Donald Preussman

Donald moved to his new home on 960 Heartwood Cypress Dr. almost a year ago. He is a chaplain, and still sees a few patients. He looked at houses, condos and manufactured homes before settling on Cypress Creek Village. He saw our AARP ad, and “took a look and liked it”. Donald spent much of his childhood in Latin America before moving to Miami and opening a business with his dad. His sister still lives in Miami. Donald said he received the calling and completed a masters in Theology to become a Chaplain. Donald used to do a lot of photography, but lately has concentrated on refurbishing computers and donating them to those who can’t afford one. Donald asks that if you have a computer (not a laptop) that you are replacing, please donate it to him..he can fix or refurbish it for donation. Donald also says he would be glad to sit with any fellow resident who is ill or in the hospital.

America's Music George Kiser, Contributing Writer B. B. KING (King of the Blues) Few weeks ago I logged into my computer and read the sad news. B. B. King was born Riley B. King in Itta Bena, Mississippi and became an icon of the Blues. Hands down, Mr. King was the first to bring the blues to white audiences in the 1960’s. I attest to that fact because I was a college student attending his concert at Fillmore West in San Francisco in the late 1960s. BB came on stage and said “I am going to play the blues for you.” That was it. He played and blew the audience away. When he played “The Thrill is Gone” we were in his pocket. I became a blues fan/BB fan on that night. The audience went nuts and asked for more. Keep in mind there were six other performers on the bill including Jimi Hendrix. With that said, King introduced a unique/sophisticated style of soloing with Lucille (guitar) with string blending and shimmering vibrato that would influence other electric blues guitarists that followed. BB was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He was inducted into Blues Hall of Fame in 1980. Oddly he was not inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame until 2014. George W. Bush presented King with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. From the 1980s forward he maintained a grueling schedule of televisions and live performances 300 nights a year. In 2006 King went on a farewell world tour to packed houses in the UK, Ireland, Canada and all over Europe. Audiences could not get enough. Artists wanted to set in play licks with the master. Many did and recorded with him. Do yourself a favor and listen to ANY BB King cd. Better yet drop by the BB King’s

Blues Club the next time you head north, south or west. Clubs are in Memphis, Orlando and Las Vegas. There is not enough space in this article to list his signature songs and hits and significant cds. A Grammy Hall of Fame Award was given to “The Thrill is Gone” in 1998 as an award for least 25 years old that has “qualitative or historical significance”. BB was diabetic and did much for the cause. He passed in Las Vegas recently. We miss BB but have his solid recording to remember him forever. Did you Know? BB King’s favorite singer was Frank Sinatra. He went to bed many nights listening to Sinatra’s “In the Wee Hours of the Morning”.

Joy Rector and Bear

Joy and her puppy Bear moved into their new home at 924 Heartwood Cypress Drive recently. She is a year-round resident, originally from Lexington Kentucky. She likes to read and do volunteer work. She worked for the school system for 35 years before retiring. Joy says she will be volunteering in Winter Haven Hospital as soon as she gets settled in. Joy has a son Edward who works as a school resource officer for the Polk County Sherriff’s Department, and a daughter Penny who sells jewelry. Joy looked at 25 other parks before driving by Cypress Creek Village and taking a look. She loved it as soon as she saw it. Let’s all welcome Joy to our neighborhood.

The Village Gardens

There are many little surprises in Cypress Creek if you know where to look. Since Ed and I bike a lot, we can take the time to admire our neighbors’ beautiful gardens and landscaping. For instance, did you know we have fairies and elves in the Village? There is a whole Elvin village on Monterey Cypress Blvd. near to Wes and Barbara’s house. It seems that Wes and Barbara enjoy their little neighbors and they all live in harmony. Be sure to slow down next time you’re around 240 Monterey Cypress Blvd. and say hi to the elves and fairies.

Note: there are many beautiful gardens in the Village. Some are flower pot gardens on our lanai’s, some are in the back of our homes, not easily viewed by our neighbors. Send me pictures and a little information and we can continue this column monthly.

Did you know? Queen Elizabeth I of England was afraid of flowers.

Composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky suffered from the paralyzing fear that his head would fall off

How many lobster tails did George Riesinger consume on the Alaska cruise? Nope, I’m not telling. You’ll have to ask him….but it sure looks like he enjoyed them!

Only in Florida…. Florida is a special place where you see things that you won’t see anywhere else in the country. We have our own personality and revel in our unique view of life. Only here would you see Sandhill Cranes blithely crossing the street in front of a golf cart or bicycle rider. Only here are Glossy Ibis side by side with White Herons and little noisy Stilts. My favorite example is the Armory in downtown Winter Haven. How do you suppose that the rough, tough soldiers feel getting their weapons from a large, art deco, PINK armory? Here’s a picture. I love the irony. I’d like to make this column a regular, but it’s up to you. Send me pictures of items, places or oddities that you only see in our beautiful, tropical state. It could be fun!
