Joint Tactical Ground Station (JTAGS) The First Name and Last Word in Assured Theater Missile Warning Northrop Grumman: Pioneers in Reliable and Affordable Early Missile Warning Nearly two decades ago, Northrop Grumman intro- duced the Joint Tactical Ground Station (JTAGS) — a first-of-its-kind, transportable information processing system designed to receive and pro- cess in-theater, raw, infrared data from up to three Defense Support Program sensors. Developed and built by Northrop Grumman for the U.S. Army, JTAGS’ objective is simple: to receive, process and disseminate Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) sensor information on tactical ballistic missile (TBM) launches and other events of interest for warning, alerting and cueing via in-theater tactical and strategic communications networks. This architecture significantly reduces the risk of relying on long haul communications for missile warning to deployed forces. Situational Awareness Where and When It Matters Most JTAGS provides an essential link for theater com- mander’s situational awareness and features the following operational benefits: Cueing of active theater missile defense systems for rapid missile intercept Cueing attack operations assets to detect and destroy enemy launch capability Timely warning for protection of friendly forces and population JTAGS’ advanced missile early warning and cueing system is the only in-theater system that provides the combatant commander with the ability to warn, protect and defend theater operations. Defining the Future of JTAGS At the program’s inception, Northrop Grumman was selected as the trusted partner to the U.S. Army to design and deliver the only in-theater, TBM detection and warning system. We’ve made it our number one priority to not only protect the soldier by alerting the theater commander when danger is imminent, but also to work tirelessly to stay one step ahead of emerging threats.

The First Name and Last Word in Assured Theater Missile Warning

Northrop Grumman: Pioneers in Reliable and Affordable Early Missile WarningNearly two decades ago, Northrop Grumman intro-duced the Joint Tactical Ground Station (JTAGS) — a first-of-its-kind, transportable information processing system designed to receive and pro-cess in-theater, raw, infrared data from up to three Defense Support Program sensors.

Situational Awareness Where and When It Matters MostJTAGS provides an essential link for theater com-mander’s situational awareness and features the following operational benefits:

•Cueing of active theater missile defense systemsfor rapid missile intercept

•Cueing attack operations assets to detect anddestroy enemy launch capability

•Timely warning for protection of friendly forcesand population

JTAGS’ advanced missile early warning and cueing system is the only in-theater system that provides the combatant commander with the ability to warn, protect and defend theater operations.

Defining the Future of JTAGSAt the program’s inception, Northrop Grumman was selected as the trusted partner to the U.S. Army to design and deliver the only in-theater, TBM detection and warning system.

We’ve made it our number one priority to not only protect the soldier by alerting the theater commander when danger is imminent, but also to work tirelessly to stay one step ahead of emerging threats.

JTAGS Pre-Planned Product Improvement (P3I): Northrop Grumman’s Next Generation In-Theater Ballistic Warning SystemNorthrop Grumman has stood at the forefront of assured missile warning for more than 40 years. Today, drawing from our exten-sive space systems experience, our vision for the next generation of JTAGS — JTAGS P3I — includes developing an ever-more refined system that continues to adapt to emerging threats.

The low-risk, low-cost, but highly sophisticated JTAGS P3I system will:

• Improve sensor processingand fusion capabilities, includ-ing the ability to process SBIRSGEO-Starer direct down link andother national assets, to allowgreater exploitation of new sen-sor’s increased capabilities.

• Provide a de-sheltered, net-centric, open source, modularsystem featuring a reliable, ex-tensible and sustainable archi-tecture.

• Establish an application-pro-gramming interface-basedframework for rapid integrationof advanced algorithms toprovide a true “plug-in” archi-tecture, supporting straight-forward system optimization.

• Utilize Northrop Grumman’sbest-of-breed OPIR softwarecomponent design to enableeasy integration of provenstate-of-the-art processingand tracking components.

• Provide a graphic user interfaceutilizing delivered productsbased on a style guide devel-oped by the U.S. Army’s Pro-gram Executive Office, Missilesand Space.

• Deploy a centralized securityand sustainment approach toreduce operator/maintainerworkloads and increase opera-tional availability.

Delivering Low-Risk, Affordability and Reliability . . . Yesterday, Today and TomorrowAs more and more countries obtain ballistic missiles, esca-lating the TBM threat, Northrop Grumman stands prepared to meet this threat head on with our advanced missile early warning and cueing system.

Drawing on our 18-year partner-ship with the U.S. Army, Northrop Grumman’s next generation JTAGS P3I will continue to alert, enable and protect theater com-manders and soldiers the world over.

How It Works• JTAGS receives direct down-linked data from up to three Defense Support Program sensors and

follow-on space-based GEO and HEO sensors

• 3-D stereo processing of multiple sensors is performed to greatly improve tactical parameters. This groundbreaking technology, first introduced by Northrop Grumman in 1994, is still used todaythroughout the missile warning community

• Real-time reporting through theater communication systems rapidly disseminates data directlyto combatant commanders
