The Hope Community Church Club 56 ran one of their last after-school groups. Grade Five and Six students from around the community are wel-come to take part in the after-school activities. “If they find fun friends now, maybe they won’t make bad choices later,” said Roger Gilbert, a member of the church. The church owns the bouncy castle they had set up. The pro-gram will be ending soon for the summer and will start up again in the fall. The kids nearly toppled the castle as they all climbed in to jump around.

received Third Reading on June 2. Resi-dents will be able to hand water their shrubs, plants, etc. anytime, but lawn watering will be restricted to three days a week.

“Since we’re using Calgary water, I think we should be on the same water-ing schedule, which is 7 days a week.,” said Councillor Mike Lloyd.

“In my opinion, we need to be con-scious of water conservation,” said Coun-cilor Earl Best. All members of council, apart from Councillor Lloyd, voted in fa-vour of the Bylaw.

Bid AcceptedThe caretaking tender bids for the

Town facilities were presented to Coun-cil. The contract includes caretaking for the Civic Centre, the Family Centre, Town Hall, Kinsmen Park washrooms and other Town owned facilities, which are accessible to all members of the community. Councillor Lois Wegener requested an evaluation of the services to be conducted monthly, and a perfor-mance report to be submitted after six months.

“We need feedback from the people who are actually receiving these ser-vices,” said Wegener. Nine bids were received with three bids being close in cost. White Corner Professional Cleaning Incorporated was awarded the contract, based on the nature of the contract, which requires the successful bidder to be available at a moment’s notice for any unforeseen occurrences.

UFA Co-operative Limited brings back

Farmers’ DayBack when Alberta was a young province, people migrated here from around the world to stake their claim to a piece of land and the hope of a bright future. Over 100 years later, their hard work is reflected by the province’s prosper-ity, history and culture.

In the past, we used to honor the frontier spirit and contribution of Alberta’s farmers each year on the second Friday of June—Farm-ers’ Day. As a way to say thanks, UFA decided to revive this special holiday and invite farmers and their families to come out on June 11 and enjoy a day of old fashioned food, fun and prizes.

“UFA understands how important agriculture is to our communities and to our business,” says Bob Nel-son, UFA president and CEO. “We think showing our appreciation for ag producers with some food, fun and prizes is the least we can do to thank them.”

As part of the festivities, UFA will have a draw for a brand new John Deere Gator XUV 620i as well as draws for other prizes at each of its Farm stores and agencies. UFA will also announce a contest to win a Paul Brandt concert in your home town.

Take Advantage of Today’s Financial Markets

to Invest for TomorrowFinancial markets are frequently volatile and

usually unpredictable - but that doesn’t mean you can’t find good opportunities today to invest for tomorrow. How? Consider these ideas:

First, look beyond short-term market fluctuations. When you look back at many short-term price drops, you see that they occurred in the context of a longer-term bull market. If you can develop the discipline to overlook day-to-day price changes, your patience can be rewarded.

It’s also a good idea to own a mix of investments that’s suitable for your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. By purchasing an array of domestic and international stocks, bonds, mutual funds and guaranteed investment certificates, and by holding these investments for the long term, you can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio.

Here’s one more tip: Contribute regularly to your RRSP and other investment accounts, even in down markets. During downturns, your investment dollars go further and purchase more shares, putting you in a position for bigger gains when the market turns around.

You can’t predict the financial markets. But by following these suggestions, you can help yourself avoid unpleasant surprises - and you may achieve surprisingly pleasant results.

Junior High on June 4. The students were given a tour of the school and what it has to offer. There was a BBQ with hamburgers, hotdogs and juice served to all of the kids. POD coordinator for the Grade 7 students Colin Lenox manned the BBQ with the help of Scott Koller. “We want to show the Grade 6’s what it’s about and that it’s not just the big, bad, scary place down the street,” said Lenox. Sacred Heart Academy, SHA, received a donation which will enhance the learn-ing methods of children for years to come. Two Smart Table Interactive Learn-ing Centres were donated to the school by Cattleland Feedyards owners Greg and Candace Appleyard. Both of the Ap-pleyards had been students at the school when it was Samuel Crowther, and their twins now go to SHA.

