EARLY LEARNING SERVICES STAFF

Jordan Public Schools offers early childhood education and preschool opportunities for all families with children between the ages of birth to age five. We recognize that families provide children’s first and most important learning environments, and parents are children’s first and most significant teachers. Our Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) programs offer a variety of services and activities to bring families together to share the joys and challenges of parenthood while developing confidence in their own abilities. Our preschool programs ensure children enter kindergarten with the skills and behaviors necessary to be successful in future learning. We have had a wonderful start to the school year with many families taking advantage of our program enhancements such as busing, curbside drop off, snack cart, and additional class offerings. Our staff continues to strengthen the school experience for students while improving educational practices in a collaborative model utilizing district staff development opportunities. The Early Learning Services PTO continues to support our program, and we are very appreciative of their hard work. Most recently, we have enjoyed PTO’s funding of our preschool field trips including Luceline Orchard, Emma Krumbees, and Pinwheel Play. For general preschool or ECFE questions, please contact our ELS office at 952-492-3233.Sincerely,Jenna Wendorff Director, Early Learning Services

EARLY LEARNING INTERVENTIONS

Help Me GrowThe Jordan Public School District is one of six districts who are served through the HELP ME GROW-SCOTT COUNTY early intervention system for children ages Birth through five. HELP ME GROW-SCOTT COUNTY focuses on child and family strengths, needs and priorities. We recognize that your family is the first and best teacher of your child and that children learn best through play. We work to enhance and support your family’s knowledge as you help your child learn and develop throughout daily activities and routines.

This service is offered at no cost to the parent/care giver regardless of income or immigrant status and will provide information, support, and referral services to families of children with special needs. If you are concerned about your child’s growth, development, or learning, please call 492-4285.

Did You Know? The Jordan Public School believes that early education and interventions are the foundation of all learning. Along with our Parent Aware Rated preschool and ECFE

programs, we also offer early intervention services to families with children birth to Kindergarten, ensuring even our youngest

are reaching their milestones and receive help when extra help is needed.

Our Early Intervention staff will provide a system of services that help babies and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities. Based on the family needs and priorities, the school staff will help the family problem solve and give information and ideas of activities they can do to enhance play and daily routines. They also help to connect families with community resources and supports as needed. For more call (952) 492-4212.

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) Preschool Program provides learning experiences in all areas of development including social, self help, motor, communication, and cognitive skills. Children who have been identified with a developmental delay can benefit from many types of services within the ECSE classroom including speech, occupational, physical and vision therapies and assistive technology. ECSE services can also be provided in an inclusive setting within the regular preschool program offered in our Elementary School (Early Explorers Preschool). For more call (952) 492-4285.

Meredith Willson’s six-time, Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation. The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the

librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

SCHOOL DISTRICT THE LATEST

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL|Jordan Elementary School is having another amazing school year! Mindfulness is being practiced in every classroom, and we have implemented Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) practices into our school to meet the diverse needs of our students. Our staff has taken our J-Town Pride model (our PBIS framework) and added CRT language to help students and staff know what the expected, positive behaviors look, sound and feel like in all areas of the school. We are excited to see how this revised PBIS framework evolves at JES to offer the best social-emotional learning environment for staff, students, and families.

We are looking forward to welcoming our incoming Kindergarteners on April 2nd for our Countdown to Kindergarten! event. This is the follow-up event to our Kindergarten parent informational night, Welcome to Jordan Elementary! held on February 6th. Countdown to Kindergarten information can be found on our school website at jordan.k12.mn.us/countdowntok.

Finally, 200+ Kindergarten teachers from around the state will also be joining us in Jordan for the annual Minnesota Kindergarten Association Spring Conference on May 1st-2nd. More information about this conference can be found at mymka.org.

MIDDLE SCHOOL|Jordan Middle School is striving to meet the needs of all learners on a daily basis in and out of the classroom. This year, our school counselor (Mrs. Meyer) and our school social worker (Mrs. Rydberg) are working with all students on social emotional strategies including: mindfulness, self regulation, social skills, academic/college and career readiness. These skills are being taught individually, in small groups, and in the classroom to support students in all areas of their lives. Additionally, we have added a new elective class called REACH, to support students demonstrating a need for further support in these areas. REACH is an in-school program designed to help students academically, socially, and/or emotionally. The REACH Program not only supports these students academically, but also works to help them build life skills necessary for the future. The pillars of REACH are as follows: Relationships: A safe place for students to belong, connect, and cool off if needed. Education: Individualized academic assistance and assignment modifications as needed. Accountability: A support network with staff committed to helping students succeed while nurturing student responsibility. Character: Skill-building activities that encourage both positive academic and personal growth. Hard work: Students rise to the level of expectations.

As we move into the years ahead, we will continue to encourage each person’s gifts and talents to prepare students for Jordan High School and beyond.

