Hi people! Can you believe it? It’s fall season again! Where has this year gone? I’m sure that most of you, like myself, absolutely love fall. Cooler weather, festive activities, boiled peanuts, halloween, the Peanut Festival and of course- football! In this issue we’ve tried to give you a little bit of fun info about most of those things. As a mom of three, I always try to make fall a fun time for my children (even now when they’re 22, 17 & 14). Whether it’s a trip to the pumpkin patch, hosting a game day party or decorating for trick-or-treaters, we always spend a lot of quality time together during the fall. So I hope you take time to do the same. Go and enjoy all that fall has to offer. Make special memories with friends & family. After all, that’s what is most important in life. Happy Fall Ya’ll!

Dream, Believe, Achieve

•Try to eat most of your carbs before 4 p.m.

•Become a “snack-bag” lady! Never leave the house without at least two pre-portioned plastic baggies filled with healthy snacks.

•Don’t like drinking plain water? Drop in slices of orange, lemon or lime!

•Avoid the “all or nothing” mindset. Indulge in a favorite comfort food or dessert- no matter how fattening- once a week.

•Weight loss has to be a complete lifestyle change in order to be successful.

•Put yourself on an eating schedule. For example: 7 a.m.breakfast, 10 a.m. snack, 12:00 lunch, 3 p.m. snack and dinner at 6 p.m. Then nothing after dinner! Benefits: Eating on a set schedule increases metabolism and prevents mindless snacking throughout the day.

Sharon Lewis-Saliba had been in theater for many years in Dothan and finally decided to open her own theater in January of this year. The Flagship Theatre offers after-school classes to children ages 6 - 18, as well as pre-schoolers and homeschool students. The six week block of classes teaches the students theater vocabulary, imagination games and confidence building exercises. At the end of the six weeks, the students perform a show for the public. The first show of this Fall season was The Lucky Tiger and upcoming will be the Fantastic Funhouse. Sharon writes most of the plays herself to accomodate the number and experience of her class members.

She enjoys it most when she sees an actor “finally get what it’s all about.” “I once had a very shy child in class that would cry easily. A year later, she stars as a witch in one of our shows and screams out her line in her best witchy voice. Her mother & I stood at the back of the room & wept like babies.” Fall classes are starting, and on Sept. 26 & 27, there will be auditions for “Twas the night before Christmas”. In the future, Flagship hopes to offer dance classes and host schools to see one of their performances. The Flagship Theatre is located at 965 Woodland Dr., Dothan, AL (334) 699-FLAG/ 701-5449 or visit www.theflagshiptheatre.com

“A typical day? There is no such thing in Kindergarten! All of my students come from different backgrounds & each child brings unique qualities to my classroom. When the children come in they first tell me all of the events that happened since I had seen them last. First comes group time when we complete our “Morning Message,” which is a daily letter to the children that describes our day. Next is calendar, weather, counting & recitation of letters, sounds, & sight words. After that, to keep their attention, we sing several educational songs (& a few silly ones too!) The rest of our day consists of assigned blocks of time for Reading, Language Arts & Math, with Science, Social Studies & Art integrated appropriately. We also have weekly visits to the computer lab & library. Don’t forget to throw in P.E., lunch, recess & rest time which makes for a fast-paced learning experience. The first few days of school are a roller coaster ride! From the moment they enter my room, almost all children are excited at the thought of being in “big school”. But, there are some that have extra butterflies in their tummies. The best medicine? Lots & lots

of hugs! The thing I love most about my job is the knowledge that I am laying the foundation of learning for all children that come through my door. The gratifying moments are those when a child realizes they can add, cut on the lines or read a sentence for the first time. Most-ly, I treasure the precious times when I hear their sweet little voices say, “I love you Mrs.Gilland.” I cope with a stressful day with large quantities of chocolate - haha! I have Sirena Williams, a full-time special education aide in my room which is my daily lifesaver! When things get extra hectic I have to slow down & remind myself my kids are only five!” This is Brandi’s 8th year teaching Kinder-garten at Slocomb Elementary School. She received her Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees from Troy State University Dothan. Brandi enjoys spending time with her husband, Lowell, and their 2 children, 3 year-old Gage and 4 month-old Grady.

When hearing the name Eye Center South, one tends to think of eye related issues or Lasik surgery. However, Dr. Richard Bryant, a physician at Eye Center South, offers so much more. One common procedure he performs is called a blepharoplasty or an upper eyelid lift. This procedure can be very useful for patients with loose or excess skin on the upper eyelid causing a tired appearance or even impairing vision. Also known as droopy eyelids, this excess skin and fat may be removed or repo-sitioned for improved vision and a more youthful appearance. Often times this procedure is covered by insurance. For those interested in non-surgical procedures to improve appearance, Dr. Bryant also offers Botox, Juvederm and Restylane treatments and now carries the Obagi skin care system. For more information visit www.eyecentersouth.net or call 334-793-2211 for a consultation appointment.