The tables are made by Smart Tech-nologies and are designed for use in pri-

mary classrooms. They are an interactive way for students to learn through dif-ferent activities, and they can all be ma-nipulated at the touch of a finger. SHA currently has 13 smart boards, which are similar to the tables, but are projected onto a screen.

“A lot of classrooms now are using smart boards, and it’s the same thing, the teacher can upload things, they are like an interactive board,” said Lauren Zulyn-iak, a teacher at SHA.

Cattleland Feedyards had been look-ing for a way to help the school, so the Appleyards phoned to ask how they could contribute. “We have been very impressed with the school and so it’s a way to contribute something back to the continued growth of the school,”” said Greg. The school had already been look-ing into purchasing a smart table and so Cattleland Feedyards donated the $1,600

needed. There is only one other school in Alberta right now also using the ta-bles, and it is in Calgary.

The school and the Appleyards had discussed ordering them in February and the tables arrived in April. The tables can be used by as few as one person at a time and up to four. When there are four, all of the kids must agree to exit a certain program before it will move on.

“They are also portable which is very nice, you can just roll them into another room,” said Zulyniak. Because the tables are still so new, both the students and teachers are learning more about them on a daily basis. All of the activity pro-grams are on a jump drive. To download new activities, teachers only need to go to the smart website where it doesn’t cost anything for the new programs. The jump drives are also interchangeable be-tween the smart boards and tables.

Girls preened in their dresses and the boys looked sharp in their tuxes as the Strathmore High School, SHS, graduating class of 2010 gathered together for a big group photo. There were 217 grads to walk across the stage this year, the most grads in SHS history. The ceremonies began at 1 p.m., with a break in the afternoon to run home and change, and the evening ceremonies started at 8 p.m. with the grand march at 9 p.m. The banquet sold over 730 tickets and it was clear that hours upon hours of work went into transforming the Family Centre. To the EditorOn May 31 2010, the citizen of the Town of Strath-

more got a surprise - those ones who own a trailer and had it parked on their own property (driveway), were given a 72 hour by the town Bylaw to move it to their back yards or else where.

Unfortunately I was one of those citizens, so I tried to disputed as best of my knowledge, but did not get any results from the bylaw officer. It was explain to me that my drive way is my front yard and accord-ing to the bylaw, which is under traffic bylaw, is a hazard to traffic (which traffic?) and unsightly to my neighborhood (it’s clean and only is three years old) and a public hazard (it is not on any body’s property but my own).

It has been five years since I move to the Town of Strathmore and this is the first time ever that I was told to move my trailer out of my property (driveway).

I understand if my trailer was on my driveway all year long, but only is on the driveway during camp-ing season.

What is the Town trying to do? Trying to make us move to another municipality, when they promoting

the town to be a great town to raise families? There are individuals that have their unlicensed

vehicles on their driveways and nothing has been done to them. There are homes under constructions for more than a year, so where can we draw the line when it comes to being fair and how to apply bylaws?

It’s pretty sad that we pay property taxes and we are told what to do in our own property.

I encourage those individuals to come together and meet with town council or/and sign a petition to the town to see if we can solve this problem in a courtesy way.

I also was told that if I did not want to move my trailer to just wait for the ticket and ask the judge to explain it to me when clearly states that is a traffic bylaw and not a property law. Come on, do we really want to keep spending our taxpayer money?

Come on everyone and try to solve this matter as a town and not alone. Talk to your neighbors - get this ball rolling and maybe together we can make a difference.

New by-law sparks debateLetters to the editor

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

By the time you are reading this, I will be returning home from one week in Afghanistan. As the Chair of the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan, I have been work-ing for the past few weeks prepar-ing our committee’s travel to wit-ness first-hand what we have been studying.

As the former Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Internation-al Development, I spent consider-able time presiding over meetings on Canada’s Mission in Afghani-stan, and I signed and tabled that Committee’s Report to the House. The Special Committee was created shortly thereafter.

