What PathCAL is
Pathology - Computer Assisted Learning
A series of tutorials aimed at undergraduate students in biomedical subjects
Online service available as part of JISC Collections
Subscribing users authenticate to and run materials on the PathCAL server
Basic user/institutional tracking
Based on the award winning e-learning platforms developed by the University of Edinburgh

Provenance and History
Main academic lead: Dr Sandy Reid
Developed over more than 20 years
Many contributors; Edinburgh, Leeds and Cambridge
Started in 1984 in the Department of Pathology, University of Leeds on BBC microcomputers linked to slide projectors.
1993-4 Dr Sandy Reid, then in Leeds, wrote a series of completely new scripts on a program called VIPA that ran on PCs.
Upgraded into templates devised by Kim Whittlestone (Bristol) that ran under Asymmetrix Toolbook.
From 1996 Sandy Reid developed the programs further using Toolbook at the University of Edinburgh
From 2001 onwards the programs were transferred to a web-compatible format (became EROS)
PathCAL was made available as a low-cost online subscription service to UK HE and FE institutions in 2005 in partnership with JISC Collections.

Contributors Professor Colin Bird, Pathology, University of Leeds, later University of Edinburgh, for initiating computer-assisted learning in Pathology in 1983 and for support and encouragement over
years.
Dr Patrick Harkin, Pathology, University of Leeds: from 1983: wrote programs for BBC microcomputers; devised VIPA program, 1993; transferred Cals to Toolbook; set up Cals on University of Leeds network; collaborated in setting up Cals in the University of Edinburgh, 1986 and 1996.
Kim Whittlestone, University of Bristol: devised Calscribe, a set of templates that ran on the package Asymmetrix Toolbook, 1994; later, with Mark Arends, set up programs in University of Cambridge.
Andrew Hay, Steve Tom, University of Leeds: advised on various aspects of photography and image processing.
Professor Andrew Wyllie, University of Edinburgh: supported work on Cal programs, 1996-99.
Dr Andrew Short, Gill McConnell, Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh: advised on Cal development.
Dr Mark Arends, Pathology, Edinburgh: wrote several programs and took keen interest in Cal; with Kim Whittlestone, set up programs in University of Cambridge.
Drs Hamish MacLeod and Charles Anderson, University of Edinburgh: advised on educational aspects of Cal, 1996.
Dr Gordon Watson, Phillip Evans, University of Edinburgh and Jen Harvey: advised on educational aspects of Cal.
Dr Raashid Luqmani, Rheumatology, University of Edinburgh: from 1996 collaborated in development of the system; worked on network programming.
Dr Andrew Krajewski, Pathology, University of Edinburgh: did preliminary work on Web-compatibility.
Dr Alistair Williams and others in Pathology, University of Edinburgh: participated in Cals group, which met regularly to plan further development; wrote Cal material in Authorware.
Dr David Dewhurst: set up the Learning Technology Section (LTS), University of Edinburgh, 1999.

Jake Broadhurst: developed links with JISC to make Cals available to colleges other than in Edinburgh and Cambridge, 2004-05.
Professor David Harrison, Pathology, Edinburgh: supported work on Cal; obtained financial support to enable work to start on Web transfer.

– Runtime: web-based, skinnable and web services (in development)

Cut down for PathCAL service - no authoring
Uses ATHENS authentication - complex to set up but helpful help-desk! Not cheap though … replacement to ATHENS creating uncertainty