When Roxanne Strickland found out that her third child was going to be a little girl, she was beyond excited. This would be her chance to personally design her first daughter’s dream nursery. Every detail of this room was thought of and created by Roxie and is the room in her home she is most proud of. Cornices above the window and closet add a theatrical touch, while the crystals added to the chandelier create a romantic, sweet accent. Roxie put her heart into creating this delightful room, as only a mother could do!

Roxanne Strickland lives in Wicksburg, AL. She and her husband, Jason, have three chil-dren, Kyle, Rock and Reese.

the Masche’s are just a typical family. Bryan and Jenny both have jobs, have bills to pay, errands to run and kids to raise. However, they happen to have SIX three year olds, have a national television show and have to make appearances & give interviews. You may recognize them from the WE network TV show, Raising Sextuplets. Recently, two of my children and I spent the day with the whole Masche clan at a beautifully shaded park, over-looking the water, in Destin, Florida. Originally from Arizona, Bryan & Jenny packed up their life and their six toddlers and moved to Destin on January 1, 2010, to experience life on their own. Since the birth of the babies on June 11, 2007, Bryan & Jenny were always surrounded by lots of family and friends. They loved and appreci-ated all of the help they received, as it was much

needed, but the couple had other dreams. Jenny, a physician’s assistant, had always wanted to live near the beach and Bryan wanted to own his own business as an Investment Advisor. So when an opportunity came for Bryan to finally have his dream job, the decision was made and they said their goodbyes to everyone they loved. “Bryan and I feel like we need this time to be alone and raise our children on our own,” says Jenny. “Is it hard? Absolutely, but we really love it here and are so happy about our decision to move.” So how did the six babies happen? After having difficulty getting pregnant, Bryan & Jenny turned to fertility treatments. They chose the Intra-uterine insemination fertility procedure and were successful on the first try. Their blessings came in the form of 3 girls and 3 boys. In birth order, they are: Savannah, Bailey, Grant,

Cole, Molli and Blake. And a very rambunctious group they are! You might get four in one place & settled but two others are off & running! If you’ve ever watched the show, let me assure you that it is not edited to show you just the chaotic parts of life. It really IS a chaotic life! It’s non-stop chasing, playing, feeding, changing, hug-ging, crying and laughing. Even with my kids, myself, Bryan and Jenny all there to help with the sextuplets, we were all in constant motion. And trying to find enough tables & seats open in a busy burger joint at lunchtime was impos-sible! It was amazingly fun but very exhausting. Hooray to you, Bryan & Jenny, for doing it day in and day out! They are an awesome family and it is our pleasure to now call them friends. See more photos on jodymagazine.blogspot.com!

Recently, Jenny decided to join a new, direct sales company called Duvita. Duvita products consist of herbal supplements that give energy and control appetite. After using the products for 6 weeks, Jenny was passionate about their positive effects and decided to make Duvita her new career as a company representative. She hopes to be able to quit her physician’s assistant job by January in order to work Duvita full-time while staying home with her children.

Recenty, jody magazine accepted nominees for a makeover. Our winner was Shelia Mc-Kenzie of Dothan! Shelia was nominated by her daughter, Gayla Land, who wrote in, “when I was a teenager my mom would say ‘do my makeup’....I hope you pick her!” And we did! Shelia’s makeover was done in two stages. First, her hair was colored & styled by Liza Register, owner of Fusion Salon in Do-than. Next, Mary Kay make-up was applied by Pam Bennett with step-by-step instructions & product descriptions. Shelia was also pre-sented with a gift certificate for a manicure & pedicure from VIP Nails. The make-over was a success and Shelia was able to show off her younger look at a high school football game that night!

Kay Gilbert is a decorator/designer in Dothan, AL. She specializes in re-purposing items. We asked Kay to tell us a little about her business. “I think everything is useful in some way, and with a little imagination we can turn that something into something wonder-ful!!! People have things that maybe are just not used in the correct place or setting. I love to look at the scale of a room and then help with placement of pieces for the best flow, but accessorizing is like the “jewel” of the room for me....the icing on the cake! I Love, Love to Accessorize! I started my business of working for others because friends, family and their friends were always asking me to help with color choices, or the big question was “what would you do if this was yours?”. I started out staging for realtors in Atlanta. It was like a fantasy job come true. I believe function and beauty can work hand in hand! My favorite part of my job is the people and their person-alities! I love the interaction. I love to find their “style” and then put it together for them. I am not someone that comes into a space and makes it my own...it is yours! I just help you find you! I really believe that we can use what we have or buy a used item and make it Fabulous! Paint goes a long, long way!! You really don’t have to spend a fortune to have a wonderful, warm and welcoming home! I can help!!!” Visit Kay’s blog site at: www.designwithk.blogspot.com

Maureen Smith wanted to build her dream home and in 2005 she did it. A charming, 1700 sq.ft. house located between Wicksburg and Dothan is now home. However, being single means only one income which means decorating this new home on a budget. All of the painting was done by Maureen, with a friend’s help and the decorating has been done in stages. “I made all of the floral arrangements in the house. Dried flowers are fairly expensive so I would buy them when the stores had them on 50% markdown. The tea set in the foyer belonged to my grand-mother. I still have some ideas that I’d like to do to the house, in time. But for now, I really love it. God opened doors for me to have this house and I am so thankful.”