Canada’s military mission will end by June 2011. The comple-tion date for our efforts in this re-gard was established by a Motion passed in the House of Commons in 2008. Our Special Committee wants to be of assistance in prepar-ing for this end date, and studying the aftermath.

The Special Committee has never travelled to Afghanistan since its formation in the Spring of 2008.

Yet, this committee has conducted hearings into numerous issues that have arisen during the mission ranging from Afghan governmental development and legislative issues to the continued emancipation struggle of women. Canadians have benefitted from the information and evidence brought forward and shared vis-a-vis our committee’s hearings and reports.

Many nations are working to-gether in Afghanistan to try and raise that nation to a point where it can function on its own. Since 2002, much progress has been made and there are many successes. There is a great deal more to be done and there are limits on what the Inter-national community can contrib-ute. At some point Afghanistan will have to take advantage of the help it has received and go forward with increasing autonomy. The nations working there have tried their best to leave Afghanistan with a strong military, police services, a legal system, educational facilities, and numerous other features that will help Afghanistan society function.

Most of all, the ‘job’ that need-ed to be done in Afghanistan was fighting terrorism. Afghanistan’s progress as a nation was stifled by the persecution of numerous groups of people in that land and

the dictatorial and violent control over it. Once the violence spread to the West in 2001, the world re-sponded by going to Afghanistan and helping its citizens deal with the roots of the problems. This was done at the United Nations’ invita-tion as well as the new Afghanistan government.

Just prior to leaving for Afghani-stan I delivered a Members’ State-ment in the House saluting our troops for their efforts under the constant dangers they face in that nation. I also assisted Defence Min-ister Peter Mackay by speaking in the lengthy late night debate in the House that dealt with the Depart-ment’s budgetary estimates. I am looking forward to meeting many of the 2,800 Canadians who are performing the difficult ‘hands-on’ work of Canada’s Mission in Af-ghanistan. I will shake their hands and thank them for their self-less and seemingly tireless efforts on our behalf. I will assure them of our prayers for God’s protection and mercy.

Students Against Drunk Driving, SADD, had a variety of things going on at Strath-more High School, SHS, over the week of May 31 to June 4.

SADD members and their coordinator Amy Dzus wanted to raise awareness about the risks of drinking and driving, especially with grad coming up.

“This year we decided to do a whole week of grad activi-ties instead of just one thing,” said Dzus.

SADD has been run at the school for a number of years, and Dzus has been in charge for three of them. There is a SADD Alberta website where members can bounce ideas off of each other, but it is up to each school to decide what they will do.

On May 31 at SHS, there were suckers being handed out with a tag on them which read ‘don’t be a sucker, don’t

drink and drive.’ After school on Monday night, the SADD members put masking tape outlines of dead bodies around the school. The outlines had drunk driving statistics in them, so when students came to school Tuesday it was one of the first things they saw.

Const. Ric Gill, with the Strathmore RCMP went to Cal-gary on Tuesday and picked up the roll over simulator.

The rollover simulator is the cut off front half of a pickup truck, attached to a big trailer. There are no windows in it, and there were three mana-quins inside, one with a seat-belt on, two without.

“Basically what it does is simulate being in a collision at different speeds, with and without your seatbelt, it’s to show people what it’s about and why they should wear their seatbelt,” said Gill.

“This is one thing you don’t want to miss. It really hits home what happens when you’re drunk and driving,”

said SHS student Brittany An-derson.

“Even at a slow speed the two keep falling out.”

There were also six sets of impairment goggles, which belong to the Strathmore RCMP detachment, brought to SHS to show the kids the dif-ferent levels of impairment. Each pair of goggle simulate a different level of Blood Alco-hol Content, BCA, which gives the feeling of being drunk.

“They show you how dizzy you can get, and your depth perception,” said Gill. Students lined up to try on the goggles and walk the straight line, which was taped to the side-walk.

“The higher the BCA, the more drunk you feel, you get a headache and get really dizzy,” said Anderson.

