Watermelon Fun Facts

The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt

Watermelon is 92% water

Watermelon is cousin to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash

There is a heated debate among botanists and horticulturalists as to whether the watermelon is a fruit or vegetable (we say lets not get involved, lets just eat them)

Early explorers used watermelons as canteens

According to Guinness World Records, the world’s heaviest watermelon weighed in at 350.5 lbs.

Supercharge your memory

Studies show that these 4 quick and easy tips can reduce your risk of brain aging when added to your daily routine!

Walking - All types of exercise are great for your body, but University of British Columbia scientists say when it comes to protecting your memory, walking is best. Walking (and similar aerobic activities like gardening or biking) builds your hippocampus, the brain region that helps you learn and remember new things!

Go shopping - Strolling through the aisles of any store stimulates your neurons. Plus, it gets you moving, which pumps blood to your brain. That’s why Johns Hopkins researchers discovered that people who shop at least once a week have better memories.

Drizzle on the Olive Oil - Women whose diets include extra-virgin olive oil have fewer memory problems, new Columbia University research shows. Turns out, a compound in olive oil appears to aid in the removal of beta-amyloid, the protein that contributes to Alzheimer’s disease.

Easy Guacamole

Ingredients

2 avocados - peeled, pitted and diced

2 teaspoons salt, or to taste

1 large tomato, diced

2 jalapeno peppers, chopped

1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1 onion, diced

Directions

1. In a medium bowl, mash the avocados and stir in salt to taste.

2. Mix in the tomato, onion, jalapeno, cilantro and lime juice.

3.Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving.

How to prepare an Avocado

1. Use a medium or large cook's knife to cut the avocado in half, rolling the avocado so you cut around the stone. Twist the two halves to separate.

2. Use a teaspoon to remove the stone from the centre of the avocado. Use a dessert spoon to scoop the whole avocado flesh out from the shell if required.

Pick of the crop…….Avocado!

Avocado is incredibly nutritious . What we refer to as “Avocado”, is the fruit of the avocado tree called Persea Americana. The Avocado is a tree that is native to South Central Mexico, classified as a member of the flowering plant family Lauraceae. Avocados are commercially valuable and are cultivated in tropical and Mediterranean climates throughout the world. It is often called “Alligator pear” which is very descriptive because it tends to be shaped like a pear and have green bumpy skin like an alligator. Botanically Avocado is a large berry containing a single seed. This fruit is recognised for its high nutrient value and is added to all sorts of dishes due to its good flavor and rich texture. These days, Avocado has become an incredibly popular food among health conscious individuals and is often referred to as a superfood which is not surprising given its health properties. Avocados offer nearly 20 vitamins and minerals in every serving, including potassium which helps control blood pressure. Avocados are a good source of B vitamins, which help fight off disease and infection. They also give you vitamins C and E. Avocados are low in sugar and they contain fiber, which helps you feel full longer. In one study, people who added a fresh avocado half to their lunch were less interested in eating during the next three hours. Avocados are high in heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acids and loaded with powerful antioxidants, these nutrients are very important for eye health. Studies show these nutrients are linked to a drastically reduced risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, which are common in older adults. Therefore, eating avocados should have benefits for eye health over the long term.

Avocado fun facts…..

Avocado trees do not self-pollinate; they need another avocado tree close by to bear fruit and they grow in pairs on the tree. This is why the Aztec people in central Mexico see it as a symbol of love.

Avocados are poisonous to birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, and basically all pets. This is a good reason to keep your avocados all to yourself!
