Message from the SuperintendentCelebrating an incredible school yearDear Fitzgerald family,

It is amazing to think that another school year has drawn to a close. This year was marked

by many successes.

Among the highlights, one of our teachers was a finalist for Michigan Teacher of the Year. We are extremely proud of Jennifer Crotty as she represents the high standard we set for fine instruction and leadership

throughout the district. In addition, several of our students won awards and

distinctions in a wide range of endeavors. Those awards are the result of small victories

all students achieve every day in the classroom and after school through diligence, hard work and high-quality support.

Districtwide, we also saw noteworthy accomplishments. We completed our one-to-one technology initiative. The school board committed to the initiative three years ago out of the desire to prepare students for the future, and we did it. We also continued to expand our career-technical options to prepare students for the jobs of the 21st century.

We continued to see growth as more families chose Fitzgerald for their children. The word is out that we are a place where all children thrive, and we are growing as a result. The numbers clearly show that we are a comeback district.

Last, I am deeply proud of our graduates. Graduation is always the highlight of the year. I never fail to be moved by the potential and hope within every graduate. It’s hard to let them go, yet I rest easy at night knowing we did everything we could to help them get a great start in life.

Thank you for being a part of the Fitzgerald family. I wish you a wonderful summer.

Sincerely,

Barbara VanSweden

Fitzgerald Health CenterThe Fitzgerald Health

Center is part of the Henry Ford Health System Department of Pediatrics and is available during the summer to provide health services including sports and school physicals, vaccines, visits for minor illness or injury, and mental health services for those ages 10 to 21. The health center is located inside Fitzgerald High School.

• Sports physicals are valid until the end of the next school year (June 2018).

• All physicals are by appointment. There is paperwork that must be obtained from the health center in addition to the school sports form.

• All patients can receive care regardless of their health insurance status, legal status or ability to pay. Health insurance is billed for appropriate services through agreements with health insurance companies. The health center can provide information and assistance in obtaining Medicaid health insurance if medical insurance is needed.

For more information, call (586) 759-9070. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m., and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The health center may be closed other days, so call ahead to schedule your appointment.

District Art ShowThe K-12 District Art Exhibit, which

took place in May at the Auto-Tech Building, was a huge success! The art exhibit is one of many ways we celebrate our students’ achievements in art. Art classes help students learn to think creatively about the world and become well-rounded individual.

School Bell: 2017-2018 Start/End TimesWe are excited to announce Fitzgerald Public Schools

is re-opening Schofield Elementary School for the 2017-2018 school year.

We needed to develop a transportation plan before reopening the school. Our goal is a schedule that picks up and drops off students in a safe and timely manner. It is also important that our students are on the bus for a minimal amount of time.

The proposed start and end times for the three elementary schools are listed below. These times are based on location of students at this time. The proposed times may change during the summer as students continue to enroll in the district.

Thank you for your patience as we work out the details of the transportation plan. The district will continue to provide updates.

• Westview Lower Elementary: 8:20 a.m. – 3:21 p.m.

Preschool Celebration Our preschoolers

and their proud parents celebrated a successful school year during Fitzgerald’s annual Preschool Celebration

on May 18. The night was filled with singing performances from each class. Parents and other family members viewed a beautiful display filled with students’ artwork.

Play and Learn GroupsChildren under age 5 and their

parents are invited to participate in our Play and Learn groups this summer. Join Ms. Gina and Ms. LaDon every Tuesday, June 20 through Aug. 8 from 10-11:30 a.m. at Westview Lower Elementary. We will also have an outdoor Play and Learn group at Shaw Park on Fridays, June 23 through Aug. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. Each week,

parents and children will participate in fun activities such as playdough, painting, storytelling and music. Snacks are provided. Every child will receive a book for their home library. For questions or additional information, please contact Macomb Family Services at (586) 226-3440, ext. 274.

Free Head Start and PreschoolFitzgerald offers Head Start for three- and four-year-olds and

the state-funded Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) free of charge to eligible four-year-old children.

Children enrolling in GSRP must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2017, and potty-trained. The program is designed to promote growth in language, social/emotional development and cognitive, fine motor, gross motor and self-help skills. There will be about eight children per teacher. A unique feature of the program will be personalized home visits and group parent meetings.

Register for GSRP Preschool online today by visiting fitz.k12.mi.us/register or calling (586) 758-0980. Register for Head Start by calling (586) 469-5215.

