“John Dowland for Lutes, Viols and Voices”

A workshop for singers, viol players and lutenists (A440) Tutor: Stewart McCoy

This year’s “LV&V” workshop will be based on the songbooks and instrumental music of John Dowland, whose 450th anniversary of his birth is celebrated this year. The workshop follows the successful format of previous years and we will try to explore the many combinations of voices, viols and lutes that the available music offers. The style of the music necessitates smaller ensembles than usual MEMF events, and so the workshop will be divided into smaller groups coming together at the end for a grand finale. There should be opportunities to change groups during the day. Versatile participants should indicate all their skills on the application form so that we can plan ahead and structure the day to suit the wishes and skills of those taking part. Viol players will have the opportunity to take part in viol consorts as well as accompanying solo singers or groups. It is important to book early for this event as numbers may be restricted, and we also need to develop the detailed programme based on individual preferences. Music will be provided, but it will help if participants bring any relevant music they already have (clearly marked with name of owner, of course).
