Buckhorn Ski/Snowboard ClubJoins LA Council—Buckhorn Ski/Snowboard Club is abackcountry/off trail resort for downhillskiers, snowboarders, and cross-countryskiers. Their resort is a frozen-in-time 1950’sski area that is run along the lines of a co-op.

Buckhorn has a two story rustic hut thatsleeps up to 40 people with full kitchenfacilities. They have a gripper tow that givesyou access to over 40 acres. Low costmemberships are available. Once memberslearn the open & close up procedure, theyhave year round use of the cabin.

Buckhorn hosts pool parties, beach parties,canoe trips on the Colorado River, hikes toa 60-foot Kodak moment waterfall, lowcost trips to Mammoth, a yearly weeklongtrip to a resort out of state, and whitewaterrafting on the Kern River.

Anyone can try out their resort for only $5 per adult and $2 per child. This costincludes your lodging & lift-ticket. Youmust sign a waiver of liability.

Buckhorn invites LAC members to jointhem at the lodge for the following events.

August 10 & 11, 2002 Buckhorn will offersupervised rock climbing at Buckhorn &Mount Williamson. Bring a pot luck dinneritem for Saturday evening & spend thenight at the lodge.

September 28, 2002 Buckhorn will bedoing a “blind” wine tasting. Bring yourfavorite wine & see how it stands up.

I’m writing this article frommy brother’s place in centralOregon following the FarWest Ski Association’sannual convention inPortland. Wow, do thosefolks in the North Westknow how to throw a party!

The challenge has beenissued to the San DiegoCouncil, who will hostnext year’s conventionin Palm Springs.

The Convention—Our council made outlike a bandit in awardspresented at theconvention. In theOutstanding Clubcompetition WailersSki Club took 2nd place

in Class A, and Single SkiClub won 1st in Class AA.

In publication competitionAuslich, Tri Valley andUnrecables Ski Clubsplaced 1st, 2nd and 3rd place,respectively, in Class A;Century City, Pacific Rimand Single Ski Clubs placed1st, 2nd and 3rd in Class AA.

In web site competition TriValley placed 1st whileAuslich and Unrecablestied for 2nd place in Class A;Pacific Rim and CenturyCity took 1st and 2nd placein Class AA. Congratula-tions to these clubs and to

all the others who enteredthese importantcompetitions.

For the individual awards,past LAC President GeneFulkerson won the highesthonor, the Hans Georgaward, Gordon Cardonawas given the JimmieHeuga award, and our V.P.Communications,Catherine Ohl, was giventhe President’s award byFWSA President SteveCoxen. Again congrat-ulations— this time toseveral special people fromour council.

Summer Events—What’s down the road forcouncil activities? On theimmediate horizon is ourfirst mid-summer CasinoNight on Saturday, July20th. This promises to be a fun-filled and excitingevening. SeeJacquie’s columnand flyer on page6 for details.

As the monthsslide by, we’llkeep youapprised ofadditionalevents,including SkiDazzle, Snow

Gala, etc. In the meantime,support your club’sactivities. A lot of peopleare working hard to get youoff the couch.

Benefits of MembershipWe are often asked what the Los AngelesCouncil of Ski Clubs (LAC) does for theClubs. As it turns out, there are a numberof important benefits for your Club to joinLAC.

• Links to Club Web Sites, contactinformation and trip dates are posted onthe LAC Web Site— www.lacouncil.org.

• Each Club is listed in the LAC Directory.It is distributed to the Ski Industry andlocal Ski Shops and given out to visitorsto our booth at Ski Dazzle. We list clubofficers, membership, and trips.

• Each Club receives a copy of the bi-monthly LAC Newsletter “Snow Scene.”

• A forum is provided for the Clubpresidents to exchange ideas, problemsand solutions.

• Clubs have the ability to obtaininsurance with few exclusions.

• Club’s are represented at Ski Dazzle and areable to earn money by working the Swap.

• Membership in LAC automatically givesyour Club membership in the Far WestSki Association (FWSA) and the NationalSki Council Federation (NSCF).

• Clubs and/or Members are able toparticipate in LAC and FWSA Ski Weeks.

• Clubs are encouraged to join one of LAC’srace leagues. In the summer, Clubs canfield softball and volleyball teams. Inaddition, LAC hosts a softball tournamentannually in Palm Springs.

• Rokka League and LAC each offer Raceand Snowboard Camps to Club members.

• Clubs are listed in FWSA “Skier’s Guide.”

