WelcometoournewPrincipal!InthisSunday’sFirstReading,GodsaysthroughtheProphetIsaiahthatHiswordwilldoHiswill,achievingtheendforwhichhesentit.(Isaiah55:10-11)OnewaywepassonGod’swordisinourparishschool.WetrustthatwhatGodbeginsinthelivesofourstudentswillcontinuetobearfruitintheirlives.Atthesametime,whatkindoffruititbears,andhowlongthatfruitlasts,dependsonanumberofthings,aswehearinthisSunday’sGospel.JesuscomparesGod’sword—whichHecalls“thewordofthekingdom”—toseedthatafarmerplantsintheground.Somefallsonthepath;thatisthepersonwhohearsthewordwithoutunderstandingit,andtheevilonestealsawaywhathadbeensowninhisheart.Someseedissownonrockyground;thatistheonewhohearsthewordandreceivesitatoncewithjoy,butithasnoroot,andwhenpersecutionortribulationcomes,thepersonfallsaway.Someseedissownamongthorns;thatistheonewhohearstheword,butworldlyanxietyandthelureofricheschokestheword,whichthenbearsnofruit.Butsomeoftheseedissowninrichsoil;thisistheonewhohearsthewordandunderstandsit,andwhobearsabundantfruit.(Matthew13:1-9)Weprobablyknowpeoplewho—atleastfromourperspective—seemtobeineachofthosecategories.Maybeatdifferentpointsinourownliveswe’vebeentheretoo.ThewordofGodplantedinrichsoilisevidentinthelifeofthenewPrincipalofSt.RaphaelSchool,whose irstof icialdayonthejobwillbethisMonday,July17th.PleasejoinmeinwelcomingDouglasBallingertoourschoolandparishcommunity!DougwasemployeduntilthispastFridayastheDirectorofCommunityEngagementandAssistantDeanofStudentsatSt.PaulCitySchool,acharterschoolinSt.Paul.Heisnearcompletion(August2017)ofhisK-12PrincipalLicensureclassesattheUniversityofMinnesotaandhasdoneinternshipsatWashburnHighSchoolinMinneapolisandSt.ThomasAcademyinMendotaHeights.Dougretiredin2009fromtheAirForceafter20yearsofservicethere,withtherankofLieutenantColonel.HehasadistinguishedhistoryofleadershipintheAirForce,overseeingsecurityandlawenforcementforanumberofoperations,eventsandinstallationsinJapan,theMiddleEastandtheUSA.HealsohadaleadershipandteachingroleinAFROTC

attheUniversityofMinnesotainMinneapolis.DougwasbornatGrissomAirForceBasein1964.HisfatherwasalsointheAirForce.Doug’sparentsplantedtheseedsoftheCatholicFaithinhimbysendinghimtoSt.ElizabethCatholicSchoolandChristtheKingCatholicHighSchoolinLubbock,Texas.HewentontoearnaBachelorofScienceDegreeinPsychologyfromSouthernIllinoisUniversityandaMasterofPublicEducationdegreefromTroyStateUniversityinTory,Alabama.Dougimpressesmenotonlybecauseofhisgreatrecordofleadershipandservice,butalsoforhisgiftsofcharacter,whichIthinkwillhelphimbeanexcellentPrincipal.Hecanseethebigpictureandthesmallestdetailsatthesametime.Hecanthinkbigandoutsidethebox,butalsobeveryfocusedonwhatisactuallygoingonandtheneedsofthemoment.Whenaskedabouthismanagementstyle,hedescribesitasparticipative…listeningandwatching,thendiscussing,lookingatwhatthemissionis,determininghowtogetfromAtoB,andthentryingtobringeveryonealong.Heisfriendly,empathetic,lexible,agoodlistener,self-con