Transitioning into KindergartenTo help our preschoolers

prepare for kindergarten, Mrs. Lau’s kindergarten students visited Mrs. Larson’s preschool classroom. Kindergarteners shared what they like about kindergarten, what they learned in kindergarten and answered questions from our

preschoolers. A few kindergarteners even read poems they wrote in their poetry journals.

Kindergarten Registration is OpenFamilies who live in the district are encouraged to

register their child for kindergarten at any time. Register your child by visiting fitz.k12.mi.us/register to complete the online registration packet. Please call the FPS office at (586) 758-0980 if you have questions about the enrollment process.

Our kindergarten curriculum actively engages children in age-appropriate, hands-on learning experiences that build on the strengths, interests and needs of the individual child. It provides experiences that will help each child’s academic, social and emotional development. Each child will learn responsibility and develop decision-making skills to help them become self-reliant and independent in a safe and nurturing environment.

Kindergarten Eligibility InformationStudents who are 5 years old on or before Sept. 1,

2017 are eligible to attend kindergarten. A Michigan law enacted a few years ago changed the minimum age requirement for a child enrolling in kindergarten. Michigan’s “cutoff date” was previously Dec. 1, which was historically later than most other states. The cutoff date change was phased-in over three years, with the cutoff date being Nov. 1 for students starting kindergarten in the 2013-14 school year, Oct. 1 for the 2014-15 school year, and Dec. 1 for the 2015-16 school year and all future years.

If the child turns 5 years old after Sept. 1 but on or before Dec.1, the child’s parent or legal guardian can complete a Kindergarten Notification Form and speak with the principal of the elementary school in which they wish to enroll. The district can make a recommendation about the child’s readiness for school, though the parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to enroll their child.

Cure Summer Boredom with Hands-On Learning

Summer is a wonderful time for hands-on learning and creating memories with our children. Yet, the break from

school can put parents into a bind when kids don’t have enough to do. To help parents fill the summer, take a look at the following ideas offered by Theresa Swalec, principal at Schofield Early Childhood Center. The activities are free or low cost and require little preparation.

In addition, the importance of reading never takes a vacation. Read with your children every day. Build reading time into your summer routine as an enjoyable activity to do together. With older children, sit down with them while you each read your own book. Leave time to talk about the books you are reading.

Activities to try this summer:• Free kids workshops at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

• Free passes to museums are available at local libraries.

• Build a birdhouse out of popsicle sticks and glue.

• Make a giant hopscotch or Twister game on the driveway with chalk and play together.

• Create a 3D building using toothpicks and mini marshmallows.

• Go to a park, have a picnic and fly a kite.

• Create a lemonade stand out of a large box and make lemonade.

• Go camping indoors. Put sleeping bags on the floor, make s’mores and take turns telling stories.

• Make cupcakes in ice cream cones and decorate.

• Take a walk and look for bugs, birds and vegetation. Carry magnifying glasses and binoculars with you. Take photographs to share what you saw. Do research together before and after you go.

• Keep parent-child journals. Have each of you keep a daily journal about one activity you did together.

Autism Awareness Month at Westview Elementary In April, Westview Elementary held its first-ever “April is

Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.” Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States, affecting one in 68 births. Throughout April, staff, students and community members participated in a variety of educational activities about ASD including:

• Reading age-appropriate books in classrooms and facilitating classroom discussions

• Decorating puzzle pieces (symbols of ASD awareness and acceptance) and displaying them throughout the school

• Hosting an assembly with videos about how to be a friend to someone with autism; an introduction to sensory items that help students with ASD at school; and a presentation by a middle school student who spoke about living with autism and how his service dog helps him

Students raised $956.76 for the Macomb-St. Clair Autism Society through ice cream sales, hat days and staff dress-down days. To end the month of ASD activities and awareness, the entire school went outside and blew bubbles together. Thank you to Westview students and teachers for being superheroes for our friends with ASD!

Mound Park Students Learn About Economics

This spring, fourth-grade students at Mound Park Elementary hosted the annual Marketville Economy

Marketplace event. Parents and fourth-grade students participated in a mock marketplace. The students used social studies standards focusing on the economy and the production and consumption of goods and services.

Girls on the RunFifteen young ladies from Westview Elementary

participated in Girls on the Run, a 10-week character-building program sponsored by the local YMCA for third- through fifth-grade girls. Ms. Chinneck and Mrs. Murray coached the program and taught students about self respect and healthy lifestyles through character lessons with hands-on activities and running games. The Westview team worked toward the goal of completing a celebratory 5k as well as completing a community impact project. The girls and coaches completed the 5k at Lake St. Clair Metro Park on May 21. Congratulations to all!
