TIME is often a healer.

And it’s fair to say the appointment of Paul Roos as Melbourne coach has already helped close the wounds of a miserable 2013: Melbourne’s fifth worst season since it became a foundation VFL/AFL club in 1897.

The acquisition of Roos was an outstanding get, led by chief executive Peter Jackson, who doggedly pursued – and ultimately landed – the 2005 Sydney Swans premiership coach back into the hot seat, after three seasons away from it.

Roos’ record, experience and aura are matched by few in the game and already his presence has seen a dramatic shift in energy and direction at the club.

Add to his arrival, a revamped coaching structure, playing list and leadership group, led by co-captains Jack Grimes and Nathan Jones, and a new era is well and truly under way, making for an intriguing 2014.

Expectations for improvement are without question, but how far and how quickly remain difficult to predict. Even someone of Roos’ stature wouldn’t dare place an exact number of wins in 2014, given the variables in his first season at a new club.

“It’s going to take some time and we really understand where we are at,” he said.

Not surprisingly, Roos, who has signed on for the 2014-15 seasons, with an option for 2016, said his ultimate goal at Melbourne was to set high standards, refine the game plan and emulate benchmark teams: Hawthorn, Fremantle, Geelong and the Sydney Swans.

But he was adamant Melbourne’s immediate objective for 2014 was to improve its poor percentage from 2013.

“We’re a two win team and only 54 per cent [on the ladder], so really the benchmark for us is percentage,” he said.

“People talk about win/loss, but before we worry about how many games we’re going to win, you’ve got to be competitive for longer.

“There’s a lot to work with and we’re excited about getting stuck into it.”

And with genuine reason.

For starters, Roos has some impressive bookends. In attack, Mitch Clark, Chris Dawes and outstanding youngster Jesse Hogan shape as an imposing forward line. Tall timber trio James Frawley, Colin Garland and Tom McDonald head an impressive defence.

The midfield, which was a major issue for the Demons in 2013, has been strengthened significantly in the off-season.

The club has gained 12 new players – including Hogan, who is now officially on the primary list – with the vast majority midfielders.

The recruitment of best and fairest winning duo Daniel Cross (Western Bulldogs) and Bernie Vince (Adelaide) has added hardened AFL bodies to the middle. They have offset the loss of the experienced Colin Sylvia, who departed for Fremantle as an unrestricted free agent, and retirees Aaron Davey and David Rodan, the most noticeable absentees from last year.

Dom Tyson (Greater Western Sydney) is another key pick-up, remembering he was a No.3 NAB AFL Draft pick just three years ago. Roos has already said Tyson is “an absolute star player in the making”.

Viv Michie (Fremantle) and Aidan Riley (Adelaide) have been groomed at rival clubs and are eager for midfield opportunities.

Melbourne’s first selection in last November’s NAB AFL Draft, attacking midfield prospect Christian Salem, plus exciting small forward Jay Kennedy-Harris and the raw, but quick Jayden Hunt will be given time.

Roos all but confirmed this when he spoke about the trio.

“My expectation of the new guys coming in is that they’ve just got to fit in and they’ve got to learn some good habits and they’ve got to train hard,” he said.

“If we’re a good organisation and a good team, young players find it very hard to get into really good sides. We want to be a really good side, where young players – no matter what they’re drafted at – struggle to get a game.”

Although Melbourne still has one of the youngest and most inexperienced lists in the competition, importantly, it now has a squad with realistic and exciting potential.

Steadily, its wave of talent is building in games experience, but at the top end, it is still light on for matches played.

Cross (210 matches) and N.Jones (157) are the only two Demons with 150 games experience or more. Cross, of course, has yet to play for the red and blue, but his leadership has been evident in the pre-season. Jones has been Melbourne’s best performer for the past two seasons, highlighted by his back-to-back Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy wins.

The likes of Vince (129 matches), Frawley (118) and Garland (101) – all in the 101 to 150 games bracket – are integral to the cause. As are Clark (97), who is on the cusp of reaching the ton, Dawes (83) and Jack Trengove (79), who given healthy runs could also reach 100 games this season.

in the 51 to 75 games category, and will be critical to Melbourne going to the next level in 2014 and beyond.

Seven players have played between 26 and 50 games, including Luke Tapscott (45 matches), McDonald (39) and Sam Blease (31). Overall, most of the players in this area are still establishing their game, but can strengthen Melbourne’s depth considerably.

Fourteen players have played 24 matches or fewer, including Jimmy Toumpas, Tyson and Jack Viney, who have played just 40 games combined and are viewed as decade-plus prospects in Melbourne’s engine room.

And when you consider the likes of Hogan, Dom Barry – who has yet to play an AFL match, but has remarkably played for the Indigenous All Stars team, which represented Australia in last year’s International Rules series – and Salem are still uncapped, there is plenty of hope and optimism about Melbourne’s future.

Roos undoubtedly shares these sentiments.

