T2.3 International collaboration in ISGAN’s Smart Grid

International Research Facility Network (Task Leader: DERlab)

The main goals for this Task are:

• Collaboration with ISGAN – SIRFN (Smart Grid International Research

Facility Network), APEC Smart Grids Test Beds Network

• Support the role of DERLab as Operating Agent of ISGAN

Annex V (SIRFN)

• International knowledge sharing and discussions on testing

and validation of smart grid controls (focusing on voltage

and frequency control) in research facilities

The aim of this task is to identify the key activities of SIRFN

which are in line with ELECTRA and to implement and

coordinate the related work.

WP2 – Development of Joint Research Facilities

• Alliance that aims to accelerate development of new energy

technologies

− Strengthen, expand and optimise research capabilities

− Improve coordination and cooperation

− Reduce fragmentation and duplication

− Promote harmonisation of National and EC programmes

• Called for in the Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan

• Participation in EERA is in principle open to all research

organisations

− Not just a membership; need to bring in significant R&D capacity

• Based on own resources

23 ELECTRA – SIRFN Workshop @ IRED 2016

24 October 2016, Niagara Falls, Canada

Laboratory facilities and Research infrastructures (RIs) are vital for

smart grid technology and solutions development …

RIs are needed for testing prototypes and systems, for checking

the interoperability of these new systems, for assessing their

performance and integration in the whole system, and also for

certificating their compliance with related standards.

Apart from economic concerns, RIs require a great deal of

specialization, given the complex/sophisticated technical tools

and systems that have to be managed.

RIs are to be used for evaluation of

innovative solutions before or instead of being

implemented on large-scale and costly DEMO