Thursday was the whiteout. Students came to school with their faces painted white, and met Dzus before class for a sign stating they were killed by a drunk driver. This was the

first time a whiteout had been done in a few years.

“The way a SADD white-out normally runs is, every 13 minutes I think it is, someone comes in and grabs a student out of class and paints their face white to represent that every so many minutes in Al-berta somebody gets killed by drinking and driving,” said Dzus. This was found to be too disruptive to the class-rooms, and so this year stu-dents were given signs and took a sort of vow of silence to recognize the people killed by drunk drivers. Throughout the week there was also a raf-fle being hosted, tickets sold for 1 for $2 or 3 for $5, and the prize was a 16g IPod. Dar-lene Reynolds, a member of the main office staff, won the IPod. SADD raised $137 with the IPod raffle and, together with the money raised from the Wake-a-thon hosted earlier this year, are donating $300 to the Alberta Adolescent Recov-ery Center (AARC) in Calgary.

Testicular cancer is not something many, if any, teen-age boys like to think about. For Chad Munroe it is something he has had to deal with twice in the past seven years. When he was 20-years-old he was first di-agnosed with tes-ticular cancer, and in August 2009 it came back with a vengeance.

“It just hap-pened so fast that it was almost like it hadn’t happened. I did two years of re-mission and all the results were good. I had a one in a million chance of getting that same cancer again and then seven years later it came back,” said Munroe.

“You think of cancer and you think it’s an old persons thing, and its not.

“Before I use to think cancer, that’s what old people get, but not any-more. Anyone can get it,” said Chris Wainwright, who has been Munroe’s best friend since they were 14.

Munroe was suf-fering from swell-ing and pain and left it for a while before going to get checked out. Be-cause he had left it for so long, he was fast tracked through surgery. This time he was having lung pain and thought he might have pneu-monia and found out instead the

cancer had come back.

For a number of years the friends had been thinking about doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer, but some-thing always came up and they have never done it. This year the two are determined to do the ride, which takes place June 26-27. Their team name is SKYSUN-LIMITED and they are hoping to raise $5,000 towards cancer research.

“Up until about a month ago we didn’t think he would be here next week,” said Wainwright.

“Some days are just so crazy thinking about everything and then I look at my own kid and don’t know how I would get through it. I’m not the same per-son now that I was a year or two ago, I definitely appreci-ate the little things more.”

When the can-cer came back this time it had spread to Mun-roe’s abdomen, lymph nodes and to his lungs. The doctors told him the tumors in his lungs were too nu-merous to count. He went through four months of chemo and it wasn’t working so 10 weeks ago he went for surgery. They took out his lymph nodes and the tumors in his stomach, which after testing were found to be be-nign.

“There were

no future plans, I was living just for today, there were times I was just liv-ing for that hour,” said Munroe. Every six weeks he is go-ing for surveillance and after that it will be cut down to ev-ery three months. Right now Mun-roe is considered a high risk because there are still two spots on his lungs and if they grow even one millime-ter he will have to go for double lung surgery. He re-cently has received good results back and is hoping they stay that way.

Both Munroe and Wainwright have begun train-

ing for the ride, which starts in Spruce Meadows, goes through the Rockies and ends up back at Spruce Meadows.

“Last year they raised $7M and I want to be a part of it, even if we’re a speck of sand on that beach I want to be a part of it,” said Munroe.

“I’m really grate-ful to have some-one like Chris to go with.” He is positive that once they are among the 17,000 other riders they will be able to do it. The two have also been running bottle drives, where they go door to door

asking people to donate their bot-tles towards their cause.

“I think people are generally more willing to give up their bottles than give money, or give out their cred-it card numbers. I think it looks bet-ter to be out there putting out the effort, instead of just sitting around looking for dona-tions,” said Wain-wright.

“It really doesn’t matter how much money is raised, it would be nice, but it’s more about awareness, and people seeing what’s going on. A dollar, a quarter,

it all adds up and makes a differ-ence,” said Mun-roe. Next year they would like to start their own trek and go 5k or 10k and eventually maybe work their way across Canada.

“There’s no stop-ping, this is just the beginning to our journey and I really believe that,” said Munroe.

