Holiday Weekend Help Needed!
This is a summer holiday weekend. In other words, we expect to be short on volunteers at this Sunday's Dinner for the Poor & Homeless.
You've heard the phrase, "it takes a village." When it comes to these dinners, it takes a parish. You've always come through in the past when we make a special plea for help. Whatever time you can spare, we'll gladly take it. No experience is needed.
We set up and cook from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, prepare to serve at 2:45 pm, and clean up the Kitchen and Parish Hall starting at 3:30 pm. We especially need volunteers to clean up. It's a relief to see fresh faces coming to help as the Dinner winds down.
Do you like to bake? Please drop off your home-made desserts in the Parish Hall by 1:30 pm.
Notes from Fr. Nick
The Catholic Church on Film
Almost from the days Edison first turned the crank of his movie camera, the Catholic
Church has been the subject of film artists. Saint Joan of Arc made it to the cinema even
before there was sound. If you’re of a certain age, The Song of Berna-
dette, Bells of Saint Mary’s and Going My Way probably stirred your
Catholic identity and remain nostalgic reminders of your youth.
Sad to say, the Church often has been portrayed inaccurately and
occasionally blasphemously. In the 1930’s, American bishops became
so concerned about the moral tenor of movies that they insisted the
film industry censure itself. The results were mixed: on the one hand, writers and
producers had to take care presenting adult material and this concern produced some
of the most creative scenes on film. In the film Notorious, for example, Alfred Hitch-
cock, a devout Catholic, got around the three seconds a kiss was allowed to last by
having Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant embrace and break apart numerous times
during a romantic scene. Hitchcock’s creative directing made the kiss last over
2-1/2 minutes, and is considered one of the most highly-charged embraces in film
history. This scene was surely more romantic than the explicit sex portrayed today.
On the other hand, the film industry’s self-censure often produced a rather naïve
look at the world. The ‘good guy’ always had to win by the end of a film.
Although this is a nice sentiment, it doesn’t square with reality. The entire genre
of tragedy was practically expunged from film. Classical tragedy was permitted,
but any new work had to finish with an uplifting ending.
Eventually, as the “Hayes code” lost its authority, thought-
provoking films such as The Mission and, recently, Doubt,
have deepened our faith as well as entertained us.
More recently, the Oscar-winning film Lady Bird had a positive Catholic subtheme.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, it is a coming-of-age story (set in Sacramento) about a
rebellious high school student. The Church figures strongly in the lives of the stu-
dents, but is not portrayed in a caricaturistic or hyper-critical fashion.
At my previous parish, St. Lawrence O’Toole, we had regular evenings of Catholic-
themed films, followed by a discussion. If anyone is willing to work with me in
putting on a similar program here at St. Mary Magdalen, please let me know. It’s a good way to create an
evening of entertainment and sparkling conversation.

Ways You Can Help Our Migrants
Stand Up For Immigrants: Join the next interfaith
vigil, Compassion Has No Walls, on Friday, July 12th,
11:30 am-12:30 pm at 630 Sansome Street (Federal
Immigration Court), San Francisco. This is a time
and space for the interfaith community to demon-
strate support for immigrant communities. Join
others in prayer and to bear witness to the govern-
ment’s actions towards our refugee community.
The next meeting of the St. Mary Magdalen Refugee
Aid Committee is Friday, July 12th, from 4:00 to 5:00
pm in Norton Hall. Please join us! These are some
of the ways the Committee works with our immi-
grant and refugee community:
Support for Casa Francisca in Oakland, a guest-
house for immigrants and asylum seekers;
Accompaniment at immigration court-hearings;
Phone and letter writing campaigns;
Provisioning as needed, such as our recent
parish drive to provide clothing and toiletries
for the McAllen, Texas, Respite Center led by
Sister Norma Pimentel, Executive Director of
Catholic Charities.
Bring your energy and ideas! There are many op-
portunities in our community to get involved and
help refugees both here and at the border.
Please pray for the immigrants
and asylum seekers trying to
cross our southern border.
They are trying to enter our
country because they are
fleeing violence and despair
in their home countries. We
can hardly imagine the circum-
stances that cause families to embark on this dan-
gerous journey. The recent drowning in the Rio
Grande of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his
23-month-old daughter, Valeria, casts a harsh spot-
light on the desperate circumstances driving people
out of their homelands, and the humanitarian crisis
on the border, which are not being alleviated by
U.S. policies. Children are still being separated
from families, and refugees receive inadequate or
no medical care. Please keep them in your prayers.
Our New Deacon, Jeff Burns, Ph.D., Preaches at All Weekend Masses for the First Time
Deacon Jeff, Fr. Nick, and Fr. Laurent stand between St. Law-rence O’Toole parishioners Maria Aranas and Claire Elmore.
Every parishioner who attended
Mass last weekend was privileged to
meet our new deacon, Jeff Burns, as
he preached at all our Masses.
Deacon Jeff is a professor of U.S.
Church History at the Franciscan
School of Theology, and when the school was still
located in Berkeley, he served alongside Fr. Nick at
St. Lawrence O’Toole for many years. Deacon Jeff
recently accepted Fr. Nick’s offer to join our parish
(although on a limited basis the first year, as he must
commute from San Diego).
His popularity at St. Lawrence O’Toole is legendary:
some of Fr. Nick’s former parishioners present at his
Jubilee in May promised that we’d “be seeing a lot
of” them here once Dc. Jeff arrived... as Maria Aranas
and Claire Elmore (pictured above) proved last Sunday.
Faithful volunteer Jolanda Sullivan and cook Fabienne Korta handed out desserts at a recent Dinner.
2nd-Annual St. Mary Magdalen Festival: Program Highlights
Speaking at all weekend Masses:
Alison Benders, Associate Dean, Jesuit School of Theology. Her research interests include race as a social justice issue, moral transformation, and the contributions of the Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan. Professor Benders is the author of Just Prayer. We’ll be privileged to hear her reflections on St. Mary Magdalen at all our weekend Masses.
