There may be setbacks and delays, depending on the course of the pandemic. Sunday School, for example, may be different in the fall, and we’re planning for various scenarios. We do know that we won’t have an in-person Greek Festival this year; our Festival Steering Committee recently made this decision and is working on a thoughtful plan to provide pickup service for the food sales that we still need to help support our parish ministries. But we do know where we’re going, at the end of it all – being together in Christ - and we know that it will take hard work, patience and prayer to get there. May the Lord keep all of our parishioners healthy and safe in this difficult time. May we respond to this rapidly-evolving situation with love for God and for each other, never taking our wonderful community for granted. And may He bring us all back together again soon. ST. NICHOLAS MONTHLY NEWSLETTER

One thing I have asked of the Lord, that I will seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. -Psalm 27:3

There are more than a few lessons for us all from the COVID-19 pandemic; certainly, many of us have a new appreciation of how very important our St. Nicholas community – and the act of being together - is for our sense of well-being.

During the shutdown, our church leaders and members have risen to the occasion. We’ve live-streamed the services, giving almost all of our parishioners at least some access to worship. Volunteers have made more than 1,200 face masks for those who need them and run errands for people in high-risk groups. Sunday School classes, youth groups, the Men’s Fellowship, the Parish Council, Philoptochos and others have met by Zoom to carry on the ministries and management of the church. And a number of our members have been even more generous than usual to help make sure the parish is financially stable.

Although we are far from Chicago, our parish’s thoughtful and energetic response to the pandemic has been noticed by our Metropolitan Nathanael. As a result, several of our parishioners have been appointed to Metropolis committees that are dealing with various aspects of the crisis.

Now, thanks to our COVID-19 Safety Team, we’re able to start gathering again for worship. Things are not back to “normal” – we’re limited in our numbers, people have to wear masks, there is no coffee hour, and so on – but we’re getting there. But in the meantime, simply being together for the Divine Liturgy is a delight that seems long overdue.

Little by little, we’ll be able to re-establish our parish life.

With love in Christ, Father Doug and Father Michael

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Monthly Newsletter July 2020

Dear St. Nicholas Family,

I am excited to be able to write to you again after these past 4 months. It has been a most unprecedented and uncharted time. But as we are a community of family worshipers, we found our way to stay together in spirit, even though we were physically apart. We live streamed our services, celebrated Easter virtually via live stream and Zoom, we caught up through our Sunday Zoom fellowship coffee hours, and we followed all directives to progress to level three of preparedness to re-open our Church. I believe our community has grown closer and stronger.

Our spiritual Fathers, along with the Parish Council, have worked tirelessly to keep our staff and facilities safe and updated as the requirements changed daily. Special thanks to our COVID Parish Safety Team, Father Doug, Father Michael, Carol Kamburis, Dr. Pete Stavrides, Alexandra Carey Devers, Sandra Kamburis and Chris Paradowski for their hard work and attention to detail. Metropolitan Nathanael granted his blessing for Level 3 status, permitting 25% of our capacity to attend divine services at Church and the FLC. During Level 3 -- 112 total attendees are permitted at Church and 25 total attendees at the FLC Chapel. While we are operating at Level 3, there are specific guidelines that must be followed, we must sign up on line to attend services, masks must be worn at all times, and we must maintain social distancing. A complete list of guidelines may be found on our website.

Please follow this link to sign up for July services: www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a4caaad2aa5fb6-divine1 Please remember to be on time for services, a parish council member or safety team member will be at the door to check you in, if you are late they must wait at the door until you arrive, therefore missing the service. If you are not able to attend, please delete your name from the signup, allowing room for other parishioners to attend. Please contact the Church for baby blessings and memorials. Koliva and coffee hour continue to be suspended, however paximadia are available to take home. At this point all non-religious activities are still on hold. We know this is a lot to overcome, but as we get used to our new normal, things will get easier.

The Festival Committee is meeting and working on alternative options to host our Taste of the Festival in July and our Annual Labor Day Festival. More details to follow.

Our parish, along with our sister parish Sts. Constantine & Helen, have been selected to host the 2021 Metropolis Clergy Laity Assembly which will be held September 26-29, 2021. More details to follow.

As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me.

I remain, In Christ’s Work, Helen Yiatras Carey

Sunday School & Youth News

Even though it was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, we had a great Church School year and a strong youth-ministries program over the last school year. Our teachers and staff did an excellent job throughout the school year and continued to reach out to students through emails, personal messages and Zoom classes even after we were no longer able to gather in person.

Please be assured that our teachers will be meeting over the summer (by Zoom, of course) to make plans for the coming school year.

But in the meantime, I’m happy to say that we will have Virtual Summer Sunday School this year as a way to keep the kids connected with the church and each other. The school will meet Sundays - July 5, 12, 19 and 26 and August 2 - for Pre-K through 5th grade. Parents, please check your email for more details to come.

We will be taking advantage of the quiet summer to have in-depth conversations with parents about our youth ministries in an effort to make sure they are meeting the hopes and needs of our families.