Munroe is also

planning to start going to schools to speak about his battle. He remem-bers when he was 17, and knows it will hit home more coming from a younger guy than somebody older.

“If I could just go to someplace and give just one kid, one person, one elder some ex-perience and hope that they are go-

ing to be ok, that I made it through and maybe they can too, that’s all that matters.” To donate and help the Cancer Soci-ety people can go to www.conquer-cancer.ca and en-ter either Chad or Chris’s name. A re-ceipt is sent right to your email and all of the proceeds will be going to the Cancer Society.

After three years of persistence Curtis Reid finally got his wish. Reid, a Strathmore High School drama student, had bugged his drama instructor Paula Richard-son about putting on a produc-tion of the popular ‘80s movie The Breakfast Club’.

“I said no cause I though it was just a little too edgy. He asked me again last year, in Grade 11, I said no again. In Grade 12 he bugged me again, he never relented and I said ok I will talk to my princi-pal, and my principal said ‘yeah ok if you soften it a little here and there, go for it’,” said Richardson.

There have been changes made to the script to make it more ap-propriate. Richardson said the kids were full of suggestions and input as to how things could be changed a little, but still keep it close to the original script. Things like the case of beer were changed to Gatorade and a lot of the heavy swearing was taken out.

Even though it’s a hit from the ‘80s there is still something the

kids can relate to in the charac-ters.

“They have been really dedi-cated on this show because they absolutely love the characters. It’s the same conundrums, its still the same peer pressure, the same parents don’t understand, its all the same issues,” said Richardson.

“One of the hardest things with this show was because it changes locations so much and they travel so far around the school and we cant do that here so we’ve had to shrink things a little and try to utilize our space a little more.”

This was the last big produc-tion for the year being done by the senior drama club students. The students who were cast in roles still had to audition, and the lights and scenery were taken care of by other students also in the club. The show ran from May 29 to June 2. Not as many tick-ets were sold as hoped for, but there were still about 30 to 40 people in the audience the first four showings, and it jumped up to between 50 and 75 for the last two. On the final night of the show, the actors received a stand-ing ovation from the crowd.

The Expressions of Dance Studio has 15 danc-ers competing in 14 routines in the Great Canadian Dance Challenge in Kelowna B.C.

The challenge will be taking place from July 8 to 11, and it is similar to going to nationals. The quali-fying round was held in Lethbridge from April 21 to 25. There were 24 routines which qualified from Strathmore.

“The Lethbridge qualifying round had very high standards, the adjudicators are from L.A.,” said Anne Leeper, whose daughter will be competing in two routines.

Due to extra costs and summer vacations, some of the competitors won’t be able to make it.

“There were so many routines that qualified, that some people just couldn’t afford that extra expense to go to Kelowna. It depends how many teams are involved in it and how many days they are compet-ing in,” said Heather Thomas, owner of Expressions of Dance Studio.

“I think they are very excited, along with a little bit nervous. It’s exciting but it’s going to be a lot of hard work,” said Thomas. The youngest competitor is four and the oldest one is an adult said Thomas.

The regular season for dancers is generally from September to June, and competitive dancers will practice up to five times a week. The routines are

everything from character ballet, to theatre to mod-ern to jazz to tap dance. Most of the competitive kids study different styles of dance.

As a way to help subsidize some of the costs for those who are still going to the competition, some of the parents are holding a fundraising BBQ at M&M Meats on June 26. The BBQ will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a table with awards the dancers have won, and some of the girls will be there helping.

The community of Standard held their first big antique sale and auction on June 5. The viewing for the auction was on the fourth for people to get an idea of what they would like to bid on. The auction started at 10 a.m., and all the proceeds raised are going to the Standard Community Hall Association, to build their new hall.

“We got a lot of good stuff,” said Brett Gates, who was in charge of organizing the auction.

It was held in the Standard/Rosebud arena, in Standard. Donations were accepted for the two months leading up to it. Companies and individu-als from in and around Standard donated a wide variety of items.

