“Oy Es Dia De Placer” Tomas Pascual (1595-‐1635)
Oy es dia de placer y de cantar. Via todos a bailar. Today is a day for pleasure and singing. Come everyone and dance Regozamos este-dia por ser de tan placer. We rejoice this day for the sake of pleasure. Pues, in El tenemos que buen misterios de gran alegria! Therefore, in Him, we have such mysteries of great joy! “The Winter’s Night” Words and Music by Nicholas Myers “Carol of the Bells” Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovich (1877-‐1921) Like many popular carols, this melody has evolved from secular folk origins. Also known as the “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” Leontovich’s miniature choral work uses a four-‐note ostinato motif taken from an ancient pagan Ukrainian chant called “Shchedryk” (“The Generous One”). The original lyrics describe a swallow calling out to the master of the house with good news of a bountiful spring. “Shchedryk” was usually sung by adolescent girls going house to house in celebration of the new year. As the girls sang the tune predicting good fortune, they were rewarded with baked goods or other treats.
“Angelus ad Virginem” 13th Century Carol, arranged by Philip Lawson This carol has remained popular for over 700 years. Its medieval Latin text tells of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, where the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will conceive and bear Jesus. It concludes with a poetic version of the “Hail Mary,” where humankind praises Mary and asks for her to intercede on their behalf. Philip Lawson is a Grammy-‐award winning composer and arranger who performed with the Kings Singers for 18 years, during which time he arranged most of the group’s music. He now devotes himself full-‐time to music composition.
“O Come All Ye Faithful” attributed to John Francis Wade (c. 1711-‐1786) “They Kept on Praising His Birth” by Patsy Ford Simms Soloists: Ezra Taves and Jonas Pagé
”Patapan” Bernard de La Monnoye (1621-‐1728) This French carol originally was sung in the Burgundian dialect. Today it is sung in many other languages as well, where it always receives onomatopoetic treatment to imitate the sounds of the fife (turaluralu) and drum (patpan). “Joy to the World” melody from George Frederick Handel (1685-‐1759)
“O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Laurisden
O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum O great mystery and wondrous sacrament Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praeseptio! That animals should see the new-born Lord, lying in their manger! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt Dominum Christum. Alleluia! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia! “Silent Night” Franz Xavier Gruber (1787-‐1863)
