etc, for six days. A mini-bus took us from Melbourne and we set up camp the first night just below Mount Skene. The weather was very cold with sleety rain. The next day with the weather deteriorating we walked to Low Saddle and set up camp. That night we had a heavy dump of snow. Some members were having trouble coping and we had higher country ahead of us. The leader wisely decided to turn back. We headed west to a hut at Rehn's Flat for the third night. On the fourth day with everyone freezing cold and sopping wet we walked south to the Jamieson road. Fortunately a 4WD occupant we encountered was able to contact the bus line in Mansfield and we reached Melbourne late that night for a warm bed.

14 July 2020

In 1982 the club was incorporated and the title changed to the Melbourne Walking Club. About ten years ago is was agreed to permit female membership and the club currently has about 250 men and 30 women, with the latter becoming more active.

When I joined the club activities comprised day walks of about 16km, overnight pack-carrying trips up to 7 days, extended tours interstate and overseas, 4WD safaris and canoeing. I was a member of the Executive for about 30 years. Also convenor for maintenance of a club hut near the summit of Mount Donna Buang. Following that I became the Tours Officer responsible for compiling the program for club activities and appointing leaders.

The club has a modern well-appointed lodge on Mount Buller. This replaced an earlier lodge (1951-1991) which was one of the first on the mountain. I believe some club members were the first to cross the Bogong High Plains in winter.

In the early days club members pioneered many routes across remote areas of the state where there were no tracks or maps. However, in more recent years, mainly due to the ageing of long-standing members, and newer male members being recently retired, our activities have become more restricted and are generally limited to shorter walks in the metropolitan area and longer bush-walks some distance from the city. Most younger members mainly restrict their activities to using the ski lodge in winter.

In addition to extended tours in Australia I participated in overseas tours to New Zealand, U.K., Western USA, China, Nepal, India, Hawaii and New Caledonia. The trip to China involved spending a week in each of three remote areas in the south-west where we had a local guide to lead walks and provide advice. The trip to Nepal was to the western end of the Himalayas and we had to rely on Sherpas for organization and porters to carry main loads. On a short plane flight from Katmandu we sighted Mount Everest, but no climbing.

One memorable tour in Australia was to Kakadu National Park where we spent three weeks walking and camping mainly on the escarpment where there are no tracks. A guide from Darwin was our navigator and food drops were provided at the end of the first and second weeks. We had a mixed group with female visitors, but the heat and humidity was so severe that at any lagoon encountered everyone just stripped off and into the water.

My most miserable experience was a proposed overnight walk from Mount Skene, east of Jamieson, to Mount Hotham, carrying tent, sleeping bag, food,

Chatter Around the Hut

This story below details the construction of our first hut at Donna Buang and is reproduced in full from “The Melbourne Walker” (Vol. 3 1931).

Author Robert Henderson Croll wrote extensively for The Melbourne Walker and served the club for 50 years until his death in 1947 at age 78. Croll was an athlete, bushwalker and active in art and poetry circles..

A HOUSE IS BUILT. The Epic of the Hut. The Melbourne Walker Vol. 3 (1931) pp 17-19.

Part 3 of 5. (27 April 1930 – 10 May 1930)

Incessant rain fell and a piercing wind blew, and a message was telephoned from the Lookout Hut to stop others from coming up to the summit to share such conditions. However, on the 27th, eight weekenders appeared in a charabanc, driven by Mr. Chambers. They were Messrs. R.M. and A.S. Bailey, Hemmy, Sid, Smith, Burns, Schlippe, P. Read and Sutton. A new game was now introduced. Material in sections (all of it heavy) had to be carried from the road to the site, over a quarter of a mile of badly broken country covered with logs, stumps and rocks. A chain was formed of five pairs of men, each taking a section in turn, until finally it reached the objective. In this the Club gratefully acknowledges the assistance given by Mr. Chalmers. This trying job took all day.

Construction progressed rapidly, and was shared in by Messrs W. Reid and Joe Matthews, who reached the spot on Sunday. The sides and roof beams were put up in heavy rain, from which as before there was no escape. Tired and soaked as they were, the men still showed excellent spirits. A set-back was met when it was found the door would not fit owing to an error in its construction, but on the party’s return to town a new door was ordered.

The frame stood deserted in its tiny clearing till May 3, when Messrs. Burston, Robinson, Sutton and Tranter visited the mountain for some ski-ing, and unscrewed the misfitting door, to be ready for its journey back to town.

