The Origin of the Sacred Heart Feast

The Sacred Heart Church is the same as ‘The Divine Love Church.’ As they say, the heart is the center and wellspring of our emotional lives and love. Thus, the Sacred Heart stands for Jesus’ love. And throughout the writing of the Church Fathers, we see numerous references to the loving heart of Jesus. However, actual devotions to the heart of Jesus could be traced back to St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Bonaventure, and St. Gertrude the Great in the Middle Ages. These devotions continued until the 17th century when a Benedictine monk, St. John Eudes composed the liturgical prayers for the Sacred Heart Mass and Divine Office. During that same period, in 1675, Jesus granted St. Margret Mary Alacoque, who had a special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, a series of visions of Himself. She wrote, "He disclosed to me the marvels of his Love and the inexplicable secrets of His Sacred Heart." These were all happening the wake of the seventeenth century Calvinism and Jansenism that taught a distorted doctrine that substituted for God's love and sacrifice of His Son for all men the fearful idea that a whole section of humanity was inexorably damned. Throughout the history of the Church, God has always intervened in times of confusion to elucidate the truth of His revelations and the depth of His love. In 1865, Pope Pius IX officially established the Feast of the Sacred Heart as obligatory for the whole Church to be celebrated on Friday, after the Octave of Corpus Christi. Subsequently, Pope Leo XIII (June 1889) and Pope Pius XI raised the Feast to a solemnity. In continuation of the revelation of His ineffable love, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina Kowalska in 1938 and said,

“I have opened my Heart as a living source of Mercy, from it all souls draw life, all approach with deep confidence this sea of Mercy. Sinners will obtain justification and the just will be strengthened in goodness. I will fill the souls of those who put their trust in My Mercy with My divine peace at the hour of their death.

Our church is a Divine Love church. Let us embrace the love of Christ. Let us spread that love within and outside our community. And as our mission statement says, let us endeavor to “offer every person in our community a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ.” “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.”

1. Special thanks and recognition to our FIRST COMMUNION CHILDREN who participated in the CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION last Sunday: Christian and Juliet Morales, Ethan Ruiz, Francisco Dominguez, Jacob and Sabrina McQueary, Mariana Gonzalez, Lillybeth Rivera, Natalie Martinez, Mariela Buenrostro, Dahlila Guajardo and Kamila Chavarria.

2. We are deeply grateful to all our volunteers this year. Their contribution to the faith formation of children in our parish has been invaluable. Volunteers are truly the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. Special thanks to our SUNDAY 10:30AM VOLUNTEERS: Kathy McKean, Wendy Chatto, Olga Diaz, Andrea Garcia, Gabriella Gobuyan, Cecilia Daniels, Adriana Dominguez, Shai Daniels, Dennise Dominguez, Julie Perez, Rosita Reyes, Yuliana Rivera, Jennette Bristol, Ria Sim, Nikolas Ramirez, Mattheus Ramirez, Charlene Pettit, Mike Pettit, Brenda Garcia, Bambie Poindexter, Sylvia Nevarez, Maria Casteneda, Xitlaly Mejia, Laura Moreno, Divine Doria, Michelle Aragon, Miranda Acuna.

3. Confirmation registration forms have been mailed out to families of youth entering 9th grade.

4. REGISTRATION for FIRST COMMUNION classes has already begun. We hope many parents sign their children up early before the busy vacation comes. Registration forms are bulldog-clipped to the religious education office door and online at sacredheartventura.org/faith formation/religious education.

5. HOW TO TAKE YOUNG CHILDREN TO MASS:

a. Make sure children are well-fed right before Mass.

b. Beginning even with the smallest infants, dress them in some special clothing that they will only wear to church or special events.

c. Check the diaper bag to make sure it is well stocked. Include a toy your child sees only on Sunday at Mass.

d. Visit the bathroom right before leaving home.

e. Read the readings in the car on the way to church.

f. Remind the children that it is their job to sit quiet/still, participate by sharing their voices and to pray. Their job is also not to distract those around them from praying.

g. At Mass, sit up front. If a child makes continual noise, calmly step out of the main assembly until they have calmed down. Return to the pew as soon as possible.

h. After Mass, praise the children for good behavior, give pointers for improvement, answer questions the children may have, take time to discuss the readings and homily.

Did you know that June 21--the first day of summer--is National eGiving Day?

Sacred Heart can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to eGiving in our church has been wonderful.

To build on this success, I am challenging you to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and set up an eGiving account with Faith Direct today. eGiving is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and Sacred Heart does not receive their envelopes. It’s easy for people to forget to catch up once they’re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result – making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries.

The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National eGiving Day Challenge, the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month – and this will help us do even more to spread Christ’s love throughout the community.

Being part of this challenge is simple. Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: CA856.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure!

God Bless You, Rev.