Please watch for the Jordan School District survey that will go out to all district taxpayers and residents in late April or early May. The district is working with School Perceptions to ask district taxpayers to review the district’s needs and requests. Last November’s operating levy and bond referendum failed and we need to learn more about what our district residents supported and didn’t support in last fall’s referendum. We also need to have input on what taxpayers

may or may not support in the future. While we realize that the vote spoke for itself, the district has some significant financial and building needs. In the survey you will see the different components of the operating levy question and bond referendum questions broken down into smaller pieces. In addition, you will see tax tables and potential impacts should a future referendum be considered. We ask that you please complete this survey when it comes out to mailboxes. You’ll have the option to complete the survey online or via a paper copy. Your feedback will assist us in our future planning.

HIGH SCHOOL|In February Jordan High School hosted their first Career Day. This day gave students an opportunity to hear from 5 different community members about their career. Students were able to choose the professionals that they interacted with during this day. Over 20 different speakers shared stories about their career, the training involved, and other facets of the profession. The professions represented included welder, chiropractor, accountant, pilot, architect, doctor, photographer, musician, lab scientist, electric lineman, law enforcement, plumber, and more! This was a great opportunity for JHS juniors to hear about future careers prior to registering for classes for their senior year. A special thanks to Ms. Kusske and Ms. Whiteside for their organization of this event.

SCHOOL DISTRICT THE LATESTJHS holds its first Career Day – Welcoming over 20 different professions!

ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES|Jordan activities saw big changes in 2019-2020 in post season and section classification, and will have an even more noticeable change in 2020-2021 as we move to a new conference. Competitive sections are evaluated every two years by the Minnesota State High School League. As our district grows, we will continue to see change in Jordan’s classification. All Fine Arts have two classes, and Jordan is now considered an AA school. This means we just made the cut to be considered large enough to compete against the biggest schools in the state. Athletics were also affected as we saw six sports jump up a class (baseball, softball, football, tennis, track & cross country).

This bump in classification had us evaluating our conference affiliation. With Jordan clearly being the largest school in the Minnesota River Conference, it was decided to apply and eventually be accepted into the Wright County Conference starting fall of 2020. We will compete with schools similar or larger in enrollment, teams we will compete with in the playoffs. This was a difficult decision after spending 60+ years in the MRC, but we are excited and up for the challenge the Wright County Conference will present!

Insurance | Gretchen Rehm Doctor | Melissa Samuelson, MD Welder | Duane Judge

The district website and our smartphone app will have the latest calendar updates for each school and activities. Events on the calendar often have extra details worth checking out! With questions, contact Kat Pass, Communications and Marketing Director, at [email protected] or 952-492-4408.

NUTRITIONAL SERVICES|Nutritional Services conducted a student survey this past month to gather feedback from high school students on their interest in having a “Grab and Go” entree option during lunch. The results of the survey indicated that students would be very interested in having other options to chose from at lunch. In April we will be starting a “Grab and Go” station on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s in our high school and middle school that will offer different main entrees to choose from, other then the main lunch line offering. Items will include: pizza slices, hamburgers, chicken patty and tacos just to name a few. We were granted money from SHIP, Scott County Statewide Health Improvment Partnership, to purchase our new Grab and Go merchandizer stand that will be used for our new entree options at our high school. We are excited to bring more options to our secondary school students this spring and continue to strive to be creative in how we feed our students healthy meals each day.

SCHOOL DISTRICT THE LATESTTEACHING AND LEARNING|The 2019-2020 school year has been a year focused on standards based instruction, strengthening grading practices, and offering students opportunities to connect their classroom learning environments to personal passions through experiential learning. Education in the 21st century focuses on helping students connect classroom life to the world around them developing critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Through standards based instruction as a strong foundation, the district strives to create these innovative learners by offering authentic learning experiences connecting to life beyond the classroom walls. This focus will continue into next year by developing practices that allow students to wonder, explore, and achieve with the overarching goal of igniting a love for learning in our students.

SPECIAL SERVICES|In its 5th year of existence, the SOAR Transition Program has provided employment and work skills to help students succeed in life after high school. This year the SOAR program has included a new curriculum to help increase student’s work skills at all ability levels. We are exited about The First

Step Program. This program helps our SOAR Transition students (18-21 years of age) with their employment and work skills. The First Step Program is designed as a tool to address Basic Skill Development and Transition requirements at the secondary level that need guided instruction. The skills in First Step are very basic and designed to allow the students to learn and develop skills they may not possess. The categories used are;

employment skills, hand tools, measuring skills, and household skills. This program also helps students develop Work Behavior Skills and introduce them to the Practical Application of Economic Life Skills. They will learn how to follow work procedures and work rules. This will help them transfer the work skills learned in First Step to the real world. Students will also learn a positive work ethic and learn how to get along with fellow workers as well as supervisors.

AN UPDATE ON THE 2020-2021 ACADEMIC CALENDAR

Jordan Public Schools is slated to begin the 2020-2021 school year on Tuesday, September 8th due to a late Labor Day. Due to this post Labor

Day start, we surveyed our school community about applying for a Flexible Learning Year (FLY) option through Minnesota Department of Education

(MDE). With the support of staff and district families, we have applied for the FLY option which would allow us to start school prior to Labor Day.

We hope to hear from MDE by Friday, May 1st. At that time, we will communicate any 2020-2021 calendar adjustments if the FLY option is approved.

Academic calendars can be found on our website > jordan.k12.mn.us/academiccalendar
