FROM THE PASTOR

How Can You Have an Ignatian Summer?

Matt Emerson at The Ignatian Educator (America Magazine) suggests the following tips for an Ignatian summer. The article is well worth reading in full, but today we expand on several of his points with links for further inspiration to pursue an Ignatian summer.

Engage in spiritual direction. Emerson asks, “If we took an x-ray of our souls, what would we find?” A spiritual director can help us take that x-ray.

Engage in spiritual reading. IgnatianSpirituality.com is sponsored by Loyola Press, so of course, we agree with the suggestion of spiritual reading. Read the daily dotMagis blog posts or choose a new book.

Contemplate the heavens. A video is no substitute for going outside and contemplating God’s creation, but if you can’t get outside this moment, you might like the video Since Ignatius Liked to Look Up at the Sky. Then plan some time to contemplate creation first-hand.

Join the company of the marginalized. This might be the time to pursue a new volunteer opportunity or learn more about people on the margins. Lisa Kelly suggests our response might begin with A Change of Preposition.

Go on a pilgrimage. The next few months might provide time for sacred travel, whether to an official pilgrimage destination or one of personal significance. If you do undertake a pilgrimage, be aware of all the accompanying experiences and kindnesses you encounter.

Having said all that, and perhaps before all that, give your summer to God.

Emerson concludes: “The opening line of Ignatius’s Suscipe reads, ‘Take, Lord, receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess.’ Starting with your summer plans, give it back to God. Before you do anything else, ask God to take your liberty, your memory, your understanding and your will.”

The RCIA program is led by a team who will help guide program participants through the faith journey. In addition, participants have individual sponsors to pray with, and to discuss topics throughout the many months of learning & discovering. For those considering becoming Catholic, please call the parish office to speak with Fr. Eric.

In a “low whisper” God called Elijah. Your call may come as a question or maybe it will come as a stirring when you read this announcement: “Teachers are needed for Wednesday evening English and Sunday morning Spanish Children’s Faith Formation classes beginning this Fall!”

Just a few reasons to answer the call: 1) The best way to learn is to teach; 2) Your own faith will come alive; 3) You assist in bringing Christ to others; 4) You practice stewardship; 5) You show your family the value of the Faith.

THANK YOU

I would like to THANK everyone who helped the Children’s Faith Formation Program during the Parish Festival. The parents, teachers and students who volunteered to work the games and relays, know that I am grateful for every step taken; every minute spent entertaining the children of this parish!! I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that the addition of prizes for the relays, the watermelon eating contest and the bounce houses were a big hit this year! Special thanks to Laura Luster and her family, Fr. Eric for agreeing to compete, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market for donating the watermelons, and to Gonzalez Jumpers for donating one of the bounce houses! —Renae Magana

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

So many times in my life, I have failed to start something because I had not yet adequately prepared. I would have started working out or going for a jog, but I needed to get the right shoes. I would have started eating right if only I could find the time and money to buy the right foods. I would have started that journaling project, but I couldn’t without a really nice leather-bound journal. I would have, I would have, and I would have! I know many people can relate. We offer up excuses for so many things. Sometimes we even get to the point where we do start something, but by then, we have already lost so much time. Some of us are thinking about taking a stewardship way of life seriously, but we are just not ready yet. We would be more generous if we can first get out of debt. We would give of our time, but we have to wait until the kids get older or until we fully research our options. The truth is, we don’t have to be in any particular state of life or have any specific financial portfolio to start giving our very selves to God. God takes us as we are now. No resume needed. Why waste so much time thinking about getting started and becoming serious? Time is a gift given to all of us. As we think and prepare endlessly, we are practicing poor stewardship. The time to start is today. Who wants to answer God one day at the gates of Heaven saying, “I would have, but…”? —Tracy Welliver, MTS

GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR JULY 14TH

Loving isn’t too difficult, right? Many of us are surrounded by kind, lovely people trying to do the right thing. Indeed, to “love your neighbor as yourself” seems like it should be easy enough. Treat people like you would like to be treated. Bring the new neighbors some baked goods (normal and gluten-free, just in case). Chat with the bank teller about his holiday weekend. Write an occasional card to your sister “just because.” There were probably varieties of these acts of kindness in Jesus’ day. Perhaps substituting figs for cookies. But “exchanging pleasantries with the traveling cloth merchant” isn’t the example Jesus gives. “A man fell victim to robbers... they stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.” The righteous passed by the scene of the dying man. The hero of the story is the one on the margins of Jewish society, who perhaps would not have been welcomed, in other circumstances, by the man now in the ditch. His neighborly love causes him to halt his journey, to tend wounds, and to pay for the man's care out of his own savings. Are we interruptible? Are we attentive to the hurts of others? Are we generous with our money and possessions? In the past few weeks, who has crossed your mind as someone in need of help? Perhaps it’s an acquaintance suffering from cancer. Maybe you were invited to donate or volunteer to a local social cause, but it just won’t stick in your mind (or schedule) to make it happen. The needs of people are many and varied. We can’t help everyone, but God does place opportunities in our path for compassion and courageous love. This week, be “the one who treated him with mercy.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

For Children: Name a time when you showed your love for your family or friends during the past week or two. For Youth: Who are the strangers who you could reach out and help in the coming week or month? How will you respond? For Adults: How will you love God this week? How will you love your neighbor this week? How will you love yourself this week?
