COVID 19 Update for our Local
As of June 19th, 2020 we have not had any reports of positive COVID 19 cases
for our local 668 members. We know that some of our members have been
tested, however we do not have an accurate number of how many members
have been tested.
During the months of March, April and May we had 126 total members not
working due to the pandemic. Jobsites that were shutdown or reduced to a
skeleton crew included Tate and Lyle (North and South) plants, SIA, Cargill,
Tyson, Indiana Packers, TRW and Drury Inn. Evonik reduced the Construction
workers hours to 30 hours a week.
Starting June 19th most of the jobsites have returned to normal hours and
crew sizes. There are still some members that were working at the Tate and
Lyle plants that are not back to work yet. Drury Inn is the exception to jobsites
being back up and running. We have been told that Drury Inn manages all of
their own construction on new hotels. They also do not borrow money to
build new hotels by using their profits to build instead. We are not sure when
this job will continue with the down turn in the tourism and hotel industry.
As of June 19th, there are still 76 members at home due to Covid-19 reasons.
There are 52 Journeymen available on Book 1. There is 1 apprentice on the
apprentice Book. There is 1 Telecom apprentice on the apprentice telecom
book. There are 3 Construction wiremen (CW’s) available.
Monthly Union meetings during April and May were cancelled. The E-board
was still able to meet virtually and conduct business during these months.
Starting in June, both the monthly union meeting and E-Board were able to
meet in person.
The Hall closed for the months of April and May and become by appointment
only. The Fish Fry and the Summer Picnic were cancelled and the 110th
anniversary banquet has been rescheduled for September 18th 2020.
LEJATC made the decision in March to cancel in person classes for the apprentices. Through Zoom and other online apps our instructors
were able to continue their instruction and the apprentices were able to complete their online work. This allowed for the
advancements of the apprentices to take place as they would have without the pandemic.
LEJATC has had to postpone interviews for the 2020 first year class. The plan is to interview the selected candidates July 28th through July
31st. Interviews will take place at the union hall meeting room so that social distancing can take place.
The NEDRA, a Memorandum of Understanding between the IBEW and NECA, remains in effect.
IBEW conferences and training that have had to cancel due to the COVID 19 include –
• Construction/Maintenance District meetings District membership development Women’s Conference
• EWMC Conference RENEW Conference International Membership Development
Work continues to look strong through the summer. We have had numerous open calls so far in June. There is some concern that we will
experience a lull in the work picture during the 4th quarter of 2020 and the first quarter and possibly into the second quarter of 2021.
Stay safe and healthy Brothers and Sisters,
JP
