Throughout the year, residents express a desire to give their PAL, nurse or wait staff or housekeeper a token of appreciation. I am so glad you are happy with their services. And if you haven’t made a donation and wish to, the deadline is Tuesday, Dec. 17. For many people, December is filled with trips to the shopping mall to buy holiday gifts. For those with balance disorders, the thought of shopping malls and the dizzy spells they bring on can be frightening. While some people with balance disorders avoid shopping malls altogether and shop online instead, doctors usually can successfully treat the condition. Several diseases and disorders can contribute to balance problems, and treating the underlying problem can improve or cure the balance disorder. Doctors also can refer patients to a specialist who can design a personalized program of balance-retraining exercises involving head and body movements. Scientists continue to work toward a better understanding of balance disorders and test new treatments. For example, the National Institute of Health’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders granted an award to the University of Pittsburgh to create a virtual environment to teach people with balance disorders how to adapt to complex environments. If you have balance concerns, take a list of symptoms to your next doctor visit, along with a list of all your medications, so he or she can best assess your condition. Holiday celebrations often include travel plans. If you’re traveling this holiday season, make sure we know how to reach you and that the information for your emergency contact is up to date. It is also a good idea to ask a neighbor or friend to collect your mail and keep an eye on your home so you can enjoy a relaxing and worry-free holiday vacation. We wish each and every one of you peace and joy this holiday season. Sincerely, Judith Uy-Villaruz Executive Director

Tips From Nerissa:

It’s the Holidays! Yum!

It is that time of year again whenwe start celebrating the holidays, and often, that means eating all

those delicious foods we’ve cometo expect and love-in abundance.

After all, you may only get them atthis time of year.

However, as one gets older, theirmetabolism slows and they don’tneed as much food to maintain

good health.

Following are some tips to helpyou enjoy all the fabulous foodsthat the holidays offer, without

experiencing the effects that thosefoods can have on you.

Continue to drink plenty of water.Water not only helps to flush

toxins and cleanse the body, but ithelps to make you feel full if you

drink some prior and duringthe meal.

Avoid heavy meals, especially atnight. Instead of taking a nap aftera large indulgence of food, take astroll. It helps with digestion and

just feels good.

Maintain your sleep pattern.Often, we end up staying up much

later than usual, but this can wearon the body and will make you

feel more fatigued during qualitytime with friends and relatives.

Watch the salt and carbohydrateintake. Who doesn’t love a good

roll or two? Enjoy a little, butrealize that overindulgence of

both of these things can lead topain and swelling in joints and

muscles.

Lastly, enjoy the time you havewith friends and family during

this special time! Qualityrelationships and sharing of our

lives is what it is all about and thisseason is a wonderful time to

experience that. Happy Holidays!

Circle of FriendsNews!

BEWARE ... Pirates EVERYWHERE!!

The Circle of Friends had anamazing Halloween! We used

much of our arts and craftstime to construct our pirate

shirts.

In case you missed ourSpooktacular, we were the

gang of pirates! We marchedwith red and white striped

shirts, swords, eye patches andbandanas! A few of the Circle

members even wore fakemustaches and beards! If you

heard a bunch of “aye mateys”and “arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrs”

coming from the Circle ofFriends room, we were just

getting into character! We arealready planning our

costumes for next year.

Last year we were hippies, thisyear pirates, who knows whatwe will think up for next year!

Stay tuned . . .

Neighborhood News!A big thank you to all of those who participated

in our fundraising efforts for the Alzheimer’sAssociation. With combined efforts from our

“casual for a cause” campaign and a garage sale,we raised over $500 for Alzheimer’s research.Since the “Casual for a cause” campaign wassuch a popular event with our employees, wewill be continuing it next year. Our employeesjoined other Los Angeles employees and familymembers affected by Alzheimer’s on Nov. 3 in

Century City. It was an incredible upliftingexperience for all involved.

Are YOU aSAGITTARIUS?!?!?!?!

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21)Symbolized by The Archer andruled by Jupiter, the Sagittarian

lives life to their fullest. Optimismis their eternal strength, so playingthe game of life with no limits is

easy since the Sagittarian is willingto play big and fail colossally aspart of the game. Fortunately,

your gambling instincts tend to bespot-on, and Jupiter makes you

legendarily lucky.

Independent and adventurous, your sign rules travel, publishing

and entrepreneurial ventures.Being your own boss gives yougreat pleasure, especially if youcan hop around the globe and

document your experiences in theprocess. A true student of life, your mind is ever hungry for

knowledge and new experiences. You remain on the cutting edge of

social change and avant-gardeideas until old age. You’re

energetic and athletic, and mayhave legendary legs like ArchersTina Turner, Britney Spears and

Jamie Lee Curtis. Honesty is a traityou prize dearly, but watch where

you sling your own arrows of“truth.” You tend toward

tactlessness and may easily offendwith your well-meaning

comments.

In romance, you want to lovepassionately and fully. Your

tendency to put partners up on apedestal (along with your fierce

independence) can make it toughto settle down. When the

inevitable low tide flows in, youstart looking to distant ports.

Once you learn to accept the ebband flow of relationships, you

may discover that you have moreoptions than you know what to

do with.
