2012 Annual Conference Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio & Northern Kentucky

May 31 – June 3 In 1790, 13 years before Ohio became a state, the settlement of Cincinnati was named in honor of the newly elected President George Washington, as symbolized by Cincinnatus, the Roman general who relinquished dictatorial power and returned to his plow at war’s end. At the confluence of three major tributaries of the Ohio River – the Great Miami, Little Miami and Licking Rivers – Cincinnati was the natural transportation and commercial hub for a hinterland covering large sections of three states. The city has been an important industrial center from its early beginnings. The region’s industrial heritage includes transportation infrastructure, component manufacturing, food and fat processing, and production of steel, precision tools, vehicles and paper. Cincinnati’s 1866 Roebling suspension bridge, like its younger sister in New York, remains in constant use by cars and pedestrians.

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES PLEASE NOTE:

• The SIA Registration Desk in the conference hotel will provide timetables with exact times. • Your registration packet will include information on the many museums and points of interest

within walking distance of the conference hotel, to occupy your time in Downtown Cincinnati.

The following four activities are included at no additional charge with your basic registration: Opening Reception - Evening of Thursday, May 31 Companionship and entertaining speakers, in the magnificent Continental Ballroom of the Hilton. (Appetizers provided, sufficient for a meal. Cash bar.) Full-Day Bus Tour - Approximately 8:00-5:00, Friday, June 1 Choose one of five different itineraries, listed on the next page, featuring historic and modern industrial sites in Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky. (Lunch provided.) Second Annual SIA Film Festival - Evening of Friday, June 1 Extraordinary films in the ornate Chapel of the striking 1928 Masonic Center, or simply mingle with friendly conference-goers in the adjacent Founders’ Hall. (Cash bar.) Paper Sessions & Annual Business Meeting Luncheon - Approximately 9:00-5:00, Saturday, June 2 (May be purchased separately.) Presentations by researchers on industrial history and archeology, and a sit-down luncheon with important discussions and announcements, at the conference hotel. (Beverages and lunch provided.)

PROCESS TOURS – Approximately 8:00-5:00, Friday, June 1 F1-Upriver: Old River Pumping Station with 100-foot-tall triple expansion steam engines, historic Lunken Airport, and church bell casting in a 170-year-old foundry. F2-Downtown: Out-of-sight but vitally important aspects of an industrial city, such as the flood control pumping system, underground beer storage caverns and central rail switching yard. F3-Northern Kentucky: Sausage making, a rail yard and a steel tubing mill, with lunch in a German-style beer garden. F4-Paper Trail: The Great Miami Valley between Cincinnati and Dayton has a long history of producing paper, steel and aircraft systems, all of which remain vital today. F5-Countryside: Visit a 90-year-old operating foundry and a gunpowder factory, with lunch in historic Clifton, site of the famous gorge in the picturesque Little Miami Valley.

SATURDAY BANQUET – Evening of June 2

Enjoy exhibits detailing the region’s economic development since earliest human habitation, plus a full dinner and an entertaining speaker, at the Cincinnati History Museum -- one of three major museums housed in Cincinnati’s beautiful 1933 Union Terminal, along with an OMNIMAX theater and (still) the city’s main train station. (Transportation provided. Cash bar.)

CONTINUING EDUCATION WORKSHOP - Morning to mid-afternoon, Thursday, May 31

This three-quarter-day introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) -- with hands-on learning of tips, tricks, tools, and applications -- offers valuable lessons regardless of your level of experience, or lack of it. Participants are encouraged to bring scanned maps, GPS data, AutoCAD or other digital files, as well as handheld GPS units you may be working with. We hope this workshop creates an ongoing discussion among a network of peers, who will continue to learn from one another. Conducted in the GIS lab of the University of Cincinnati. (Transportation and lunch provided.)

EXTENDED TOUR OF INDIANA, OHIO & MICHIGAN – May 28 to June 6 or 7 SIA members may take part in additional tours before and after the Conference, with the Spring Tour of the UK-based Association of Industrial Archeology. All hotel bookings, including at the Conference Hotel, are included in this package. Beginning with an overnight stay in Northern Kentucky on Monday 5/28, this tour will visit Southern Indiana (historic Madison, Cummins Engine, et.al.), arriving in Cincinnati in time for the SIA Opening Reception on Thursday 5/31. Departing Cincinnati at mid-day on Sunday 6/3, the tour will visit aviation museums in Dayton, then spend two (or an optional three) days in Detroit (auto plants, Henry Ford Museum, et.al.). Total cost will be between $1395 and $1815 per person (double occupancy) -- depending on attendance -- not including SIA Conference registration and optional extras (Saturday Banquet or a Sunday morning tour). See “AIA Spring Tour” on SIA website.

CONFERENCE HOTEL

Our conference headquarters is the historic Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, in the city’s vibrant downtown, part of the Carew Tower complex, a 1930 Art Deco masterpiece, which includes an observation deck, retail mall, Rookwood tile mural and downtown Cincinnati’s only food court.

Rooms are available at SIA group rates, while supplies last, for reservations made by May 10. The rate for regular rooms is $139 per night, and for junior suites (perfect for families) is $169. SIA members also receive free high-speed internet access and other amenities. (There is a $10 surcharge for rooms occupied by more than two people, not counting children under 18, unless the children require additional bedding.) The quoted rate does not include state and local taxes, currently at 17%.

For the group rate, you may reserve on-line via the SIA website or by phone at 800-HILTONS (445-8667). If by phone, you must indicate your SIA affiliation at the time your reservation is made. Do not make your own reservation if you are attending as part of the AIA Spring Tour of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

If you do not make your reservation at the Hilton, the Conference is within easy walking distance of other downtown hotels, as well as hotels just across the nearby Roebling Bridge in Covington, Kentucky (a very pleasant walk for those in walking trim, but allow at least 30 minutes).
