NotaMarketer’sDream…FromtimetotimeIhearwell-intentionedCatholicstalkabout“marketing”Catholiceducation.Thatalwaysmakesmewince.FromwhatIunderstand,thegoalofmarketing,atleastinthebusinessworld,istotrytomakeaproductappearappealing.Thegoalistoconvinceconsumersthatwhat’sbeingpromotedwill—dependingontheproductorservice—makethemhappy,successful,powerful,attractive,relaxed,excited,in luential,knowledgeable,wealthy,employable,healthy,popular,orsomethingsimilar.Thepitch,inbrief,seemstobe“Buythisandgetwhatyouwant.”Incontrast,Catholiceducation,liketheCatholicChristianfaithingeneral,isnotaboutgettingwhatyouwant.It’saboutwhatisTRUE.Morespeci ically,it’saboutwhatisTRUEaboutGodandangelsandhumanbeings,themeaningoflife,whatGodwantsforusandfromus,love,whatcanleadustoheavenandwhatcanleadustohell,thepurposeandimportanceoftheChurch,theLastThings(death,judgment,hell,purgatoryandheaven),thesacraments,rightandwrong,goodandevil,andwhatcanmakeushappyinthislifeandthenext.Alotofwhatistrueisnotveryappealingat irstsight.Sometimesittakesawhiletoappreciateit.AnexampleofthisisthedogmaoftheTrinity,whichwecelebrateinaspecialwaythisSunday.ThefactthatthereisonlyOneGod,andthatHehasalwaysexistedasThreeDivinePersons,canalmostgiveyouaheadacheifyoutrytoohardtounderstandit.Itappearsridiculousor

unbelievabletomanypeopleofotherreligions,suchasJews,Muslims,andUnitarians.SowhydoweChristiansbelieveintheTrinity?BecauseGodhasrevealedthatthat’sWhoHeIs.ThewordsofSacredScripturewitnesstothefactboththatthereisOneGod,andthattheFatherisGod,theSonisGod,andtheHolySpiritisGod.TherearehintsofitallthroughtheBible,beginningwiththeBookofGenesis.JesusChristmadeitmoreobvious,forexamplewhenHeinstructedHisapostlesto“gothereforeandmakedisciplesofallnations,baptizingtheminthename[not“names”]oftheFatherandoftheSonandoftheHolySpirit.”Thisthree-foldnameoftheMostHolyTrinityiswhatpeoplearebaptizedandabsolvedwith,it’showwebeginandendprayers,andit’spartoftheRosary.Hopefully,thelongerweareChristians,themorewewillappreciate,gettoknow,andlove—ifnotunderstand—theTrinity.ThedogmaoftheTrinityisalsoanargumentforthetruthoftheChristianfaith,andagainsttheabsurdbeliefsomepeoplehavethatthetwelveapostles,orlaterbishops,ortheRomanEmperorConstantine,justdevelopedandpromotedChristianityforpersonalreasons.Therewerealotofotherreligionsaroundbackthen—astherearenow—thatwereeasiertounderstand,madefewerdemands,orpromisedgreaterearthlyhappiness.ThefactthathundredsofmillionsofpeopleovertheyearshavetakenChristianityseriously—believingitandtryingtoliveit—justgoestoshowthatit’snotahumaninvention.Assuch,itdoesn’tneedmarketingtosurvive.ItjustneedsGod.GlorytotheFather,andtotheSon,andtotheHolySpirit!~FatherRudolph

JamieFreemanandherhusbandMarkfoundoutearlyintheirpregnancythattheywereexpectingasonwhohadDownsyndrome.Bothparents,intheirlate30s,criedforweeks.ButwhenBenjamin(Benny)wasborn,Jamie’sfearsoftheunknowndissolvedandnow,lookingback,sherealizedallofthosetearsandanxietieswereunnecessary.Asaresult,Jamiedecidedtobeginadiary,sharingherinitialstruggle,inallitspainfulhonesty.Thepages,shesaid,werestainedwithcoffee,teaandtears.

Itdidn’tendthere.Jamiesetoutonanunusualjourneywithherdiary—tohelpfutureparentsofchildrenwithDownsyndromeavoidtheanguishsheandMarkexperienced.AresidentofDetroit,shedecidedtoincludeotherparentswho’vewalkedintheirshoes,soshedecidedtoforwardthediarytothemsotheycouldtellintheirownwordstheirpersonaljourneywiththisspecialmemberoftheirfamily.Beforesendingitoff,Jamiewroteafewinstructionsforfutureauthors,encouragingthemtobehonestabouttheirexperiences,boththeupliftingandthechallengingaspectsofraisingachildwithDownsyndrome.NewsofthediarygotaroundthroughFacebookpostingsandwordofmouth.Thusbeganathree-yearjourneythatincludedvariouspointsthroughoutAmericaandCanada,witha inaltourintheUnitedKingdom,afterwhichitwillreturntoitsoriginalowner—21familiesinall.Thediary’s irststopwastoamotherinOntario,Canada.Oneofthe irstthingsafamilywoulddoisreadthepreviousposts.Withoutexceptiontheywereinspiredbywhattheyread,andmotivatedtosharetheirownstories—boththehighsandlows.Themotherofafour-year-oldstruggledtorecallthedif icultearlydaysbecauselifewasnowsuchajoy.Soinstead,shewroteaboutthehappinessandinspirationhersonbroughtto