Gardners manufactured a new door and side panel, and on Saturday, May 10, these were picked at Healesville station and placed on the roof of Mr. Chalmers’ charabanc by a group of members, Messrs. Trahair, Cook, Bentley, Matthews, Tranter, Wright, Weir, W. Murphy, E. Godfrey, Broad, W. Young, Schlippe, Robinson, Bertram, Burns and Waters, who reached the hut that night and were joined by Messrs. Burston, and Crimp next morning.

If you are interested in visiting the hut or booking an overnight stay to enjoy the area please contact us at [email protected].

COVID-19 Walking Activities

Due to the slowing of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Victoria, restrictions on sport and recreation activities have been eased. The Victorian Chief Health Officer has approved the resumption of sport and recreation activities effective from 13 May 2020, subject to restrictions.

At an Executive meeting on Monday, 18 May 2020, the easing of restrictions and implications for the Melbourne Walking club were discussed. As many of our members have expressed interest in walking again as soon as possible the Executive is advising the following: • MWC regular Walks program will recommence on 1 July 2020

subject to any restrictions which may apply at the time. • Between now and 1 July 2020, it is planned that there will be:

◊ Two modified MWC Sunday walks held. If you are willing to lead a Sunday walk, please contact Kim Rosen 0422 804 816.

◊ The following five leaders need to complete recces for their walks and are willing to conduct the recce on a Wednesday and be accompanied by up to 9 members until June 1, and 19 members thereafter: • 27 May 2020 – Oak Park Circuit – Gordon Proudfoot 9717

8322

• 3 June 2020 – Dingley Braeside Circuit – Bruce Armstrong 9578 2221

• 10 June 2020 – Eastern Suburbs Walk – Miles Pierce 9890 8319

• 17 June 2020 – Royal Park to Middle Park – Oliver Lucas 9571 6865

• 24 June 2020 – The Pines to Eltham – Marsha & John Rankin 9842 1350

◊ For walks prior to 1 July 2020, the circular will not carry rendezvous information. Members wishing to walk will have to contact the leader and register to attend. The leader will then advise rendezvous details.

◊ The leader should complete the Blue Attendance Sheet for all (to minimise contact of attendance sheet and pen by all walkers).

MWC Directions for Outdoor Walks held prior to 1 July 2020: • Groups of up to 20 people are permitted outdoors (after June 1) • Maintain a physical distance of 1.5m

• Consider carefully if you wish to be exposed to infection risks from others, even with special measures in place for public transport and outdoors.

Mystery Photo Solved

The mystery photo from last month was the City Hall in Maryborough, Queensland. Congratulations to both Jenny Hosking and Tony Cagney (who tracked it down using Google).

The New Woodshed at the Donna Buang Hut Takes Shape

There has been a lot of work at the Donna Buang hut lately. The new woodshed is now almost complete thanks to Lance Cranage and his team of helpers.

The old shed was built in 1958. It was very well constructed but could not withstand the fallen trees. It took a lot of work to demolish it.

10 Years Since John Moore’s OBE

Lance Cranage reports that John Moore will be 90 on 9th July 2020. He was Treasurer 1978-1979, President 1992-1995, Secretary 1995-2010 and Life member since 2000. He was on the archives committee for many years, and led many activities within Australia and overseas.

A Members Tale - December 2019

I joined the "Melbourne Amateur Walking and Touring Club" in 1976 at the age of 49 years with no previous experience in organised walking. The club was formed in 1894 for the purpose of competitive walking by men only who usually dressed in normal street clothing. Later they became more adventurous by "touring" in areas more remote from the city. At 125 years it is now the oldest walking club in Australia.

The new frame which was de-signed by Lance Cranage was carefully moved into position

Escapes: Pannells, Hylands, Cahills and Gormanns Tracks are all 4wd accessible.

Note: The liquidambers and other deciduous trees near the start of the route on Forest Drive are particularly beautiful in autumn.

Alternative Walks: 1. a much shorter loop between the Powder Magazine and Viewing Rock

Lookout. 2. the historical sites of Heathcote. Heathcote Visitor Centre, cnr High

and Barrack St, Heathcote has the accompanying flyer or this link: http://www.heathcote.org.au/images/documents/Heathcote-

contact with someone suspected to have coronavirus. • Undertake activities that are within your ability to reduce the risk of an

accident that would require emergency rescue. • Maintain hygiene. Avoid touching shared services and wear gloves.

Use hand sanitiser after contacting any surfaces e.g. gates, fences or benches. Cough into your elbow. Do not share personal items on a walk.

• Respect other users and take turns to move through any narrow sections of track.

See you soon on the trails ... Jenny Hosking, Activities Officer.
