13th Sunday in ordinary time

Theme: Learned Indifference:

One of the most influential forms of Western spirituality is the Spiritual Exercise

of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Two aspects of this spirituality are of crucial impor-

tance. First, Ignatius’ spirituality is grounded in the conviction that God is to be

found (experienced) in all things. All is grace and is, therefore, capable of re-

vealing the absolute mystery we call God. Hence, the spiritual life is not a with-

drawal from our everyday life, but a deeper insight into the many things which

surrounds us. In the midst of this, we can experience the One who is our peace

and hope.

The second aspect of Ignatius’ spirituality is “learned indifference.” This should

not be confused with apathy. Rather, learned indifference means that there is no

created reality which gains our ultimate allegiance. We stand in a posture of

openness to the ever-greater reality and love who is God. There is no final rest,

security or peace to be gained in any finite reality. Anything which tries to claim

such an allegiance from us must be rejected as an idol.

To see God in all things powerfully connects with learned indifference. For to

see this is to look beyond the visible to the presence of God who is greater than

all. To see God in all things is to refuse to be fixed or bound to a thing or

worldly achievement. Learned indifference is the stance of freedom whereby

Christ has made us free to do the father’s will.

Tema: Aprendido Indiferencia:

Una de las formas más influyentes de la espiritualidad occidental es el Ejercicio

Espiritual de San Ignacio de Loyola. Dos aspectos de esta espiritualidad son de

importancia crucial. Primero, la espiritualidad de Ignacio se funda en la convic-

ción de que Dios debe ser encontrado (experimentado) en todas las cosas. Todo

es gracia y es, por lo tanto, capaz de revelar el misterio absoluto que llamamos

Dios. Por lo tanto, la vida espiritual no es un retiro de nuestra vida cotidiana,

sino una comprensión más profunda de las muchas cosas que nos rodean. En

medio de esto, podemos experimentar Aquel que es nuestra paz y esperanza.

El segundo aspecto de la espiritualidad de Ignacio es la "indiferencia aprendida".

Esto no debe confundirse con la apatía. Más bien, la indiferencia aprendida sig-

nifica que no existe una realidad creada que gane nuestra lealtad final. Estamos

en una postura de apertura a la realidad cada vez mayor y el amor que es Dios.

No hay descanso definitivo, seguridad o paz que se pueda obtener en una reali-

dad finita. Cualquier cosa que intente reclamar tal lealtad de nosotros debe ser

rechazada como un ídolo.

Ver a Dios en todas las cosas con fuerza se conecta con la indiferencia aprendi-

da. Porque ver esto es mirar más allá de lo visible a la presencia de Dios que es

más grande que todos. Ver a Dios en todas las cosas es negarse a ser fijo o atado

a una cosa oa un logro mundano. La indiferencia aprendida es la postura de li-

bertad por la que Cristo nos ha hecho libres para hacer la voluntad del padre.

derse a la luz de la indiferencia aprendida. "Quien ama a padre o

madre, hijo o hija, más que a mí no es digno de mí. El que no toma

su cruz y viene en pos de mí no es digno de mí. El que busca sólo a sí

mismo se arruina, mientras que el que se pone en nada para redescu-

brir quién es ". Jesús nos está diciendo que ninguna relación, por

muy íntima que sea, puede tener precedencia sobre las demandas del

reino. Aferrarse a las cosas y las relaciones como si fueran definiti-

vas es llevarnos a la ruina. ¿Por qué? Porque al final, todos estos

serán revelados como ídolos. Los ídolos no dan vida eterna. Por el

contrario, el que muere a este mundo, es indiferente a él, llega a la

vida eterna.

San Pablo, escribiendo a los romanos, nos recuerda que el bautismo

es nuestra entrada a la indiferencia aprendida. Los cristianos son

hechos, no nacidos. A través del bautismo, hemos sido sepultados

con Cristo. Es decir, morimos ante las afirmaciones finales de este

mundo. La avaricia, la lujuria y el orgullo (una trinidad impía) no

ejercen el control último sobre nosotros. El bautismo es nuestro rena-

cimiento en la novedad de la vida. Es decir, ahora vivimos para Dios

y nuestros ojos se abren para ver su graciosa presencia en todas las

cosas. Somos liberados para usar las cosas y disfrutarlas para la ala-

banza de Dios y el bien de nuestro prójimo. Las cosas y las relacio-

nes toman un nuevo significado. Ya no demuestran nuestro valor.

En nuestra lectura de los Reyes Magos, el hombre santo Eliseo es

recibido en la casa de una mujer de influencia. Ella es capaz de ver a

Eliseo como "un hombre santo de Dios". Ella puede ver a Dios traba-

jando a través de él. Eliseo por su parte responde a su necesidad de

un hijo. Hay una mutualidad en su relación. Ella proporciona hospi-

talidad. Eliseo no es sólo un tomador. Él no está atrapado en su traba-

jo a la exclusión de otros. Es sensible a su situación. Por lo tanto,

"Esta vez el año que viene te acaricias a un hijo bebé."

En conclusión, ver a Dios en todas las cosas y aprender la indiferen-

cia aumenta nuestra conciencia de la presencia de Dios y nuestra

libertad para responder a las necesidades de los demás. La indiferen-

cia aprendida es una lección que no podemos permitirnos no apren-

der.

The words of Jesus in our gospel reading need to be

understood in the light of learned indifference. “Whoever loves

father or mother, son or daughter, more than me is not worthy of

me. He who will not take up his cross and come after me is not

worthy of me. He who seeks only himself brings himself to ruin,

whereas he who brings himself to naught for rediscover who he

is.” Jesus is telling us that no relationship, no matter how inti-

mate or humanly important, can take precedence over the claims

of the kingdom. To cling to things and relationships as if they

are ultimate is to bring ourselves to ruin. Why? Because in the

end, all such will be revealed as idols. Idols do not give eternal

life. By contrast, the one who dies to this world, is indifferent to

it, comes to life eternal.

St. Paul, writing to the Romans, reminds us that baptism is our

entrance into learned indifference. Christians are made, not

born. Through baptism, we have been buried with Christ. That

is, we die to the ultimate claims of this world. Greed, lust and

pride (an unholy trinity) do not exercise ultimate control over

us. Baptism is our rebirth into newness of life. That is, we now

live for God and our eyes are opened to see his gracious pres-

ence in all things. We are liberated to use things and enjoy them

for the praise of God and the good of our neighbor. Things and

relationships take on a new meaning. They no longer prove our

worth.

In our reading from the Second Kings, the holy man Elisha is

received into the house of a woman of influence. She is able to

see Elisha as “a holy man of God.” She can see God at work

through him. Elisha for his part responds to her need for a son.

There is a mutuality in their relationship. She provides hospital-

ity. Elisha is not just a taker. He is not caught up in his work to

the exclusion of others. He is sensitive to her situation. Hence,

“This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.”

In conclusion, seeing God in all things and learned indifference

increase our awareness of God’s presence and our freedom to

respond to the needs of others. Learned indifference is a lesson

we can ill afford not to learn.

Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic adoration is a practice in the

Roman Catholic tradition, in which the

Blessed Sacrament is exposed and

adorned by the faithful. Prayer and Medi-

tation in the presence of the Eucharist out-

side of Mass is called Eucharistic medita-

tion.

Our Lady of Good Counsel will have Eu-

charistic Adoration the on First Friday of
