Before Julius was born, Lilly was the best big sister in the world.

She gave him things.

She told him secrets.

And she sang lullabies to him every night.

After Julius was born, it was a different story.

Lilly took her things back.

She pinched his tail.

And she yelled insulting comments into his crib.

“I am the queen,” said Lilly. “And I hate Julius.”

Teacher’s Notes

Thank you for purchasing this packet! Activities in this packet are designed to motivate children to dig deeper into the story. The philosophy at K2 Printables is that children learn best through activities designed to keep them actively reading, writing, and solving problems. Below are explanations of the activities along with extension ideas. Julius Baby Rattle

This adorable baby rattle gives students an opportunity do demonstrate their understanding of the problem and its solution. I have included a rattle with space for a student to draw his/her favorite part. This page is suitable for kindergarten and early first graders.

o Version 1 Copy it on white cardstock and ask children to color with crayons or markers.

o Version 2 Copy the rattle circle on white copy paper. Once students have colored and finished the written activity, glue two cheap paper

plates together. Leave a one-inch section open for inserting the handle. Use a craft stick, small dowel section or an unsharpened pencil for the handle. Glue the rattle circle onto the paper plate, insert a small handful of dried beans to

make it rattle and glue in the handle. Thinking about What We Read • This comprehension activity is a great way to check students’ understanding of language from the

text. Its recommended use is as a follow up independent or partner activity after several discussions/reading of the book.

Describe Julius • In this comprehension activity, students are referred to the text to compare Lilly’s describing of

Julius with her parents’ description. This is a great way to strengthen reading for information skills. • Use it as an independent activity to follow a guided reading lesson, or as a partner activity. The Boy/Girl of the World • Thinking and writing about personal traits:

o Copy the person pattern on cardstock or construction paper. (You can also print several tracers and have students trace it on multicultural paper.)

o Ask students to decorate the person pattern to look like them. They could color it with markers or crayons, or cut out clothes (paper doll style) to complete it.

o Discuss Lilly’s personal traits. This activity is a good follow-up to the Lilly, the Mouse of the World activity page.

o Ask students to complete the graphic organizer before they write about being the boy/girl of the world.

o Glue the writing piece and illustrated person to an 18” X 12” piece of construction paper for displaying on bulletin boards or in the hallway. Attach the mini banner as a title to the center of the construction paper.

o There is also a page for writing about The Baby of the World, which could be Julius or a sibling.

My Brother/My Sister Graphic Organizer • These graphic organizers help students to strengthen text-to-self connections. It could be used as

a homework activity or class work. • If you want students to write about a sibling, use the lined writing page that accompanies the writing

prompt. • Ask students to draw a picture of their sibling in the center of the graphic organizer.

o Extensions Instead of drawing a picture of the sibling, ask students to bring a snapshot from

home. Have a sharing time for students to read their pieces about their sibling. If the

sibling attends your school, invite them to visit during the sharing time. Make a class chart of the words used to describe the siblings. Refer to this chart

during your writing block to remind students to use rich language to describe characters.

This is a great way to build vocabulary skills! Writing Prompt • If your district assesses writing using writing prompts, this prompt will be great practice for your

students. • Follow your district’s protocol for administering writing prompts. • Duplicate the prompt directions, graphic organizer page and writing page for each student. • Use your district’s assessment tool to assess the writing. • Two lined writing pages are included – one is appropriate for K-1 and the other is appropriate for

2-3. Lilly, the Mouse of the World • Use this graphic organizer to examine Lilly’s personality traits. • Consider having a students read sections of the text while others demonstrate Lilly’s actions

Word Making • The word making activity is designed to use with your Making Words letter cards.

Lilly’s Crown • Duplicate the crown on yellow cardstock or construction paper. • Attach to a sentence strip and staple as a headband for students. They love wearing their crowns

as they read and discuss the story. • The crowns can be used as nametags beside each student’s Boy/Girl of the World work, also.