“I can predict that at some point in the next two to three years, we’re going to see a really good competent team. I’m extremely confident that’s going to happen,” he said.

“Then, really it’s going to be up to the players to see how quickly they can embrace it.”

Players taking ownership of the club’s journey is exactly what Roos wants. And although crystal balling Melbourne’s 2014 remains a great unknown, he said the players must step up now.

“It’s in the heat of the battle that we [will] know [how the players fare],” he said.

“Will the boys stick to the game plan? Who are the leaders? And who’s going to stand up?

“At this stage, I’ve been more than happy, but I don’t think we’re going to know enough about this group until about the middle of the year, as to where it’s going and how quickly it can get there or whether it can get there.”

Only time will tell. But the indications are that it will be worth the wait.

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2014

It’s hard to predict exactly how we will go during the season, other than the fact that we want to establish a brand and style of football that every time the Melbourne supporters come to the game, they know what to expect and they can see some genuine improvement week in, week out.

That’s the first goal of the coaches.

Then on a weekly basis, we’ll continue to improve our expectations.

Once again, the expectation of the coaches, along with the leaders, is to continue to improve every single player on the list that we have at the moment.

It gives the best possible opportunity to being the best possible player they can be.

Once we get to the middle of the season and we've seen them play for 10 or 11 weeks, that’s when I’ve got a better idea of which players are capable and maybe at the end of the year, who we may have to move on and bring other guys in.

THE JOURNEY SO FAR …

I’ve really enjoyed being back as an AFL coach. The hunger is certainly there. That was one of my concerns going into it. Where I was during last year and where I got to – the last hurdle was to not get to training and say ‘what am I doing here?’ But I haven’t had those thoughts at all.

It’s certainly a different feeling from when I was at Sydney and took over from Rodney Eade. We’d played in finals and the club was pretty stable, so it’s a very different feel from when I was at the Swans, compared to taking over at this footy club.

The perception of Melbourne on the outside is of a bottom club, but the reality is that there are some genuine positives. For example, the players have some terrific training habits.

The personnel that chief executive Peter Jackson has established in management and the football department is outstanding.

I’m really confident in the direction that Peter has taken the football club, along with president Glen Bartlett and the new board.

The energy and support, and enthusiasm across all areas of the football club are fantastic leading into the season.

We do understand that there’s going to be some bumps and bruises along the way, but as senior coach of the Melbourne Football Club, I’m confident we’re heading in the right direction.

How’s your Melbourne journey been so far?

It’s been a big change coming from Adelaide, but it’s been a good challenge so far and I can’t wait for the season.

Has it been what you expected?

It’s been more. The way the guys have attacked training, you’d forgive them for being a bit down on themselves after a couple of lean years, but they’re all positive about this year.

What’s it like shifting clubs later in your career?

It’d be bloody tough for an 18-year-old moving to a completely different city. It’s been a big move. I’ve always lived in South Australia, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

How have you found Paul Roos?

He’s been awesome and he was a big part in the decision to come. I certainly respect him and love the way he goes about it.

Do you feel the expectations?

With the move comes expectation, that’s something I have to deal with. I just want to play the best footy I can and I want the team to do well.

Which new teammate has exceeded your expectations?

The one that stands out for me is Jack Watts. He’s had huge pressure put on him in his first few years of AFL footy. He didn’t ask for that or ask to be selected No.1. He’s dealt with it very well. He’s highly respected and guys look up to him. He hasn’t missed a beat [this pre-season]. I love it when the ball’s in his hands; he makes really good decisions. I’m tipping Jack will have a standout year.

How have you found living in Melbourne?

It was a bit daunting at first. I moved in with Chris Dawes [at first] and he’s helped me a lot. I love the city. There’s always something on

… tennis or cricket; the cafes and restaurants are awesome too. I haven’t regretted it.

Are you a Victorian now?

You’ll never claim me as a Victorian! I’m a passionate South Australian. I was backing the [Adelaide] Strikers [in the Big Bash] and they went pretty average this year, so Jack Trengove and I copped a bit. I’ll be a sub-Victorian if you want!

What are your interests away from the game?

I’m a really keen cricket follower. I went to a few Big Bash games in Melbourne and Adelaide during the New Year break.

You were known as a bit of a character at Adelaide. Has that side come out yet at Melbourne?

Ha! That’s not a question for me; that’s for the other boys! I was a bit quieter early, but I know the boys pretty well now, so I stir a few of them up. I’d like to think so though.

THE 2014 LEADERSHIP GROUPMITCH CLARK:After playing 82 matches with the Brisbane Lions from 2006-11, Clark has had two frustrating seasons with the Demons, largely due to a serious foot injury. In his 15 appearances for Melbourne, he has showed exactly why he was lured to the club, impressing significantly up forward and in the ruck.

JACK GRIMES (Co-Captain):Now entering his third season as a co-captain, Grimes possesses outstanding leadership and maturity for a player still only 24 years old. Although a collarbone injury interrupted his 2013, he produced an outstanding 2012, his first as co-captain, when he finished second in the best and fairest. He is set to return to the backline this year.