“We received lovely things for the auction, things

such as lawn mowers, trucks, collectibles, treasures, antiques, china, art, furniture, I could go on forever listing it all off,” said Donna Sanden Nelson whose team was gathering up the collectibles.

Due to a lack of government grants, the town of Standard will be holding fundraisers to help cover the cost of the new hall.

The piece of land has already been purchased, but Sanden Nelson said she doesn’t think construc-tion will begin for another year.

Gates had been hoping the auction would raise around $20,000 and would hopefully sell out. It did sell out and it surpassed his expectations raising nearly $40,000.

“It was really good, it started slow but it ended good,” said Gates. This was one of the first major fundraisers for the hall. On July 23 there will be a fundraising golf tournament in Bassano.

Since May 14 Walmart has been selling paper balloons for a minimum of $1 to raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The store will con-tinue fundraising until the end of the week, and the Walmart head corporation will match dollar for dollar the amount raised. The store had a goal of $64,000 and have already surpassed that and brought in $67,000.

“It’s pretty amazing the community support we get. We’re always number one in our district be-cause of the community,” said store manager Gerry Montgomery. The money raised has come from do-nations made by the community and some of the

suppliers. Montgomery said this is probably the store’s number one charity, because the money goes back into the community. He can’t think of one per-son who hasn’t needed the Children’s Hospital at one time or another. The annual Walmart Walk for Miracles is also coming up on June 13, and will be taking place at Pumphouse Park in Calgary.

shannon leclairTimes Reporter

The sixth annual Relay for Life will be taking place at the curl-ing rink and agricultural grounds on June 11. The Relay is a 12-hour event, which takes place over night, and participants either walk, run, jog, or wheel to show their support and to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year Angela Boyd is the event chair. She has been involved in different ways with the Relay for a number of years.

“When I first got involved I was a team captain and then moved on into the committee. This year I ad-vanced my role by taking on the event chair role,” said Boyd. The survivor reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by the Cel-ebrate ceremony.

There are three major ceremo-nies held throughout the relay. The first is the Celebrate Ceremony, where the lives of those who have

battled cancer are celebrated, and the survivors join together for a victory lap. The second ceremony, the Remember Ceremony, is where loved ones who lost their battle are remembered. There are lumi-naries, which are lit at dusk and stay lit to provide motivation and inspiration to the participants. The third ceremony is the Fight Back Ceremony.

“It’s an opportunity for each par-ticipant to make a personal contri-bution to take action and make a commitment to fight back against cancer for the remainder of the night and for the rest of our lives,” said Boyd.

Boyd is also a team captain again this year and will be participating with her team in the relay. At 8:30 p.m. there will be a head shave, which will be followed by the Re-member Ceremony at 10 p.m.

In the past few years the Relay has been seeing the numbers go down, but Boyd is excited about the new teams who have signed

up this year, and the dedicated re-turning ones, and thinks it will be a decent turnout.

“If people want to take part, they are encouraged to come down, check out the entertainment, take part in our ceremonies. For a small fee of $5 they can join us in our meals, and maybe see if they want to be a bigger part of the Relay for Life next year,” said Boyd.

There will be a dinner served, a midnight snack, and breakfast in the morning. There will also be entertainment for everyone to help keep people going throughout the night. The Keister Family Fiddlers will be there, Matrix Cheer, Zaida Bahir School of Belly Dancers, face painting, and even bouncy houses for the kids.

Participants should bring with them weather-appropriate cloth-ing, camping chairs and other items that might be needed dur-ing the night. Go cups are rec-ommended to help reduce the amount of waste.

Spartans win bronze at zone finalsShannon LeCLairTimes Reporter

The South Central Zone Boys Soccer Champion-ship took place on June 2, in Strathmore. The games started at 9 a.m. and the finals were held at 4:30 p.m. Strathmore High School, SHS, field, and Park-wood soccer field were tied up for the day to host the games. For their first game of the day the Spar-tans played against Three Hills, beating them 3–0. The boys had a chance to rest up for their next game which took place against the Canmore Crusaders at 12:30 p.m. It was a close game, staying at a tie until Canmore managed to score the winning point, beat-ing Strathmore 2–1.

