J ULY 2012 XLIV 7vol. no.

We’re thrilled to unveil the first issue of Canton Inc., our new economic development publication, produced through collaboration between the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and GateHouse Ohio Media, parent company of The Repository.

Inside, you’ll find that Canton Inc. highlights examples of business and economic development activities in greater Canton/Stark County, showcasing all that’s positive about the pro-business landscape of our region.

Our cover story is all about energy, and it’s no wonder why. Stark County already has established itself as a center for energy in the development of wind power and fuel cells, as well as in our nearly endless fresh water supply. And now, Canton, Ohio, has recently

been branded The Utica Capital™, as oil and gas exploration in the region’s Utica Shale deposits could affect every aspect of business here. By showcasing the diverse and innovative business arena here in Canton, through rich business features and highlights on education, transportation, health care, quality of life and more, we hope to attract new businesses, increase business growth and change the local perception of our region.

We encourage you to read and to pass along copies of Canton Inc., especially to those outside our region. We are currently in the process of distributing more than 6,000 copies through our economic development partners, site selectors and other entities that can help us entice businesses of all sizes to choose our region for doing business.

Please go online to www.CantonChamber.org/canton-inc-magazine to view an online copy of the magazine. If you would like to obtain a copy of Canton Inc., please contact Jessica Bennett, director of marketing for the Canton Regional Chamber, at [email protected].

The fourth annual Fishers Foods Taste of Canton, presented by Schulman Zimmerman & Associates—a food festival held in the heart of downtown Canton on May 23 AND 24—left no empty bellies, but plenty of attendees are already hungry for next year’s event!

More than 20 restaurants served up delicious dishes at the event, and downtown Canton

never tasted so good! This year’s foodie fun was twice as nice with two-times the tasting fun.

Thanks again to our partner, The Repository, and our generous sponsors: Fishers Foods, Schulman Zimmerman & Associates, Sugardale, Chef Jon Molnar, Smucker’s, Lipari, Superior Dairy and Canton Chair Rental.

ystark!, Stark County’s young professional initiative and a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, has announced that Eric

Smer has joined the staff as the new ystark! director.

Smer will lead the organization in its mission of attracting, retaining and most importantly, engaging Stark County young professionals. His work for ystark! will include managing networking and social events, professional development efforts, service and volunteer opportunities,

along with expanding ystark!’s role in entrepreneurial engagement and economic development.

Smer joins ystark! from the Stark County Hunger Task Force, where he served as special projects coordinator, program director and ultimately executive director for the organization. Smer is an honors program graduate of Kent State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business management. He also obtained a Certificate in Supervisory Leadership from The University of Akron.

In addition to his involvement with the Stark County Hunger Task Force and ystark!, including participation on the education and service committees, Smer is an active volunteer with organizations throughout the county. Past and current service roles include volunteering for The Canton Palace Theatre and Grace United

Church of Christ, as well as Senior Employment Center (advisory board member), Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival (ribs committee member), Plain Township Rotary (new generations committee member), North Canton Jaycees (2012 Jaycee Fair committee chairman), Kent State University Alumni Association Stark

Chapter (lifetime member and board member) and Friends of Plain Township Parks (founding board member).

Smer has received many awards in his career to date, including recognition at ystark!’s own fifth annual ‘Twenty under 40!’ awards, presented June 5 at Glenmoor Country Club.

“Eric brings an immense background in fundraising, grant procurement, strategic planning and marketing to the organization,” said Dennis P. Saunier, president and CEO for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We’re looking forward to the growth of ystark! under his leadership.” Candidates for the director position were vetted by a search committee, comprised of Chamber staff, local community leaders and members of ystark!’s executive committee.

Editor’s note: In keeping with the ystark!’s mission—to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County—ACTION will feature a monthly profile of an

individual who represents the group (ages 20-40) that ystark! is targeting.

Name: Sarah Finley

Age: 23

Occupation/Title/Place of work: Docent at the National First Ladies’ Historic Site and National First Ladies’ Library

Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I think it’s wonderful that there’s an institution in place that is encouraging and inviting to the younger generation of professionals. There is so much potential here in Canton from this age group and I love that ystark is striving to encourage and grow that.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? After attending my first ystark event, I decided to join. The sense of youth and community was so exciting to me!

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up mainly in Magnolia and have worked primarily in Canton, with brief job experience in New Philadelphia.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton? I don’t currently live in Canton. I’m still living in Magnolia for the time being. I hope to relocate within the year once I have some money saved up!

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? From the small amount of looking I’ve done and from visiting friends who live in and around the Canton area, I would say the housing options for YPs are fair, but I honestly wish there were better options closer to downtown.

What do you like MOST about Canton? The people and all the amazing history!

What do you like LEAST about Canton? The bad attitude and negativity! Canton has so much potential. We just need to get more people on board and we need to destroy the negative connotations that surround Canton.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I’ve come to realize that there are many opportunities for community involvement and leadership, between the Chamber and various community charities. As far as cultural access and career opportunities, I feel we are lacking and this is something that is a cause of frustration for many YPs.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Downtown nightlife throughout the week, more art and music events that are tailored to a younger age group. I do think First Friday

is really starting to hit its groove in this area and needs to keep at it!

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I spend a lot of time at either Muggswigz or the Auricle in downtown Canton. I’m honestly so thankful that the Auricle is here. I think a trendy, eclectic venue was one of the things that Canton was in desperate need of.

What would you change about Canton if you could? I would try to create a greater awareness of the local museums, the cultural arts center and the symphony. We have a lot of potential but most people aren’t interested or don’t know that they have access to these wonderful resources.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I’m honestly not sure! Probably not my entire lifetime, because there are so many places I want to visit and things I want to see and do, but for the time being I enjoy it here!

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I am hoping to attend graduate school within the next year so that will probably be my main reason for leaving the area. Larger cities like Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles are a huge draw for me right now, based on their art, museum, and music scenes.

Canton is widely revered as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which means that it is also home to a truly One of a Kind Celebration—the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival!

For the past 49 years, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to host the annual Enshrinement Festival. A unique partnership between these two community organizations, the professional staffs and more than 4,200 extraordinary volunteers work year-round in a true spirit of cooperation to plan the festivities which surround the central focus of the celebration—the enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame—totaling 273 with the addition of the Class of 2012 Enshrinees.

Since opening the museum on September 7, 1963, and the Enshrinement of the inaugural class of 17 football heroes, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has completed multiple expansions and improvements. The most recent is currently underway, and will provide an expanded fan experience as well as state-of-the-art preservation of historical artifacts.

The project is aptly named The “Future 50” Project because its completion in 2013 will coincide with our 50-year celebration and provide the foundation for continued success in the next 50 years!

So you’re not a football fan? No worries! The 19 Enshrinement Festival events over two weeks are unique and diverse and will please all ages and interests. Your experience includes food, fashion, fireworks, fun and much, much more, including parades, races, concerts and food fests. Some events are ticketed, many are free, and all offer tons of fun!