JACK TRENGOVE:After being appointed the youngest captain in VFL/AFL history – he was named co-captain with Jack Grimes in 2012 – Trengove relinquished the position at the end of last season. Still only 22 years old, the midfielder has played 79 matches in four AFL seasons and remains a key part of Melbourne’s future.

COLIN GARLAND:The defender had his finest AFL season in 2013, when he finished runner-up to Nathan Jones in the Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy. Garland’s leadership has grown considerably in recent times and although his pre-season has been interrupted by an ankle injury, he remains on track for 2014.

NATHAN JONES (Co-Captain):Melbourne’s best performer in the past two seasons – as evidenced by his back-to-back Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott Memorial Trophy wins in 2012-13 – Jones has stepped up from vice-captain to co-captain in 2014. A tenacious, durable and highly consistent midfielder, Jones has missed just five matches since his AFL debut in 2006.

JAMES FRAWLEY:One of Melbourne’s most integral players, Frawley is regarded as one of the competition’s top defenders, given his ability to stymie some of the best forwards in the business and rebound out of the backline. The 2010 All-Australian and twice top three best and fairest place getter is now entering his eighth AFL season.


2014 COACHING GROUPOne of the finest coaches of the modern era, Roos was also, in his prime, regarded by many as the best player in the game. He played 356 VFL/AFL matches (269 with Fitzroy and 87 with Sydney) from 1982-98. Roos then coached the Sydney Swans to a club record 202 matches from 2002-10, including the 2005 premiership, ending a 72-year drought – the longest in VFL/AFL history. Roos also took the Swans to the 2006 Grand Final, which they lost by the narrowest of margins. He is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame and Fitzroy’s team of the century.

Entering his seventh season as a coach in the AFL, Rawlings was interim senior coach of Richmond in 2009. He has also coached Coburg Tigers (VFL) and was an assistant coach with the Brisbane Lions in 2010-11. Rawlings played 148 AFL matches from 1996-2006.

The former defender/midfielder played 198 matches and kicked 45 goals for the Swans from 1997-2008. Mathews played in the Sydney Swans’ 2005 premiership under Paul Roos. In 2012-13, Mathews was a development coach with the Gold Coast.

Allison, who played 228 AFL matches from 1987-2000, was part of the Kangaroos’ 1996 and 1999 premierships. He was also a member of the Sydney Swans’ premiership coaching panel in 2005. From 2010-13, Allison was a North Melbourne assistant/development coach.

Stone was an integral mentor in Hawthorn’s golden era during the 1980s and early 1990s and became a key coaching member in the Sydney Swans’ 2005 and 2012 premierships. In 2013, he was rewarded with the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the game.

The former Sydney Swans defender/midfielder played 111 matches from 1994-2003 and was a member of their 1996 Grand Final team. From 2007-10, McPherson was part of the Swans’ football department/coaching panel, before focusing on business interests in recent years.

Miller played 133 of his 157 AFL matches with the Demons from 2002-10. He topped Melbourne’s goalkicking in 2008 and was regarded as its best player in its most recent final in 2006. He added a further 24 games with Richmond from 2011-12.

Paul Roos: Jake has had an exceptional pre-season, despite having an off-season shoulder operation. He didn’t miss any sessions other than the contact drills and is well-placed going into season 2014.

Paul Roos: Rohan, as we know, is a terrific athlete. Once again, he excelled in all of the running drills. He’s been working very hard on his pure football stuff, and has been working with the coaches to identify where he can improve. He has also been trying to pick up the game plan as quickly as he can.

Paul Roos: Dean had a slower start to pre-season, but certainly post-Christmas, he picked up his training significantly and really started to embrace the message from the defensive coaches. We’re looking forward to seeing him improve on last year, as a second year experienced player.

Paul Roos: Jack had a bit of a hiccup with his foot, which didn’t allow him to do as much as he would’ve liked pre-Christmas. He was certainly on track to improve in most areas of his game and now that he’s back training hard, he should be able to establish himself as an AFL player.

BOXINGAway from football training, boxing is something I love to do to keep fit. It’s a great way of letting off some steam and really testing yourself. I really enjoy it, especially every now and then when you get the chance to go inside the ring.

AMERICA

I have a lot of family in LA and Cleveland and I love travelling around America. I have been there quite a few times for holidays and weddings and my favourite place in the world would have to be New York. This photo is of my sister Jen, my cousin Tony Jnr and I in Cleveland before the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic NBA game in 2010.

BRIGHTON GRAMMAR FOOTY TEAMOne of my favorite childhood memories is playing school footy with all my mates. I was at the school from 1999 - 2013 and have a lot of great memories, especially on the footy field.

FAMILY DINNERSHaving dinner with my family is a great way to catch up with them all. There’s always an everlasting spread of food on offer too! It's great quality time together, having a few laughs and sharing some old stories.