“I think the teams have been happy with the play. It was a tough tournament for all the teams involved because they were playing back-to-back games,” said assistant coach Wes Clark.

The semifinals saw the Spartans against Okotoks’ Foothill Composite High School, FCHS, at the SHS field and Canmore challenged Chestermere at the Parkwood field. The Spartans lost their third game of the day 2 -0, which qualified them for the bronze medal game. Canmore beat Chestermere 2-1 in their semifinal game. The Chestermere team faced off against the Spartans. Chestermere went into the tournament undefeated all year in their league and the Spartans took that away from them, winning the bronze medal finals with a score of 5-1. Derek War-

rack scored three of the five goals and the teams were evenly matched up. All of the games were fairly close.

“The kids from all the teams and the coaches showed good sportsmanship. The teams played hard, and were competitive but not at the expense of their opponent,” said Clark. The Spartans had never played Chestermere before and it was good for the team to meet new opponents. FCHS faced Canmore in the gold medal game, which was sort of a re-match for the two teams. In their league finals game FCHS beat Canmore in a shoot-out, and this time Canmore won the game 1-0.

The Spartans still have their league finals coming up on June 9 in Okotoks.

The Elite Hockey Devel-opment Camp will be taking place again this year. This will be the third year for the camp, which has been run by Doug Raycroft since Pro Ice discontinued their hock-ey school in Strathmore.

“This is its third year in Strathmore, we run spring camps and a one week camp in August at the fam-ily centre,” said Raycroft.

The spring camp start on June 15 and run every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., un-til the end of July. There are normally about 50 kids

who sign up for the spring camp and about 100 to 125 for the weeklong camp in August.

“It’s generally Atom and PeeWee players mostly and it’s usually anywhere from eight-years-old up to 13-year-olds. A couple of the older ones we let in and even a couple of the young-

er,” said Raycroft. People can sign up for

the camps right up until the day before they begin. The camp starting on June 15 is $335 plus GST and for the August session it is $350. The weeklong August camp is a full day camp and it goes from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Submitted by Kathie Zakresky, organizer

On May 20 the 14th Festival of Music again proved to be a successful annual

event and was enjoyed by all who attended. The entrants on the program numbered

32, involving 45 performers, with nine music teachers being represented.

The enthusiastic performances of the talented musicians indicated that the art of music is alive and flourishing in our community!

Among the many young talented performers, Metaya Anderson (8) performed her own composition, Kallista, on the piano. As a student of Valerie Matheson with the Music for Young Children program (MYC), she had entered a competition which entailed composing her own piece of music requiring particular musical components. Out of over 900 contestants across Canada, she was awarded an honorary mention for her work! Congratulations, Metaya!

The stage was also shared by more advanced musicians, with Dean White illustrating both the Bb soprano and the Eb alto Clarinets, Kevin Desjardin ballad composer/guitarist, Lyndsay Goebel voice, Kelly Zeeb (Langdon) playing her own composition on piano, Hetty Jagersma & Lorilee Laycock piano duet, and the Stairwell Singers (friends from Chinook School of Music) filling the room with their toe-tapping intricate harmonies!

The program was highlighted with Felity Kwok on the piano, Hong Kong exchange student studying ARCT, ie., Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (Music) program with Carolyn Steeves, and, to the delightful amazement of everyone present, Timothy Steeves, home for the summer from The University of Michigan School of Music, displaying his talent on his violin with virtuosic style!

The roots of the Festival of Music stem back to the musical contributions of Mrs. Mary Mercer (1906-2009), who kept music in the air in our community for over 40 years as a music teacher. Mary also loved to play at the F of M, and shared her gift at the piano even in her 100th year, playing duets with her daughter, Lynne (or me, from time to time!). She always had encouraging words of wisdom to share with the students at the program!