• Club members can attend the AnnualSnow Gala Dinner and Dance. The Galaalso recognizes the Man and Woman ofthe Year from each of the Clubs. �

Los Angeles Council had 29 delegates at the70th Annual FWSA Convention held at theMarriott in Portland, OR June 7-9, 2002. Ifyou weren’t there, you missed a good one.We had representatives from Auslich, SouthBay, Wailers, Beach Cities, Conejo, PacificRim, Century City, Singles, Tri-Valley,Edelweiss, Unrecables, and Grindelwald.

The weekend started out with a RiverBoat Cruise on the Williamette River.Friday, we had the choice of skiing Mt.Hood, golfing Sandpoint, wine tastingor shopping. The evening was kickedoff with the Silent Auction and wasextremely successful as some of us gotvery good deals on fantastic trips.

Saturday, we were busy from 7 AMuntil the wee hours. Jacquie Nemorspent most of the day judging theCouncil’s Men & Women of the Year.

Bonnie West and Ed Knott sat in on theSki Week Bidding for 2004 FWSA SkiWeek. Shirley Stretch-Stephenson directedthe judging of the Club contests. CatherineOhl presented a seminar on the “Principlesof Design for Web and Print.”

Lunch was spectacular and highlighted by thepresence of Bill Johnson. He shared hiscourageous story and treated us to a viewingof the movie of his accident and recovery thatwas shown for the Olympics.

We ended the round of meetings with aCouncil Caucus where we were introducedto the candidates running for office and Edmapped out the strategy for voting.

There was a pre-party before we got dressedto the nines for an evening of great food,good company, deserving awards anddancing until we dropped non-stop fun.

Sunday started at 7:30 AM with a BloodyMary followed by the general meeting, acouple of awards and finally the elections.Ken Calkins, Beach Cities, was re-electedfor another two-year term as trustee.

LAC Awards—Los Angeles Council won the lion’s share ofthe awards given out by FWSA.

Gene Fulkerson – Hans Georg Award forhis long term service to the sport of skiing.

Catherine Ohl – President’s Award forresearching FWSA history and redesigningthe FWSA Awards Booklet.

Gordon Cardona – Jimmie Heuga Awardfor his demonstration of courage and skillin three areas: the ski slope, the humanbody and the courageous heart.

Getting there is easy;it is very close to Denver;they get lots of snow; and itis big. The mountain is afantastic skiing mountainand with Intrawest takingover the management, it will

soon be another Whistler orMammoth.

Patrollers Form Union— The Denver Post reportsthat six pro ski patrolunions have agreed to jointogether in a national labororganization.

Patrols at Aspen, Brecken-ridge, The Canyons,Crested Butte, Killingtonand Steamboat — about500 patrollers in all —are already unionized. Anational union is the firststep in improving theworking conditions ofpatrollers nationwide.

Snowboarding LawsuitDismissed—A U.S. District Judge hasdismissed a wrongful

death lawsuit against JacksonHole Mountain Resort. A16-year-old boy was jumpinga tabletop and died onlanding from a skullfracture and chestinjuries. The familyclaimed that Jackson Holehad changed the obstacle thenight before and hadn’tadequately tested it.

The judge ruled that thereis an inherent danger whenjumping in a manmadeterrain park “speciallydesignated and designed forsuch activities” and that aperson entering this areaassumes the risk of injury.

Aspen Gets X-Games—In 2003, Aspen will onceagain host ESPN’s Winter XGames. The seventh editionof the games will be held atAspen’s Buttermilk late nextJanuary and early February2003. It is the second year ina row the resort will host theX Games.

Vail Buys Heavenly—Vail Resorts, Inc. andAmerican Skiing Companyhave closed the sale of

Heavenly Ski Resort to Vailfor $102 million (including$2.7 million of assumeddebt), less a cash adjust-ment of $2.8 million for anet sale price of $99.2million.

Whistler—The season at WhistlerMountain will continue untilJune 9. Whistler will close assummer skiing begins on theBlackcomb glaciers on June10 until August 4. �

Have you ever watched the professionals ski? The bestskiers show very little up and down movement, butspread their feet apart and smoothly roll both skis fromedge to edge. There is no pivoting of the skis and rarely

any skid—just arc-to-arc carving.

Balancing on inline skates is identical tostanding over the sweet spot on a modernslalom ski. There is little margin for error.You can’t be too far forward, and sittingback will put you down in a second.

Find a wide paved area with a gentlepitch. Try a local school. Set up some

traffic cones and “run gates.” Wear ahelmet, knee and elbow pads and wrist

protectors, and “ski” this slope all summer. The moremiles you skate, the more ready you’ll be to make preciseturns and impress CCSC next season. �

LAC is made up of 31 member clubs located throughoutthe greater Los Angeles region. The council offers a forumfor clubs to come together to share activities and lessonslearned. LAC sponsors a major Ski Week, Club Races,Volleyball, Softball, Gala Dance and summer event.