Finally, as soon as we have a clear picture of how Sunday School will look this fall – especially if we’ll be able to meet in the classrooms or stay on Zoom, we’ll let the parish know. We hope to see some of you at Zoom Summer Sunday School and at church. Until then, we wish you a pleasant summer filled with joy, good health and God’s blessings.

In His Service, Bess Fitzmaurice

Dear St. Nicholas Family & Friends, Traditionally, the annual Greek Festival presents a tremendous opportunity for us to unite together as family & friends to share our faith and culture with the St. Louis community. This year, we are faced with “untraditional” challenges due to the circumstances of the pandemic. The Metropolis of Chicago formed a Parish Festival Analysis Committee led by Father Doug Papulis, along with clergy and festival chairs from six parishes including our parish of St. Nicholas. The purpose of the committee is to develop profitable ideas for parishes to implement as alternatives to the “traditional” Greek Festivals, in accordance with local guidelines. Pending approval from His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael of Chicago, the St. Nicholas Festival Executive Committee would like to move forward with our summer festivals in a creatively modified format. The plan is to offer curbside pick-up ONLY at both the Taste of the Greek Festival at the Family Life Center at the end of this month and the Greek Festival at St. Nicholas over Labor Day weekend. We will be offering a focused menu based on best sellers, profitability and logistics. Patrons will be able to order through an online platform that manages incoming orders, secures pre-payment, and tracks inventory. Our festival committee leaders have been consulting with local public health officials and continually assess, based on current conditions. Also, the festival committee is working in conjunction with our Parish COVID Safety Team to ensure all guidelines of the CDC and local authorities are followed during food preparations, set-up, event execution, clean-up, and tear down. More details to follow on the revised format and guidelines, once approved. In the meantime, we are continuing to seek monetary donations to help fund the festival expenses. Each year, we receive generous donations from you, our parishioners, that directly affects our net income. Please make checks payable to St. Nicholas Greek Festival and mail to the Church address.

Thanks for your consideration, generosity and support!

The St. Nicholas Greek Festival Executive Committee

Philoptochos Corner July 2020

Although the COVID-19 pandemic kept us physically separated, St. Nicholas Philoptochos remained united in spirit by continuing our mission to serve those in need. Zoom meetings were held immediately to implement ministries specific to the challenging times and to stay connected with our members.

Call List Ministry - The Call List Ministry was established by Father Doug and the Philoptochos Board to call parishioners to ask if they needed assistance with errands or grocery shopping, ensure they were receiving Church communications, able to view our livestream services, and provide Church updates. Special thanks to Presvytera Christina Papulis for organizing a team of volunteers who assisted parishioners with errands.

The Power of Thank You - Mary Ellen Anastas wrote notes of prayer and thanks to first response heroes and essential workers in our parish family. Thanks to Mary Ellen for her thoughtfulness!

Masks Matter - We are forever grateful to Presvytera Christina Papulis, Teresa Ferguson, and Linda Nicozisin who together have made over 1100 masks that were distributed to nursing homes, parishioners, essential workers, and more. All materials and supplies were donated by these three ladies as well as Mary Anne Koch, Christina Ginos, Dianne Zotos, Lexie Dendrinelis, and Gracie Livaditis. We are proud to contribute to this worthy initiative.

Grecian Kitchen Summer Order Form – Treat your family and friends to home-made Grecian specialties for this summer! We are offering Pastitsio, Spanakopita, Tiropita, Baklava, Galaktoboureko, OPA Salad Dressing and Hellenic Cuisine Cookbook. Remember we sell our specialties year round. Please fill out the order form in this month’s newsletter and mail to Dianne Zotos, 1213 Hillcrest Field Drive, Chesterfield, MO 63005.

We are in this together and shall continue to pray as one. Looking forward to reuniting with our amazing Philoptochos ladies! Thank you for your continued support. With love, Carol Kamburis President – St. Nicholas Philoptochos

PARISH LIFE

Prayer For the Departed

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and over thrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest

to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled

away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because

there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.

For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who

have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and

life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Monthly Newsletter July 2020

As the new year began, we were looking forward to a year of clear vision in 2020. Now that half the year is behind us, we have experienced anything but a clear vision. Life is unpredictable and the challenges that our St. Nicholas family has faced this year have been met in a dignified way! We started the year with the goal of 500 family stewards. At the end of May, we had 346 stewards. Thank you to those who have made the commitment to support our ministries. We are all human beings and we are all children of God made in His image, regardless of how we look or where we come from. We are seeing way too much finger pointing, assigning blame, hate and suppression. This will lead us down the wrong path. Love, humility, respect and helping the oppressed, our Christian values, is the path to healing. We can do our part through our ministries and make choices that make our circle of influence a better place. Now more than ever, it is important for everyone to be involved by financially supporting our current ministries and even more important to expand our ministries with your time and unique talents. Reaching our goal of 500 stewards or possibly exceeding 500 is paramount. We all need to do what we can! If you have any comments or questions please contact me by my personal email [email protected]. As always, we are good with God through our trust and faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Stay well and God bless us all. Yours in Christ,

George Ellis, DDS