On behalf of the Festival of Music, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the program, the parents and teachers who encourage music in the lives of their children, the United Church who allowed us their facility for so many years at no cost, the Alliance Church for use of their facility, local papers for free advertising, Bea Dolphin for help with the program publication, LaRue as MC, everyone who donated food items for the Food Bank and monetary donations which will be awarded to the local Hope Bridges Society and, ultimately, towards a much needed Performing Arts Center in Strathmore.

The boy’s soccer team weren’t the only ones competing in South Central zone playoffs last week. The Strath-more High School, SHS, boys Rugby team went to Calgary on June 3 to compete in the bronze medal game.

“It was kind of exciting for the boys,” said Tracey Hamilton, whose son is on the team. SHS played against Highwood High School, and defeated them with a final score of 25-12.

“Most of the game was pretty close and then right near the end they scored a couple of times,” said Ham-ilton.

“It was a strong team effort, the

scoring was spread between the backs and the forwards with everyone contributing to the final result,” said coach Brad Steele.

“The backs put together some very good plays and the forwards moved the ball well, and gave the backs a lot of quality ball.”

The rugby team has had a good sea-son this year. For many of the players this was their last high school game.

Strathmore Bantam lacrosse team members Brady Morris and Cody Willis have something extra to cheer about this sum-mer.

Both of the boys, who are 14, competed against 35 other players in Okotoks to see who would be picked from Zone Two for the Alberta Summer Games. Garyd Coccimiglio, also a mem-ber of the Bantam Venom, team was to compete but was unfor-tunately unable to attend.

Morris and Willis were the only two who went to repre-sent Strathmore and both were picked for the Zone Two Sum-mer Games lacrosse team.

“We only had two kids who tried out and we lucked out be-cause they both made the team,” said coach Hal Morris.

This won’t be the first time Strathmore players have gone to the games; there have been four or five others who have gone in the past.

“This year was kind of unique because of the large turnout of kids trying out, so there was a lot of interest and kids wanting to go,” said Hal.

Another unique thing about

Willis is this is his first year playing lacrosse. He was always a hockey player, and the Mor-ris’s managed to convince him to give it a shot.

“We convinced him to try lacrosse this year and he just picked it up, he’s a natural,” said Hal. There will be over 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials

participating in the Summer

Games and more than 2,000 vol-unteers. There are 15 different sporting events and all of the kids competing range from ages 11 to 17-years-old.

The Summer Games will be taking place in Peace River from July 19 to 25. The lacrosse por-tion will be taking place from the 22 to the 25.

The Lyalta Community Club put on their first annual Lyalta Sports Challenge on June 5. The weekend was packed full of friendly competition and lots of entertainment. The teams participated in volleyball, basketball, home run contest, and the Lyalta crawl relay. Wendy Tashlikowich Photos

The Lyalta Community club hosted their first annual Sports Challenge over the week-end. For $100 a team, people were invited to take part in the Sports Challenge on June 5. The fee also included free camping. Teams were made up of six people and there were originally six teams but one

didn’t make it. It was called the Crawl to Lyalta Hall, and par-ticipants were given T-shirts. Some of the activities were vol-leyball, badminton, and basket-ball. There was also a home run derby and dragon boat races.

“We got really fantastic feed-back from everybody. Every-one did state an interest that they would like to come back next year,” said Kim Proust one of the organizers for the chal-

lenge. “We’re hoping to have it grow

to more teams and maybe a few more events.”

At night there were some in-door ping-pong and dart tour-naments. Despite the wind and rain the event was a success . Teams came from all over, in-cluding Stettler and Calgary. There were no awards handed out, but a local team was the overall winner.

Members of the Strathmore Legion travelled to Calgary on June 5, to take part in the 39th annual dart shoot. Once a year the ladies of the group get together, either at the Ogden Legion in Calgary, or here in Strathmore.

“We want to go to 40 years,” said Jacqueline Har-

wood, whose mother Nattie Kernaghan started the Kernaghan Memorial Shoot in 1973. Trophies are awarded to the top players and there are usually 50 to 60 participants.

“There were not as many this year, maybe about 30,” said Harwood.

It is one of the longest running groups who have stuck together throughout the years. Next year the shoot will be held at the Strathmore Legion.
