Principal’s Message:
It is hard to believe that we have completed the first quarter. We are looking forward to seeing many of you at
parent-teacher conferences this week. Here is the schedule of this year’s conference times:
Wednesday, November 7st, 5:00pm-8:30pm
Thursday, November 8nd, 1:00pm-4:00pm
Thursday, November 8nd, 5:00pm-8:30pm
Friday, November 9rd, 8:00am-11:00am
Parents of all students may schedule a conference by going to the following website:
http://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Harding_Midddle_School
or by using the Parent/Teacher Conference link available on the Harding Middle School page of Lakewood
city Schools website at www.lakewoodcityschools.org. Once you’ve registered, you will receive an email with
a link to the Conference schedule where you will be able to select your specific dates and times. Please call
216-227-5785 for assistance if you do not have a valid email address.
This is an important time for teachers to be able to share with you the academic progress of your child. We
would love to see 100 percent participation in parent/teacher conferences. The partnership between home and
school is of critical importance.
Thank you to the Harding Middle School PTSA who hosted a great first quarter dance for our students on
October 19thh. It was fun to see many of our students enjoy the Halloween theme and participate in dressing up
for both the dance and the Student Council sponsored Halloween fund raiser.

SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
Winter is on its way and with that comes the possibility of school closings due to inclement weather. If schools are
closed, parents and guardians will be notified by phone call, email and texts via our Blackboard Connect notification
system. Other ways to find out about the schools’ status are listening to the local TV and radio stations, checking the
District web site at www.lakewoodcityschools.org, Facebook page at www.facebook/lakewoodcityschools.com and/or
Twitter account at www.twitter.com/lkwdschools. You can also call the District’s School Closing Hotline at 216-227-
5708.
I know parents sometimes disagree with the District’s decision to keep schools open during harsh weather. If this is the
case, parents always have the option to keep their child home. That day will be regarded as an excused absence for the
student and students will be allowed to make up any work missed. Please call your child’s school absence line to let the
school know your child will not be attending due to the weather.

The 6th Grade Team:
Mr. Avila-John Mrs. Emily Baker Mrs. Leslie Barnes Mrs. Mindy Bruening Mr. Ken Budic Mrs. Geraldine Hauer Mrs. Mary Lynn Janas Mr. Stephen Kerney Mrs. Amanda Kennedy Mr. Dan O’Brien Mrs. Teresa Rhinehalt Mr. Kevin Spooner Mrs. Pam Thompson Mrs. Donna Tomlin
Mrs. Barnes 6th Grade In science we have started our chemistry unit over Matter and Motion and have several labs planned. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History will be here on November 12th for a Matters of Science Assembly. This is for all sixth graders. This will help reinforce concepts we have been learning about and introduce content we will be learning about throughout the quarter. In language arts, students have been reading class novels while developing an awareness of narrator's point of view and identification of plot elements. Students have also been practicing five paragraph essay-writing skills in preparation for writing literary essays. 6th graders in Mrs. Thompson's ELA class have been participating in the Global Read Aloud 2018 with the novel Amal Unbound. Students enjoyed the mystery Flipgrid videos to solve the clues and find out that their partner class is in the San Francisco, CA area. They also have had fun getting to know the California students via a live Google Hangouts session. During the Google Hangout sessions, students have a lively conversation discussing the social issues and other features of the book.

