Art classes, Anatomy, Perspective, andHistory of Art lectures comprised sevenecture hours, with overtime andrawing assignments at home. There he

met his wife, Esther, whom he marriedn December, 1906. Esther was the

model for The Fairy Princess and manyf his later illustrations. In the spring of 908, John and Esther traveled to Italy, ettling in a villa above Volterra. Theytayed in Italy for nearly two years.auer was stricken by the beauty of 4th century works he found in the

museum of Naples, causing him to sayI notice more and more, that it is fromhe oldest and most primitive artistshat one must learn to become an artistneself".

he details of John Bauer's work areccurate -- Bronze Age axes and

medieval ironwork. The costumes inis fairy tales are modeled from books

n found in the Royal Library. In 1904,e was commissioned to do a book bout Lappland and spent a summer

ollowing the Lapps on theirmigrations. Some of the details of theirress are included in the costumes of is trolls.

His most famous work, the illustrationso the first of eight volumes of Blandomtar och Troll (Among Gnomes androlls), a collection of fary tales written

y Swedish authors, was published in907. It was hugely successful. In thearly volumes, the illustrations wererinted in grey tones only, sometimes

with yellow color added. In the laterolumes we find the famous examplesf his mature work: Princess tuvstarrnd Skutt the moose against thewilight sky. In the later volumes, his

lustrations were printed in color.

Many years have passed. Still PrincessCottongrass sits and looks wonderinglynto the water for her heart. She is noonger a little girl. Instead, a slenderlant, crowned with white cotton, tands leaning over the edge of the

ool. Now and then the elk returns, tops, and looks at it tenderly. Only henows that this is the princess from

Dream Castle. Perhaps she nods andmiles, for he is an old friend, but sheoes not want to follow him back; sheannot follow any more, as long as shes under the spell. The spell lies in theool. Far, far under the water lies a lost
