generous donation to Interfaith Works? We promise to spend it wisely and carefully for the benefit of our community.
