The month of April is generally a transitional month, wedgedbetween the heady days of the First Quarter and the lean daysof Summer. For budgetary purposes, April is projected to becash flow neutral asIncome andExpenses are likely to zeroeach other out. Such was the case for April 2013. Overall, the

Church is about on course for Fiscal Year 2013. We had agood start to the 2013 Fiscal Year, but our gains to date areexpected to erode as we progress through the Summer. Still, much better to be ahead than behind.

SUMMER BOXES WILL BE GOING OUT MID-JULY TO AFGHANISTAN

Plans are now being made to send out Summer Boxes in the middle of July to some of our Troops stationed in far-remoteareas of Afghanistan. In order to do so, several steps need to be taken. Donations are needed for the following: from the Dol-lar Store packages of dice and/or puzzle books; yummy snacks nothing that can leak or melt; sunscreens and smallhand sanitizers. Any funds received will go towards shipping costs. Donations of any of these items will be more than appreci-ated and will help to make our Summer Troops Project another success.

Congratulations to 2Lt. Michael Carillo and the whole Carillo family on Michael's recent completion and graduation from ArmyRanger School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The family was able to attend the graduation and will no doubt have stories to tell.

Vantage pointIn Romania in the 1940s, Christian pastors were forced to declare their allegiance to Communism. When Richard Wurmbrand refused to

do so, he was imprisoned for a total of 14 years. He later founded Voice of the Martyrs, an organization that helps Christians who are persecuted fortheir faith. Wurmbrand urged believers to maintain an eternal perspective on earthly sufferings: When you were a child, you might have sat on asmall stool and looked at your mothers embroidery. From your point of view, it was a confusion of zigzags, knots and loose threads. Then yourmother, to help you understand, turned the embroidery (over) so you could see and appreciate the design. You must stop looking on the wrong sideof things.

Live your hearts to heavenly places and look down upon events from (that) vantage point. You will see lifes temporary sufferings as agathering of pearls and jewels with which we will be adorned in eternity.

Jerry Miles and I are in the early stages of planningan ongoing series of symposiums designed to offer a forum forthe FHPC family to discuss these issues we cant talk about

in church. Youve seen my list: whats yours?I invite you to email me ([email protected]) orvisit with either Jerry or me to suggest topics as you see fit. Then watch upcoming issues ofIn Touch and The Weekly forthe schedule of our conversations.

If we are to respond to our calling to be Christs wit-nesses to the world (Acts 1:8), we need to share views andideas with one another in order to more fully explore what ourLord would have us say.

Perhaps in the power of the promised Holy Spirit wecan learn to talk about those things we dare not talk about.

From our Pastor...continued from page 1Potato ChipsA little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was along trip to where God lived, so he packed his suit-case with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of rootbeer and started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an oldwoman. She was sitting in the park, just staring atsome pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and

opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beerwhen he noticed that the old lady looked hungry, so he offered her somechips. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was sopretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer.Again, she smiled at him.

The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As twilight approached, the boy realizedhow tired he was and he got up to leave; but before he had gone morethan a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gaveher a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, hismother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him,"What did you do today that made you so happy? "He replied, "I hadlunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You

know what? She's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!"

Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked,"Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?" She replied!"I ate potato chips in the park with God." However, before her son re-sponded, she added, "You know, he's much younger than I expected."

fact all of you were so involved in providing this creativeway to share the love of God , to invite kids to be aware ofGod in the midst of every day life and to follow Jesus. One lives the truths emphasized in VBS while preparingfor the VBS week. This year was no different.I personally had several times of standing strong by de-pending on God to reveal who he might have for a leaderor to work out details or to discover ways flowing todeeper relationships. Gods love does help us stand strong

in the midst of daily life through love, faith in Jesus, friends & family, prayer, and scripture!

At this time we will have concluded our 3rd VBS. TheSpirit has brought us to full capacity of children before wehave begun! As a congregation you have graciously andgenerously provided, supplies, food, prayers, time, and a host of othersupport. The VBS teamis so overwhelmed thatwe just are not sure howto say thank you for com-ing together in such a

Your mission fund-raising dollars at work!

FH Presbyterian Church will be sending with me, Tyson Robinson and four youth: Jacob Eberspacher, Andrey Lull, Sean

Nangle, and Trey Uphoff to the Presbyterian Youth Trienniumthis summer. Over 5000 teens will gather for worship, smallgroups, music, drama, relationships, and missions around theTheme I AM. If that isnt enough fun there is lots of funalso planned as some teens will get their first taste of campuslife and small group ministry.

