Sunday Ordinary Time ~ Except for the Resurrection, the story of the multiplication of the fish and loaves is the only miracle told in all four gospels. There is near perfect agreement in its details: they went away to a deserted place; great crowds came; they were hungry (for food? for teaching? for healing?); five loaves and two fishes; 12 baskets were gathered; five thousand men; all ate and were satisfied (filled). What is also clear in the story is that people were coming because they believed Jesus had something to give them. They weren’t looking for a meal. They were looking for words and actions that

could teach, heal, comfort, give meaning to and make life better. Many biblical scholars shriek when someone interprets this story not as a literal miracle, but a miracle of sharing. Jesus speaks, blesses, loves and teaches so profoundly that people pull food from beneath their cloaks and the great miracle is one of profound ‘sharing’ by all. The scholars say: “not so!” There is NO hint of people sharing in this gospel. What is boldly stated and is consistent in ALL of the gospels is that Jesus blesses the FIVE loaves and TWO fish; and this food is multiplied to feed thousands with plenty left over – a miracle pure and simple. It also echoes the Moses story with the miraculous bread (manna) sent from heaven – sufficient to satisfy the people’s hunger with more than they needed. It also clearly prefigures not a multiplication story but a story of bread and wine that also satisfies the deepest hungers and thirsts – a story of bread and wine that become the body and blood of Jesus Christ. By definition, miracles are experienced and unable to be explained. They are considered to come directly from God. This story by definition is a miracle. But the story is also a consistent statement about God throughout the pages of the Bible. God loves lavishly. God responds to our hungers and thirsts by giving what we need. God’s grace is super-abundant, more than we can ever absorb or understand. God’s grace is given freely and not earned. God’s grace is there before we even know it. Like the sun and the rain, it falls on all of us. Opening to this grace is our challenge and call.

PARISH FINANCES — PROGRESS REPORT + TOGETHER IN MISSION

Just for a little perspective I would like to give you a comparison between Together in Mission 2017 and 2018. Remember, for this annual campaign, every parish does the same goal. They are to raise 10% of their previous year’s ordinary income.

Our Goal for 2017: $35,500. Our Goal for 2018: $34,650.

6/30/2017: # of Pledges: 263; PLEDGED: $32,407; PAID: $23,402. 6/30/2018: # of Pledges: 205; PLEDGED: $33,242; PAID: $24,787.

2018: 58 fewer pledges. $835.00 more was pledged. $1,385. More has been paid.

More money has been given by fewer people this year.

NOTE: It is estimate that there are 2,000 families in St. Bernard Parish. 205 families have made pledges. (Slightly more than 1/10th of the parish). If only ½ more (103 families) also pledged we could easily bring in $9,863.00. All monies received over the goal is returned to the parish for our needs.

17º Domingo Tiempo Ordinario ~ Excepto por la Resurrección, la historia de la multiplicación de los peces y los panes es el único milagro contado en los cuatro evangelios. Hay casi un acuerdo perfecto en sus detalles: se fueron a un lugar desierto; grandes multitudes vinieron; tenían hambre (¿de comer?, ¿de enseñar?, ¿de sanarse?); cinco panes y dos peces; 12 cestas fueron recolectadas; cinco mil hombres; todos comieron y

quedaron satisfechos (llenos). Lo que también está claro en la historia es que la gente venía porque creían que Jesús tenía algo que darles. No estaban buscando saciar su hambre. Buscaban palabras y acciones que pudieran enseñar, sanar, consolar, dar sentido y mejorar la vida. Muchos eruditos bíblicos ponen el grito en el cielo cuando alguien interpreta esta historia no como un milagro literal, sino como un milagro de compartir. Jesús habla, bendice, ama y enseña tan profundamente que las personas sacan comida de debajo de sus capas y el gran milagro es el de un profundo ‘compartir’ de todos. Los eruditos dicen: "¡no es así!" En este evangelio NO hay indicios que la gente haya compartido. Lo que se destaca y es consistente en TODOS los evangelios es que Jesús bendice los CINCO panes y DOS pescados; y esta comida se multiplica para alimentar a miles con bastantes sobrantes — un milagro puro y simple. También hace eco de la historia de Moisés con el pan milagroso (maná) enviado del cielo, suficiente para satisfacer el hambre del pueblo con más de lo que necesitaban. Claramente se refieren no una historia de una multiplicación, sino una historia de pan y vino que también satisface las ansias y los anhelos más profundos — una historia de pan y vino que se convierten en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús. Por definición, los milagros se experimentan y no tienen explicación. Se considera que provienen directamente de Dios. Esta historia, por definición, es un milagro. Pero la historia también es una declaración consistente acerca de Dios a través de las páginas de la Biblia. Dios ama generosamente. Dios responde a nuestra hambre y sed dándonos lo que necesitamos. La gracia de Dios es súper abundante, mucho más de lo que podemos absorber o comprender. La gracia de Dios se da libremente, no se gana. La gracia de Dios está allí incluso antes de que nos demos cuenta. Como el sol y la lluvia, cae sobre todos nosotros. El abrirnos a esta gracia es nuestro desafío y nuestro llamado.

Solo por perspectiva me gustaría ofrecer una comparación entre ‘Unidos en Misión’ 2017 y 2018. Recuerda, para esta campaña anual, toda parroquia tiene el mismo objetivo. Deben recaudar el 10% de los ingresos ordinarios del año anterior.

Nuestra Meta para el 2017: $35,500. Para el 2018: 34,650

6/30/2017: Promesas: 263; CANTIDAD: $32,407; PAGOS: $23,402 6/30/2018: Promesas: 205; CANTIDAD: $33,242; PAGOS: $24,787

En 2018: Hubo 58 promesas menos, y se prometió $835 más.

Se han pagado $1,385 más.

Ha habido más entradas con una cantidad menor de participantes.

NOTA: Se estima que hay 2,000 familias en San Bernardo. 205 familias han hecho promesas. (Un poco más de 1/10 parte de la parroquia). Si solo ½ más (103 familias) también se comprometieran, fácilmente podríamos reunir $9,863. Todo el dinero recibido por encima de la meta se devuelve a la parroquia para sus necesidades.
