Tamara Lundgren, CEO of Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc and highly involved member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will be taking on a new and important role in the coming year. Last week, the U.S. Chamber officially elected Lundgren to be the chairman of its Board of Directors, the second female board chair in the Chamber’s 102-year history.

In addition to running one of the largest manufacturers and exporters of recycled metals in the United States, Lundgren is an active member of the Board of Directors of Ryder System, Inc., Parsons Corporation, and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Portland Branch. She is also a proud member of the Committee of 200—the international organization of senior business execut ives . While Lundgren is a major and essen t ia l proprietor for women in business, her passion lies in the amelioration of all Americans. According to U.S. Chamber President a n d C E O T h o m a s J. Donahue, “She is a t rue bel iever in our core mission: spurring s t r o n g e r e c o n o m i c growth and creat ing jobs and opportunities for Americans. We are looking forward to a banner year under her leadership.”

Since Tamara Lundgren became President and CEO of Schnitzer Steel in 2008 the company has more than tripled its revenues and has expanded its geographic footprint from 41 facilities primarily located in the Pacific Northwest to 117 facilities located along both coasts as well as outside of the continental United States. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce eagerly anticipates similar success under Lundgren’s leadership, as we continue to celebrate the social and financial benefits of free enterprise and American business innovation.

Katie Parsons freelance writer, editor and researcher with a background in the news and publishing industries.

Women with the entrepreneurial bug have so many resources at their fingertips that it can be desensitizing. There is simply no way to follow all of the advice for women small business owners that is out there and many entrepreneurs miss out on some of the basic principles of success as a result. Whether you are just getting your business plan in place or you are trying to further your brand identity, keep these tips in mind:

Test the waters. The average small business startup costs are $65,000, according to a Babson College report. That’s a scary amount to most small business owners that must take out second mortgages or seek out investors. In many cases, you do not have to sink all your funding and other resources into your business right at the beginning in order to make it work though. Start small by creating just one or two products or reaching out to local businesses with your services. If your long-term dream is to have a bustling real estate office, it’s perfectly acceptable to start with a modest location and then work your way up to your goal office space. The

same can be applied to other areas of startup or new product costs.

Believe in your business. This point may seem like a commonsense approach to small business ownership but it can be easily overlooked. Entrepreneurs tend to be visionaries but also tend to be their own worst critics. It’s okay to push yourself to be even better, but stand by what you currently offer when you interact with customers and the general public. Exude confidence and others will have faith in your small business too.

Create your own opportunities. If you sit and wait for your phone to ring, or your email inbox to fill up with request from clients, you are wasting valuable time. If you have a slow day, get on social media and promote some of your products or services. Do not wait for people to figure out how you can help them – find mutually beneficial relationships and seek them out.

Network. There are so many options for women entrepreneurs to connect that no matter what your industry, you should be able to find several groups to join. Social media networking is convenient and effective but do not limit yourself to the digital realm. Join local business

groups like the Chamber of Commerce. Set up a booth at community events. Just get out there. You are your biggest brand advocate so look for innovative ways to improve name recognition and generate leads.

Keep learning. Your small business will never stop evolving so neither should you. Subscribe to the most reputable magazines, blogs and websites in your industry and read what other experts have to say on a regular basis. If you are weak in a particular area of your business, like marketing or accounting, take a course at your local library or community college. Don’t forget to learn from your customers and employees too. Their insights will inform your future decisions and help you grow your business more quickly.

You know your brand better than anyone and where you want to take it. Combine confidence with tangible business-building tactics to grow your small business successfully. What tips would you add for other women entrepreneurs?

Do you know about--tax inversion mergers?

American High Tech Companies Likely To Head OverseasAmerican technology companies have not yet jumped the US Ship of State in the trend toward US corporations moving their HQ’s to other countries to escape high taxes, but analysts say that is likely to change. The practice, called tax inversion mergers, has a special appeal for high tech firms.

Other industries are already using tax inversion strategies. Walgreen (NYSE:WAG) is contemplating shifting its tax basis to Switzerland as part of a merger with Europe’s Alliance Boots. The strategy also allows companies access to cash held overseas without paying the 35% US corporate tax. That’s a big issue for many tech companies. According to Americans for Tax Fairness, a move by Walgreen to Switzerland would most likely cost United States taxpayers about $4 billion over five years. Illinois taxpayers would also be hurt. The company’s tax rate would be cut to 20 percent as part of Alliance Boots from about 31 percent now. Interestingly, Alliance Boots, which was originally based in Britain, moved to Switzerland in 2008 in large part to lower its tax rate.Morgan Stanley’s (NYSE:MS) Katy Huberty suggested Lexmark International (NYSE:LXK), Teradata (NYSE:TDC), and NCR (NYSE:NCR) are 3 tech firms that could benefit from an overseas tax move.

All 3 of these companies have piles of cash overseas and enough profits to benefit from a tax cut. None of the companies have said they are planning a tax inversion deal yet.

Semiconductor firms like Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN), NVDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Xilinix (NASDAQ:XLNX) could also profit from a tax-related relocation. The potential for a change in the tax code could provide a powerful incentive for companies to consummate transactions before the window closes, perhaps at the end of this year.

Wall Street bankers will be pitching inversions to a types of companies, including technology names.

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) is the biggest company yet with plans to renounce its US tax citizenship.

At least 44 American companies have reincorporated abroad or have made plans to do so, including 14 since 2012, according to the data. The US corporate tax rate is the highest among developed nations.

Those who have already moved elsewhere, mostly to Europe, include Perrigo, Tower Group (NASDAQ:TWGP), Eaton, Jazz Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:JAZZ), Alkermes, Valeant (NYSE:VXR), Tim Hortons (NYSE:THI), and Lazard (NYSE:LAZ).

Piercy Bowler Taylor & Kern (PBTK) is a full service accounting firm with the qualifications and of a large national firm, applied with the personal touch that only a smaller, less bureaucratic firm can provide.

The number of Americans filing for first-time jobless benefits fell to 312,000 last week from an upwardly revised 314,000 the week prior. Wall Street expected claims to fall to 310,000 from an initially reported 312,000.
