An Innovative Baby Carrier
MoercyA Faucet for New Mother A Kid’s Folding Chair
This team project aims at designing a
product related to head protection. The
design came out with a direction focusing
on solving problems faced by labor worker
who uses jackhammer at a construction site.
“Pop” especially solves problems of “Noise”,
“Stability of Safety Glasses”, “Convenience of
Instant Sound Flow and Sound Canceling”, and
“Easy set-up and storage”.
PO PInstant Switch Ear Protection
Problems of using jackhammer are...
High Work-Rest Frequency
Loud Noises
Jackhammer user need to stop working and take rest every 5 minutes.
Bulky, less convenience for taking it off frequently.
Jackhammer produces loud noise from 100 to 130 decibel which is fairly harmful to human ears.
Regular ear buds only cover 31dB.
◊ More convenience of wearing ear protection to fit into worker’s 5 minutes work-rest frequency.◊ Better protection from jackhammer noises comparing to ordinary ear plugs.◊ Stop safety goggles from sliding off.
Design Mission
Vibration and posture of using jackhammer cause safety goggles to slide off from face.
Safety goggles sliding off can disturb working process.

Hand2An Innovative Baby Carrier
This project is designed for the 2011 Student
Design Competition conducted by the International
Housewares Association. The goal is to elevate the
safety degree and the experience quality of carrying
a baby outside. The main problem solved here is the
dangerous “One-Hand Holding Moment” during the
process of putting a baby into a portable carrier and
putting onto the parents’ body. The comfortness of the
baby is also improved in this design.
Parents never stop seeking something better for their baby; and carrying baby outside is one of the most concerned activities from many perspectives. Possible difficulties and concerning things are safety, comfortability, and convenience issues - while “safety” is always parents’ first concern.
Potential Problem Category
Target MarketBabies around 4 months to 12 months old and their parents who prefer a new portable baby carrier with advanced safety and convenience design.
Convenience Comfortability Safety
Through observations from videos, I found a concerning issue. When parents trying to fit their babies into the carrier, they very often support their babies’ body only with one hand while they need the other hand to hold or adjust the carrier. The process is unstable and the “one-hand holding moment” can take either seconds or even minutes. It is concerning especially when the baby is active or struggling. And it is possible that the baby rolls over or slip off. And it also makes the process of wearing baby carrier less efficient, unstable, and dangerous.
Discovery of “One-Hand Holding Moment”
Many parents were unaware of the “One-Hand Holding Moment”. But they shows awareness of unstable wearing process and willingness of preferring to own a new design product which avoids the problem.
Parents Responses on “One-Hand Holding Moment”
Survey on 22 parents who currently taking care baby or had the experience.Their main concerns of taking baby outside and some suggestions towards baby carrying products are about:
1. High safety for a peace of mind2. Inconveniences during outside activities.

Features
Upper padding section with iron wire is reshapable.a. Wide and loose to give baby space and fresh air.b. Close and narrow to ensure baby’s head is safe and secure.c. The padding keeps baby comfortable.
Back extra padding supports baby and reduce back pressures.
Elastic wings give a new way of wearing baby carrier.1. Insert the bottom component to parent’s shoulder straps2. Push the flexible two sides in with thumbs.3. Release thumbs’ pressure for the two sides automatically spring outward and goes
into the components on parent’s shoulder straps.

Step 3
Wear the baby carrier on a flat surface.Secure the bottom with click-in buckles.
Two hands hold up the baby and move close towards the parent.
Insert part A first. Secure part B with thumbs push two sides in and release to snap into the components on parent’s shoulder straps.
Push in and release
Done and secured.

How to Wear...
MoercyA faucet aims at satisfying a new mother’s high demanding physical and emotional sensitivity at an Asian postpartum confinement center.
Asian Culture of Postpartum Confinement
New mothers are sensitive, vulnerable and emotionally unstable.
They especially needs caring on hygiene, warmness, and nutrition.
th
In some East Asian countries, new mothers need to take a traditional
30 days postpartum confinement because they are considered
sensitive, vulnerable, and emotionally unstable due to birth
giving. This tradition considers new mothers suffer from tough
physical and emotional wear and tear during pregnancy. And
they especially focus on hygiene care, warmness protection, and
special nutrition according to traditional rules. Today, there are
businesses of postpartum confinement including professional’s on-site
services and confinement centers for modern new mothers.

The design mood is “tranquil”.
New mothers are easier to feel lonely and weak. They highly demand safeness, calmness, and cleanness.
Consider relationships between emotional symbols and physical forms for brainstorming initial ideas.
Create life size sketch models for studying and adjusting proportions.
Refining form details through repeating consideration on emotional symbols and user experiences.
Idea of “Hand Curve” and protection

Button-control feature• Default warm water• Temperature control
Bottom form inspired from maternal’s body curve• enlarged faucet base• more rounded form
• Finger-sliding button for water output control
• Two side panels for temperature control
User Feedback• How can the Finger-Sliding button function
smoothly?• The button is too small to apply force
comfortably?• The slit at center is ok and would not create too
much water stain because the sliding of button.• Prefer to control temperature with a wheel
button than panels at two sides.
Wheel Button slides and turn for water output and temperature control
Final Concept
Slide the wheel forward for water output .
Turn the wheel for temperature control.Default water temperature is warm.
Water runs out from the circular slit and flows through the surface to the basin.
