STRONG KIDS CAMPAIGN

Last month the Healthy Lifestyles Department hosted both a Zumba Thon and Spin-A-Thon as part of our Annual YMCA Strong Kids Campaign in which 100% of the proceeds raised will bene-fit youth programs and scholarships here at the Vanderbilt YMCA. Through these fun filled events we were able to raise a grand total of $630.00 and would like to thank all the participants and the Healthy Lifestyles staff who came out to support our great cause. Hope to see you at our other Strong Kids Events in the future!

VICTORY CELEBRATION

On Tuesday, June 26th, the Vanderbilt YMCA celebrat-ed reaching our 2012 Strong Kids Campaign goal of $242,000! The funds raised help provide youth programs and scholarships. These scholarships allow children, families and individuals in financial need to

take part in the Vanderbilt YMCA’s membership and programs. As a non-profit, we rely upon donations from our members and friends to enable us to fulfill our mission of turning no one away due to an inability to pay.

HEALTHY SUMMER EATING The summer months provide an excellent opportunity to pre-pare healthy meals. With the wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables available, there are limitless ways to prepare foods that are both nutritious and delicious. Try choosing lean meats and combining your favorite veggies to create salads or mix your favorite fruits and blend with milk and yogurt to create a healthy smoothie while you’re on the go. Be creative and keep your meals full of color and you will be sure to have a successful summer of eating well!

JULY IS UV SAFETY MONTH! With this beautiful weather, we want to make sure you and your family have a fun and safe summer. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the main cause of skin cancer (which is the most com-mon form of cancer in the US), and can also cause damage to the eyes. While anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is greatest for people with light-colored skin with freckles, blond or red hair, and blue or green eyes. To prevent these risks, here are some things you can do: Try staying out of the sun between 10am and 4pm, use sun-screen with SPF 15 or greater, cover up with long sleeves, pants, and a hat; check skin regularly for damages, wear sunglasses outdoors, and use swim goggles whenever you swim. Be safe and enjoy!
