Building Renovation Update At the request of our building committee and board of trustees, First

UMC held a church conference on Friday, June 7, to consider increasingthe approved budget for our building renovation project. After months of work with our architect, engineers, and contractor, the building commit-tee discerned that $900,000 is the necessary figure to complete a fairlythorough first phase of the renovation.

This phase will include:xheating and air conditioning the fellowship hallxheating and air conditioning the 1925 (offices, chapel, parlor) buildingxan elevator to all three floors of the 1925 buildingxfoundation work to the 1925 building to stop seepagexexterior improvements to the 1925 building for accessibilityxaccessible restroom facilitiesxelectric, fire alarm, lighting, and carpet upgradesxremoval of the old steam heating system.

Of course, none of this renovation is possible without our combined efforts to fund it. So, the chexpresses deep gratitude to everyone who has made a commitment to the building fund campaign, anors enthusiastically invite everyone who has not yet made a gift or commitment to join the effoopened a door of opportunity before us, and it will take our combined effort to take full advantage otunity.

To reach our new financial goal, we will undertake a follow- XSILQDQFLDO FDPSDLJQWR ODVW\ Doors, Opening Hearts campaign. If you have not yet made a gift or commitment to the campaign, thwill offer the opportunity. Please pray about the gift God is calling you to share. If you have already gmitted, perhaps God has provided you a way to give a slightly larger gift or to prolong the period dyou make a monthly contribution.

Our contractors will arrive onsite on Monday, July 1, and demolition and construction will begthe following week. Thanks in advance for your patience during the construction project! Churchmove to the first floor hallway of the 1960 building, in the area of the choir room, choir officerooms. When visiting the church office please use the Cherry Street Entrance. Our staff expects toground floor office area in mid-September. Our contractor anticipates completing the entire project by2014.

An old ministry effort has a new passion and purposAngel Faith in Action has reorganized with a new board of cluding our pastor Jonathan Jonas and our former administraCarolyn Cattle. Under this new leadership, Guardian Angeltion (or GAFIA) is working toward being a full-time ministrycommunity.

GAFIA will allow all the churches and social agencies of our community to pool resources aPDNHLWHDVLHUIRUSHRSOHZLWKJHQXLQHQHHGVWRDFFHVVKHOSDQGWRGLVFRXUDJHSHRSOHZKRPLJKWSUH\

generosity. We anticipate that GAFIA will become the agency in town to administer benevolence gifRIRXUFRPPXQLW\·VFRQJUHJDWLRQVDQGWKDWZLOOEHDELJUHOLHIWRFKXUFKVWDIIPHPEHUVOLNHRXUEXVLQHtrator Lisa Moore. Salvation Army has already begun to make arrangements for GAFIA to administe

Highlights of the 2013 Holston Annual Conference

Representatives of about 900 United Methodist churchesthat make up the Holston Conference gathered at Lake Ju-naluska, North Carolina, from Sunday, June 9, throughWednesday, June 12, for their annual gathering for worship,shared ministry, and business. This was the first annual con-ference over which our new Bishop Mary Virginia Taylor presided. Bishop Taylor has served as the leader of the SouthCarolina Conference since she was elected in 2004, but she isa native of the Holston Conference, having served for yearsas a pastor and district superintendent in our conference before her election.

As always, the annual conference commissioned and ordained new pas-

tors who are just beginning their vocational ministry, and on the other end of the spectrum, the conference celebrated the retirement and the memory of pastors who have served faithfully for years. In addition to these worshipexperiences, the conference conducted important business and celebratedshared ministry. Some of the most important and impressive numbers fromthe conference are:

x 899 ³ the number of churches in the Holston Conference;

x 165,976 ³ the number of members in the churches of t he Holston Conference;

x 68,595 ³ the average Sunday morning worship attendance in the conference;

x $10.2 million ³ the 2014 budget for t he Holston Conference;

x $1 million ³ the target for our Imagine No Malaria conference offering;

x $1,135,250 ³ the actual amount received in the Imagine No Malaria offering;

x $286,410 ³ the value of mission kits contributed by Holston Conferencechurches;

The UMW met Wednesday, June12th, in the Fellowship Hall. Following the

welcome, blessing, and the reading of our UMW pur-pose, the group enjoyed delicious light refreshmentsprovided by Esther Circle.

Jackie took seven students from our church to At-

lanta where they joined another youth group fromMorristown, Tennessee. Together these studentsworked as a team to pack lunches, distribute lunchesand witness to homeless people in the inner city areasof Seven Bridges and the Bluffs. It was an amazingweek. We are very proud of our youth group and es-pecially thank Jackie for providing strong leadership.

Gengie Fisher presented a very informative pro-gram on the many areas of mission that are organizedand sustained by the UMW locally and worldwide.She reminded us that working and giving to missionsis living the life of gratitude and choosing an attitudeof thankfulness.

The Kiwanis meal served by UMW members wasvery successful and we are looking forward to the nextPHDORQ7XHVGD\-XQHWKIRU´3RW/XFNµDQGWKHODVWPHDORQ7XHVGD\-XO\UGIRU´%DUEHFXH1LJKWµ

Grace, Sarah and Martha circles will serve as hostess-es on the 25th and Deborah, Esther and Hannah Cir-cles will serve as hostesses on July 23rd.

As the numbers show, we are close to the projected income for 2013. Historically by the end of Mcome should be at 40.15%. However this year we are ahead at 40.37%. Budget income is always sligduring the summer months. This is mainly due to a decline in attendance for worship because of sumtions.

Historically by the end of May expenses are at 40.58%. Unfortunately this year expenses are sligh40.94%. The 2013 general budget deficit of $3,063 at the end of May was due mainly to the tremendoof unexpected bus repairs. The buses are older (1998 & 1999) and are requiring major maintenance reFinance Committee is planning to ask the Trustee Committee to review and analyze this problem. Otrustees meet decisions will be made as to whether or not to continue to operate the buses. If the buse
