attheUniversityofMinnesotainMinneapolis.DougwasbornatGrissomAirForceBasein1964.HisfatherwasalsointheAirForce.Doug’sparentsplantedtheseedsoftheCatholicFaithinhimbysendinghimtoSt.ElizabethCatholicSchoolandChristtheKingCatholicHighSchoolinLubbock,Texas.HewentontoearnaBachelorofScienceDegreeinPsychologyfromSouthernIllinoisUniversityandaMasterofPublicEducationdegreefromTroyStateUniversityinTory,Alabama.Dougimpressesmenotonlybecauseofhisgreatrecordofleadershipandservice,butalsoforhisgiftsofcharacter,whichIthinkwillhelphimbeanexcellentPrincipal.Hecanseethebigpictureandthesmallestdetailsatthesametime.Hecanthinkbigandoutsidethebox,butalsobeveryfocusedonwhatisactuallygoingonandtheneedsofthemoment.Whenaskedabouthismanagementstyle,hedescribesitasparticipative…listeningandwatching,thendiscussing,lookingatwhatthemissionis,determininghowtogetfromAtoB,andthentryingtobringeveryonealong.Heisfriendly,empathetic,lexible,agoodlistener,self-con identandhumbleatthesametime,articulateandcheerful.Hereceivedverygoodlettersofrecommendation,whichstatedthat,amongotherthings,Douglikestoaskquestionstolearn,seekstounderstandothers’perspectives,ishard-working,kindandhelpful.Dougisarecentconvert,havingbeenreceivedintotheFullCommunionoftheCatholicChurchattheEasterVigilin2016.Hehasaconvert’szealfortheCatholicFaithand,asadiscipleofJesusChrist,hasadesiretoknow,growandserveevermore.Dougliveswithhiswifeandtwoteen-agesonsinWoodbury.Inhissparetimehelikestovolunteerinhisparish(theCathedralofSaintPaul)andtorunmarathons.Iamcon identthatDougwilldohisbest,withGod’shelpandyours,tobethebestPrincipalhecanbe,encouraging,mentoringandleadingtheschool’sfaculty,staffandstudents,andkeepingbusywiththezillionsofotherthingsthatprincipalsdo.IamgratefultoGodforsendingDougourway,andtoDougforsaying“yes.”Onavisittoourschoolacoupleofweeksago,Dougpickedupacopyoftheyearbook.Hetoldmethathewantstostartlearningthenamesofthestudents.That’soneindicationofhowmuchhecares.I’msurewewillallseemanymoreastimegoeson.GratefullyinChrist,FatherRudolph

Eachweekthe inancialstewardshipoftheparishispublishedinthebulletinunderbothContributionsandBuildingFund,thesearetheoperationalfundsusedtoruntheparishandschool(alongwithtuitionpayments).Ourincomehasconsistentlybeenlowerthanourbudgetinbothcategories.Justaswedowithourpersonal inances,wecannotspendmorethanwehaveavailableforoperationalexpenses.Forthisreason,alongwithcurtailingspendingasmuchasisreasonable,ithasbeennecessarytoeliminateandnothireforpositionsalongwithreductionofhoursandpay.Aspartofthisreductioninforce,lastweekwehadthesorrowofhavingtoeliminatethepositionofDirectorofFacilities.JimSmithhasdonemanywonderfulthingsheretohelpourparishinbuildingandmaintenanceprojects,bothsupervisingandhands-onworkhimself,aswellasgivinghelpfuladviceandsharinghismanyyearsofexperienceinthebuildingtrades.Hehasservedwithgrace,enthusiasm,loveforGodandHispeople,goodhumor,patience,wisdomandhumility.WewishJimthebestandthankhimforhisdedicationandconcernforSt.Raphael’s.
