Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

This month I want to share with you a prayer by Walter Brueggemann.

It is from his book Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth: Prayers of Walter

Brueggemann. He wrote this prayer after reading 2Samuel 7. In that story, King

David tells the prophet Nathan that he wants to build a permanent home for the

ark of the covenant. Nathan says to go ahead with plans. That night, however,

God tells Nathan to go back to David and tell the king that it’s not time for a

temple, and that David isn’t the one to build it, anyway. The news is not bad

news, though. The message that Nathan gives David includes God’s covenant

with David and his’s descendants. God’s message is clear enough: I’m not

through with you, yet. Israel has some more work, growing, and becoming to

do. So, don’t fear, I am with you, here, now, and always.

When we are truly faithful to God, our faithfulness, like the ark of the

covenant, is a steadfast witness to God’s faithfulness to us. The grace and

peace of Christ be with you all.

Allen

In the Midst of All the Pushing and Shoving

In the midst of all the pushing and shoving

among us,

in the world and in the church,

propelled by anxiety and

acted as brutality,

You have planted yourself in all your fidelity.

You have placed yourself among us

in steadfastness and abiding care

present in the day,

alert in the night,

making us all safe and noticed and cared for.

So evidence your fidelity as to curb our anxiety,

as to restrain our brutality,

as to overcome our alienation.

By your fidelity, renew us,

renew church,

renew city,

renew world.

Give us the safety to love you fully.

to love neighbor well,

in glad obedience. Amen.

June-July Health & Wellness Thanks to All! Thank you all who helped prepare and served another successful Lunch & Learn on May 9th. Speakers Crystal Woods and Scott Farmer from Ballad Health provided us with useful information about how to keep our body and our muscles moving. If you were unable to attend, there is information available in the church office. Thanks again to Rebecca Comer, Susan Hagar, Alexis Burkett and Kathie Dameron for another great meal. Stay tuned for our next Lunch & Learn this fall. Soups On Ministry Our Soup Ministry was a great success this past winter thanks to our volunteer teams. Soup and Bread makers included Marianne Huff, Marilyn Buchanan, Alexis Burkett, Marat Moore, Irene Mitchell, Karen Welch, Kathie Dameron, Joanne Comer and Rebecca Comer. If you would like to contribute meals this summer please contact me at 901-485-4280 or [email protected]. Gentle Yoga Gentle Yoga is taking a break after our initial 12 week run for 2018. Classes will resume later this summer. Gentle Yoga includes both sitting and standing gentle stretches. Props are provided. Thanks to participants Corrine Parnell, Joanne Comer, Barbara Grooms, Carolyn Shepard, Frances Collins, Carol Salinas, Lea Florence, Bunny Downing, and Sara Nan Byrd for the support of this ministry. Garden Ministry After a wet, cool early spring the Jonesborough Community Garden is picking up momentum! We have delivered dozens of fresh leaf lettuce, spinach and beets to JAMA Food Pantry. Coming soon will be carrots and more beets, okra, and green beans. Joining us this summer is a great group of FFA students from David Crockett High School with their sponsor Ryan Arnett. For the first time we are pleased have a young family helping us harvest in the garden as well. If you like to work independently or want to learn more by working in a small group, this is a perfect way to enjoy fellowship, provide food for the pantry and enjoy the garden! Special thanks to Marianne Huff, Dawn Heaton, Terri Knight, Lea Florence, Tony DeLucia and Glenn Walker. Jonesborough Community Garden is located at 503 Hillrise Drive. We meet on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons at 4:30 for harvesting. Beat the Heat This Summer Water Keep water on hand at all times to avoid dehydration. Avoid peak heat hours Exercise, play and garden outside before or after the peak heat hours of the day (10:00-2:00). Wear sunscreen Apply it 30 minutes before going outside for best results. Protect your eyes Wear sunglasses or a wide brimmed hat to keep out the strong summer sun. Use fans Be sure to turn on your ceiling fans, try a pedestal fan, or even a desk fan if you are tied to your computer during the day. Spritz yourself Keep a spray bottle in the refrigerator, and when the going gets hot, give yourself a good squirt. Give your appliances a break Skip the drying cycle on the dishwasher and leave the door open to let the dishes dry. Try grilling outside instead if heating up the oven. Eat light There’s a reason we crave salads in the summer. They’re easier to digest than heavier foods that leave you feeling sluggish in the high heat. Put up sun blockers Keep your house cooler by closing blinds and drapes to block out the sun.
