THE FLOOD DISASTER IN QUANG NAM PROVINCE

• Human loss– 30 people killed– 220 people wounded

• Houses:– Collapsed houses : 15,450– Unroofed houses : 155,000– Submerged house : (> 5m) 76,377

• For agriculture and food production– 12,760 tons of rice were uncoverable – 1700 ha of rice were destroyed – 1000 ha of vegetable were damaged and unable to recover.– 3,800 fruit trees destroyed

• Forestry : 24,000 forestry trees were destroyed( rubber tree, cinnamon,,,)

• Fishery– 400 ha of fishery pond were destroyed – 269 boats were sank

• Public construction work– Many parts of road were damaged– Most of electric system in villages were damaged– Family means of transport (motorbikes, family water

pumps) were damaged– A number of water wells were broken/damaged

Summary of sufferings and Needs

• For the short term• Food aid :Immediate support needed of

noodle, rice and bottle water to the people in remote and recently isolated communities

• Shelter : provide roofing materials for unroofed house households.

• Education:Roofs for damaged schools• Books , student kits for chidren

Summary of sufferings and Needs

• For the medium term• Reconstruction collapsed household : support

500 USD per house• Rice seed for next crop• For the long term• Provide cash or seeds to recover industrial forest• Rebuild damaged road in communes • Rebuild irrigation system • Organize community based disaster programs

including education of disaster preparedness for communes in high risk areas

Conclusion

• The disaster is very serious• International organizations, donors should give

strong support and help the victims• NGOs need commitment for support and give

resource and expertise for implementation of the emergency assistance
