When we look back over the lives of saints, we see, over and over again, how they took Jesus’ message of rest and retreat to heart. St. Francis would often go away by himself to spend time in prayer and rejuvenation. He even had a small hermitage called the Carceri built in the hills above Assisi where he could go regularly. When we remove distractions and clutter, and spend time apart, we often are better able to hear God’s voice in the simplicity and silence.
What do you hear when all is quiet?
“Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture.” Says the Lord in today’s reading from Prophet Jeremiah. How important it is to ask God to bless our Diocese with an abundance of priests and to ask Him to bless the priests we have with the graces they need to live out their vocations in holiness and integrity. If you think God is calling you to serve the Church as a priest or religious, please call or write Father Norm Carroll, Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected].)
Marriage Moments: Summer is a time of rest – sort of. Maybe you take a vacation or ease up on your work schedule. But you may still feel busy. Can you take some quiet, restful time a couple of times this week? Parenting Pointers: Honor yourselves. Why not make a day that doesn’t involve cards or gifts, but rather do something fun as a family, even if it just means taking a nap.
Catholic Forum: Listen to Catholic Forum every Sunday morning at 10:05am on WDEL 101.7FM, 1150AM. Next Sunday, July 29, 2018, Mr. Mike Boyle will discuss one of the most unique and longest-running church fundraisers in the Diocese of Wilmington, the annual St. Joseph Mission Church Jousting Tournament and Horse Show that has taken place in Cordova, Maryland for 150 years.

STAND UP – So the Lord relented. “Exodus 32:14” “To bend again,” is the root meanings of the word relent. Moses turned out to be a strong advocate for his people. Pleading their case before an angry God and successfully convincing God to bend again. In our household, the youngest, Margaret, is the most convincing negotiator. She seems to have just the right way of “imploring,” as the Scriptures say of Moses. She knows it too. Once she said to me, “Mom, I’m not a spoiled brat, but I am a handful once in a while.” That’s some impressive level of self-awareness for a five-year-old! Sometimes my husband and I worry we are just letting ourselves be manipulated. But usually, she isn’t really asking too much, and she is learning how to stand up for herself. I know that quality will come in handy as she gets older. The psalmist writes, “Moses, his chosen one, withstood him in the breach to turn back his destructive wrath.” Are we teaching our children how to stand in the breach? How to be strong advocates for mercy? How to make the powerful relent? L. Press
Tips for growing a healthy prayer life: Frequent the sacraments. If you can make daily Mass even once a week besides Sunday Mass, you have doubled your access to the greatest gift ever given humanity. If you go to confession at least monthly, you are surely going to get a multitude of graces. Put these on your calendar so you don’t skip them. Establish Good Habits: You should be able to rely on your habits to help you, not hurt you, in your prayer. Experts recommend that a good habit takes about 66 days to establish. Accountability Counts: The battle of prayer is strengthened when we share accountability with others. We aren’t meant to be isolated spiritual warriors, but an army, united in prayer together. Find someone who is more objective than you are to look at your prayer life, see how you are doing, and observe how the Holy Spirit is working. Fast Regularly: There is a great power in fasting. We see it in Scripture when Jesus fasts. When we have more control over the desires of our bodies, we can pray better. Overcome Distractions: The simple way to overcome a distraction is to not give in to it. Once you realize you are distracted, turn your heart and mind back to your prayer, not the distraction.

Poor Boxes at the Exits of Church
A Message from the St. Vincent DePaul Society
Our main source of revenue comes from the poor boxes at the exits of the church. Help us to help our own needy.
Drop a coin in one of the boxes. The Society of St. Vincent DePaul is an international Catholic organization of lay persons, founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam and his companions. In the spirit of justice and charity, its members seek to help those who are in need. Members of our parish who wish to contact the St. Vincent DePaul Society may do so by calling 302-322-1525 or calling the rectory directly and requesting a member of the Society to help them. If you are interested in joining the St. Vincent DePaul Society, please call the rectory office to do so.
Someone will contact you. Scrip Program: We are selling the gift cards at the rectory during the hours of 9AM - 2PM.
If you would like to purchase them, and pick them up at mass, please call the rectory, order them and we will have them available at the mass of your choice. Thank you.