We are honored to have Andrey be a part of the choir andJacob and Trey ( as youth elders) to serve communion at thisevent. Tyson will participate with the small groups as Debbycontinues the leadership track and also has a small group ofladies. This happens only once in every three years. Howexciting for some of our youth to experience the greater Pres-

byterian Church and body of Christ! Please pray for safety awe fly and shuttle, as well as ourhearts to be open and receptive towhat God has for each and all ofus.

If God is this great I AM, thenhow shall we as youth and lead-ers now live as we return toFountain Hills? Watch for theinterviews next month!

    Messiahs Light

Jesus words about the darkness were used to explain the anger, jealousy and

lack of joy that often occupies the typical heart of man. It is a condition he wants

to change. Even with a lighthouse beacon, a lantern or a powerful flashlight, He

knows that we will stumble around in the darkness of this world until we allow

    Him to light the way.

Why I stopped attending Sports events

Every time I go, they ask for money. The people I have to sit with dont seem friendly. The seats are too hard and uncomfortable. The coach never visits me.The referee makes decisions I disagree with.I sit near some hypocrites; they only come to see what others are wearing. Some games go into overtime, so Im late getting home.

The band plays some music I havent heard before. The games are scheduled when I want to do other things. My parents took me to too many games when I was growing up.I read a book on sports, so I know more than the coaches do anyhow.I want my kids to choose for themselves what sport they like best.

Looks at Psalm 23 by Phillip Keller. The author trulyunderstands the meaning of the psalm because like thepsalm writer David, he has been a shepherd himself. Therole of the Shepherd in the lives of sheep; leader, com-forter, caregiver, provider, protector, and owner bringsrich spiritual insights to Jesus role in the life of the be-liever. The parallels are insightful, moving, and pro-foundly relevant to the Christian experience.

Psalms of Lamentby Ann Weems draws from Psalms to

give voice through poetry of the grief and anguish theauthor felt over the death of her son.

Psalms for Young Children by MarieDelval is a collection of Psalms para-phrased for young readers (ages 4-8)using simple yet powerful imagery tohelp children understand the mes-sages found in some of the Psalms.

The Music Ministry is survivingthe heat! Musical people are com-

ing and going from their vacationsand summer jaunts, sharing withus their personal expression andstyle of music that has become theheart of this music ministry; then, heading out of town again! Weare truly grateful that God hasblessed so many with their musicalgifts.

I have been spending manydays, and many more to come

this summer, with Dorothy in our music library. This is acontinuation of last summers efforts when weba refined organization of anthems and instrumental mu-sic, with a new labeling and categorical system. With Doro-thy's librarian background, she's amazing to work with. Ilove handling the music, re-circulating the familiar pieces ofpast years in with the newer arrangements that keep our mu-sic ministry the blended style it has been for solong. Dorothy and I are constantly in conversation aboutmusical qualities and style. The question has never been assimple as to whether it's contemporary or traditional, butleans more to whether it's useful now or useful later. Wehave been known to speak musical relevance 8 hoursstraight, with people wondering what we have to talk aboutso long. It's a great working with Dorothy. She,along with our fabulous organist, Caryl, are both such hard-

working, progressive, and faithful musicians. They never cease in keeping the quality of music in thischurch to the highest standard, consistently offering a blendof styles and unique arrangements that fill the sanctuary withworshipful music Sunday after Sunday. We certainly valuethem.

The summer VBS was a great time! We are nurtur-

ing the young, and trying to give their place in churchthe full value that they deserve. It was wonderful tosee young ones dancing, along with the "not soyoung", and hear the children play the drums "finally"to the beat of the music, and to hear songs that havebeen in our church repertoire for so longbe transformed into songs that penetrate andmerge with the language of young ones today. It willalways be a defining step in the growth of ourchurch. It takes much effort, but, they are so worth it.

As we look forward to the continued summermonths, and the special music it brings, wecan anticipate even further the season of fall when theCelebration Singers, Celebration Ringers, CelebrationYouth, and Pearwood Recorders all re-enter worship, moving into another season of this important and vitalworship of God, through music, joined by all.

Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Spotlight . Did you know?Hissler FamilyWe are a German family, all born in Germany. Well that wastrue, when we came to Arizona 5 years ago, because of course

our youngest son Samuel was born only later in Scottsdale.Christian and I grew up in very small towns in Germany right onthe French border. Forest, little villages and the French lifestylemust be in our blood. We both went to school and University inGermany. Christian wanted to become a math teacher. I believehe would never have thoughtbefore to work for a softwarecompany named SAP, beinga software architect and be-ing sent to the United States.Just in case you are wonder-ing what a software architectdoes: I think you guessedwell, they create the designof software for companies,

just like a house architectcreates the design of a newhouse that has to be built fora customer with specificwishes. Christians office isin downtown Scottsdale. Herides his bike to work. InGermany we would say herides even with wind andweather (that means actuallyrain) here we would rathersay with sun and more sun.We both first met at a swimteam at university.I studied Biogeography,

which is best described as environmental science, and really Iwas looking a little sad in the water, but a friend encouraged methat I could learn how to swim quite fast and so I went to thisswim team. I learned how to swim lets say faster, but more im-portant for my later life: Christian and I met there. When I stud-ied for some semester in Italy he rode 500 miles over the Alps tosee me and this is how we started dating and later got married. We just had our 15th anniversary. We had a lot of varieties in our 15 years of marriage. We movedmany times especially for Germans, who are not into moving. Iremember when we bought our little house in Primstal,a tiny village with 2400 people, we burned all moving boxes inour backyard, even though you are not allowed to do this. But wepromised to ourselves not to move again. Still 3 years later onour way back from a beautiful summer vacation on the AtlanticOcean we started to discuss how exciting it would be to goabroad. Back at work a day later Christian was asked if he wouldlike to go to Arizona, for 15 months with family: a move to Ari-zona! By then we had already three children. Charlotte was two,Johanna was about to start school and David was ten. We justhad enough time to teach them the words bathroom and GoodMorning.I believe I speak for all of us when I say this was something thatyou could call a life changing experience: it was a blind datewith the United States.I never was anywhere else then traveling through or living inEurope. Christian had more travel experience than me but otherthan living in Germany or studying a year in Rome, this movewas ... I do not know, was it an adventure, was it scary?

I still remember the first morning when we arrived in Scottsdale,

our first house, there were bunnies hopping in the garden and ourchildren pushed their noses against the windows and were all ex-cited about the bunnies, while I went to the kitchen and when I was

preparing my coffee I looked to the other side of the garden andthere it was: a wolf (I thought) A wolf in my backyard. I wasready to pack and escape. I did not know that it was a coyote and Idid not know how close nature is here. It took us all a while tounderstand how rich in wildlife a desert can be and two years agowe moved to Fountain Hills, really ready to experience the desert,

even though we probably willnever become friends withscorpions though. Since I haveaccomplished my Montessoricertificates for preschool andelementary school I found a

job as a Montessori teacherhere and David started HighSchool.

In our first summer in Foun-tain Hills I enrolled all threechildren in FountainHills Presbyterian ChurchVacation Bible School. I wasoverwhelmed by the warmwelcome, open mind and kindpeople we met there. We lovethe second service on Sun-days, I like that there is a ser-vice where we can go all to-gether. There is space for allof us and I mean of course the

space to find something for allour so different in age minds.

My children join youth group on Wednesdays and we get involvedslowly more and more in the church life.

If you ask about crazy things we did. I do not know if I did any-thing really crazy. At least I did not think it was crazy when I did itas a young girl, only later. I always loved animals and I was hidingworms and snails under my bed in a box and I remember that I hada little watering can to water them every day, because the soil driedout so fast. I do not know what I would do if I would find todayworms under my children's beds. But my mom never found thisout (well, you never really know with moms!), but when I savedlittle mice from a fair and let them run in the attic, well my momfound out that! Of course the mice had many babies and you couldhear them chewing and scratching in the night. I was in big troubleand had to catch all mice and let them go free in the woods. Backthen I thought that was crazy, they were white.....

I remember that David did something funnier when he was little. Iexplained to him that we use sunscreen because we have to protectour skin from the sun rays, so in some unobserved moments he putsunscreen all over our cat. Charlotte has a book that is very funny. It is called: Bad Kitty Gets a Bath, from Nick Bruel. When I read itI thought it was my story.Christian and I hope both that we have the most positive influenceon our children. And I believe they have the most impact on us. Ilove having children, they battle your doors and you respond, theyask and you answer, they are there, fully and true and this givesvery true moments that feel so much alive, and that makes you feelalive. We feel very blessed to have found our church and to me some-

times it even feels like the church did find us.

    Hospitalized? Call the church!

Ifyou are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from ill-ness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a con-gregation like ours where people leave in droves for extendedsummer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to

assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simplyvacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick andwe are not aware of it.You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know ofyour situation. We have an excellent support system in placedue to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve youby communicating your situation.

    Dear Church Family!

I am so very grateful for the help, support and hugs from my church family during Tonyscancer battle and death.

It is a blessing to be a part of such a warm and consider-ate and loving church family.

You mean so much to me. I thank God for each and

    every one of you.