Ms. Pollner - Language Arts - In October, students finished reading and discussing the novel
Refugee by Alan Gratz. Students wrote an essay comparing the experiences of the three
characters and are currently working on an essay tracing the development of the motifs of
invisibility and maturity. We also looked at the historical aspects of the novel and tied in
nonfiction articles about refugees. Next, we began a nonfiction reading unit using civil rights as
our theme. Please check progress book every night for information about the material covered
in class and any homework due dates. Please email or call me whenever you have any
questions or concerns. If students submit an entry for the PTSA Reflections contest (due
11/16), they can show it to me for extra credit for the second quarter. I look forward to seeing
you at conferences.
Mrs. Franks Language Arts - As the second quarter begins, we are starting our Civil Rights
unit. The students worked on a WebQuest based on the Reconstruction time period to help give
them background knowledge for our future readings. They are truly engaged in this unit. We will
be working on an informative essay based on some form of the Civil Rights unit. We also began
our Partner Book readings. The students were put into partners based on the book that they
chose. It will make for a more interesting discussion when both show an interest in the book.
There are many activities based on the book that they are reading-check out ProgressBook to
see what needs to be done and when. Please work with your student so they feel more
comfortable in standing up and sharing about a book they enjoyed. As with everything else,
practice makes perfect. Don't forget to sign up for conferences! Thank you for your continued
support from home.

Eighth Grade News
On Monday, October 29th, over one hundred 8th grade students traveled to Lorain County
Community College to view a production of "The Crucible" presented by The National Players. A
dedicated troupe of performers, the National Players are made up of only ten actors who double up
on roles as well as taking on roles as stage crew, lighting, and sound. Important themes represented
in "The Crucible" include trust, honesty, mob-mentality, and fear-mongering. These themes will carry
over in the Holocaust Unit the 8th grade will study later on this school year.
In Algebra 1, students determined the domain and range of different types of functions. They explored many examples of functions and identified the key features of the graphs. Next week, students will explore and find the slopes of parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and linear functions. In subsequent lessons, students will explore how changing the values in certain parts of a function affect its graph. In Math 8, students applied the Pythagorean Theorem to real-world situations involving right triangles. Next week, students will be presented with the proof of the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem, which requires an understanding of congruent triangles. In subsequent lessons, students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the distance between two points on the coordinate plane.
During the first week of November, you and your child will have the opportunity to take part in a student-involved conference. You and your child will have the opportunity to ask questions, express ideas, and help make intervention plans to enhance learning. Please visit the Harding Middle School website to choose times and days you and your child would prefer to hold the student-involved conference. It is important for us to work together as a team. See you at conferences!
Mrs. Gray's Algebra classes are moving along at a fast clip. We just completed a study of functions, including composite and inverse functions. Our next topic will be a quick review of linear equations since most of that was covered in pre-Algebra. We will be using the graphing calculators more and more, focusing now on the incredible details and information we can get from the calculators about linear equations and scatterplots. Midterm exams will be in December before Winter Break.
The Geometry classes finished up triangle congruence recently. We will be focusing on geometric proofs and segments within triangles next. We also studied transformations of geometrical figures, and soon will be working with dilations of figures since it corresponds to our unit on similarity. Just like the Algebra classes, Geometry will be taking midterm exams December just before Winter Break.
After studying the French and Indian War, social studies students are headed down the road to revolution! Disputes with Britain over settling land angered colonists, and taxes imposed by Britain led to further conflicts. Students will look at these issues as the colonists organize themselves leading to the American Revolution.

Feliz otoño
Our student teacher Miss Costello has moved to the high school and we are one week into the
2nd quarter. Please discuss with your child that is is important for them to set time aside each
day to look over past lessons and material we have learned. Learning a language includes
regular review and use of what was learned if the language is to be retained.
Second Q has started and we are going to learn more ideas faster than 1st Q. It is essential that
students keep up with notebook review at home on days when homework has not been
assigned.
By Thanksgiving, SP 1 students will have learned the simple past tense (the most difficult verb
tense for SP 1 and 2 students) in Spanish and will have to write sentences using the past tense
and food vocabulary during the break. It will be a journal where 50 words per day for three of
the five days will be typed. Thank you for your continuous support of your child’s learning! It is a
true pleasure to have student who are interested and eager to learn.
This Q is choppy with conference, Thanksgiving and Christmas so take sometime to discuss with
your child the need for extra diligence in keeping up and fulfilling academic goals and tasks.
Often some students tend to lose sight of the goal when starts and stops in the schedule occur.
Day of the Dead is Nov. 1 and 2. Kids worked on skull drawings in class and learned about the
traditions associated with that holiday.
Hasta luego.