identandhumbleatthesametime,articulateandcheerful.Hereceivedverygoodlettersofrecommendation,whichstatedthat,amongotherthings,Douglikestoaskquestionstolearn,seekstounderstandothers’perspectives,ishard-working,kindandhelpful.Dougisarecentconvert,havingbeenreceivedintotheFullCommunionoftheCatholicChurchattheEasterVigilin2016.Hehasaconvert’szealfortheCatholicFaithand,asadiscipleofJesusChrist,hasadesiretoknow,growandserveevermore.Dougliveswithhiswifeandtwoteen-agesonsinWoodbury.Inhissparetimehelikestovolunteerinhisparish(theCathedralofSaintPaul)andtorunmarathons.Iamcon identthatDougwilldohisbest,withGod’shelpandyours,tobethebestPrincipalhecanbe,encouraging,mentoringandleadingtheschool’sfaculty,staffandstudents,andkeepingbusywiththezillionsofotherthingsthatprincipalsdo.IamgratefultoGodforsendingDougourway,andtoDougforsaying“yes.”Onavisittoourschoolacoupleofweeksago,Dougpickedupacopyoftheyearbook.Hetoldmethathewantstostartlearningthenamesofthestudents.That’soneindicationofhowmuchhecares.I’msurewewillallseemanymoreastimegoeson.GratefullyinChrist,FatherRudolph

Thesewereagroupofsevenmenand ivewomenwhocamefromthetownofScillium,inwhatisthenowthecountryofTunisia,inNorthAfrica.TheirnameswereSperatus,Aquilinus,Cittinus,Donata,Felix,Generosa,Januaria,Laetantius,Nartzalus,Secunda,VestiaandVeturius.Theyweremartyredintheyear180,duringapersecutionofChristiansthatwasstartedbytheRomanEmperorMarcusAurelius.WhentheywerearrestedtheyweretakentothecityofCarthageforexaminationbytheproconsulthere.HeofferedtopardonthemiftheywouldworshiptheRomangodsandswearbythedivinespiritoftheemperor.Speratusreplied,“Idonotrecognizetheempireofthisworld.Rather,IserveGodwhomnomanhasseen,norcanseewiththeseeyes.Ihavenotstolen,andonanypurchaseIpaythetax,forIacknowledgemylordwhoisemperorofkingsandofnations.”Theproconsulaskediftheyneededtimetothinkitover.Speratus,speakingforthegroup,said,“Insojustamatterthereisnoneedfordeliberation.”TheyallstressedtheirloyaltytoCaesar,butthattheiroverridingdutywastoobeyandserveGod.Theproconsulsentencedthemtodeath,statingthattheywerebeingcondemnedfor“havingacknowledgedthemselvesasChristiansandhavingrefusedanopportunityofreturningtotheRomancustoms.”Theywereexecutedbybeingbeheaded,whichmeantthattheywereprobablyRomancitizens.SaintSperatusandCompanions,prayforus! Eachweekthe inancialstewardshipoftheparishispublishedinthebulletinunderbothContributionsandBuildingFund,thesearetheoperationalfundsusedtoruntheparishandschool(alongwithtuitionpayments).Ourincomehasconsistentlybeenlowerthanourbudgetinbothcategories.Justaswedowithourpersonal inances,wecannotspendmorethanwehaveavailableforoperationalexpenses.Forthisreason,alongwithcurtailingspendingasmuchasisreasonable,ithasbeennecessarytoeliminateandnothireforpositionsalongwithreductionofhoursandpay.Aspartofthisreductioninforce,lastweekwehadthesorrowofhavingtoeliminatethepositionofDirectorofFacilities.JimSmithhasdonemanywonderfulthingsheretohelpourparishinbuildingandmaintenanceprojects,bothsupervisingandhands-onworkhimself,aswellasgivinghelpfuladviceandsharinghismanyyearsofexperienceinthebuildingtrades.Hehasservedwithgrace,enthusiasm,loveforGodandHispeople,goodhumor,patience,wisdomandhumility.WewishJimthebestandthankhimforhisdedicationandconcernforSt.Raphael’s.