3 suggestions for budget shopping: 1. Make a list of the items that you need.2. Pick up a Wednesday newspaper. That is when most of the grocery stores advertise their sales for the week. Then I choose only two of the stores to shop from, depending on which stores have the best prices on the things that are on my list. If I go to every store that has a good deal, then I end up buying more things than I need.

Tips to get started:

Sunday papers are good to get for coupons. Also, the magazine “ALL YOU” is known for their coupons & money saving ideas. You can use a store coupon and a manufacturers coupon on the same item. It is fun to see all you can save! Another coupon tip is when you see “buy one and get one free”, try to use a manufacturers coupon on that item and save even more!!

Before you shop, pull out your coupons on the items that are on your list so you won’t have to deal with them at the store. Keep them where you will see them so you don’t forget to use them.

When you have some time while shopping, learn what are good prices and what are not. For example, from comparing prices over the years, I know what is a good price for boneless chicken breasts and what is not. I have a price point that I will not go over for that item. Even when things are advertised “on sale” but is over my price point, I know to look somewhere else.

Here are a few meals that are inexpensive but plentiful in servings:*Taco Salad - it is fun to put out different ingredients so each person can make it their favorite way.*Casseroles*Chili - add rice and it goes much further*Soups - take a favorite and make it your fam-ily’s “famous recipe” and it can be fun.

Tips provided by Julie Parrish of Dothan, AL. She and her husband Ken have 6 children.Have budget tips you’d like to share? Email to: [email protected]

3. Keep freezer bags in stock so you can buy larger amounts of meat and vegetables when they are on sale. Then you won’t need to buy as much the next week.

Enterprise resident, Carol Hosley opened “The Consigment CAT” at 121 North Main Street in December 2009. CAT stands for Clothing And Treasures. Carol likes to say it’s “purrrfectly Upscale Clothing and Treasures”. The Consignment CAT sells name-brand casual wear, business wear, formals, purses, shoes, jewelry and accessories for Women, Misses and Juniors’. Items must be care-fully checked against a 14 point checklist to meet The Consignment CAT’s high & finicky standards for resale. The store has a “boutique-like” atmosphere with lots of purrr...ple in the décor. Carol came up with the name as a fun way of incorporat-ing her love of cats with her dream to open a ladies consignment shop. The shop uses Facebook to post photos & special sales. The last Friday night of the month is “Girl’s Night Out” & the store stays open until 8 pm with spe-cial discounts. jody: You two are very funny & interact well to-gether. What do you attribute that to? Bud: I think it’s because we come from different backgrounds. Broadway: I’m a “family guy” with a wife and three kids and Bud is the grown-up, single dude who sees life through a different window than me. Bud: And those differences help us to find com-edy in just about every situation you put in front of us….usually at each other’s expense. We also have a strange ability to read each other’s minds. Lots of mornings I’ll start to say something & Broadway will say it first and vice versa. Broadway: But at ten o’clock every morning, when the show is over, the show isn’t over. We just move it to a different room. Bud: This is the most fun I’ve ever had in radio. Broadway: Couldn’t agree more. jody: Do you ever get on each other’s nerves? Broadway: Never….Bud Ford is the brother I never wanted… Bud: Not really, we both know this job can get tedious at times, but we have fun doing it. jody:What happens, “behind the scenes” while music is playing & when you go off air. Broad-way: When the music is playing, we really go to work. We have to go through mountains of infor-mation to determine what will work on air. Not to mention phone calls that have to be answered, audio files that have to be produced & edited and

on some days, it’s our responsibility to make sure the coffee is ready when the boss shows up. Bud: When we’re off the air, we are responsible for all content on the radio station & the station website. We spend about 3 hours every day preparing for the next day’s show. jody: What are your future plans? Broadway: The thing we love most is bringing Nashville to the Tri-States every morning. We have interviews sched-uled over the next 4-6 weeks with Carrie Under-wood, Rascal Flatts, James Otto, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert & Toby Keith. We’re also getting ready for the National Peanut Festival. Bud: We’ll be there for the Chris Young & Steel Magnolia shows. jody: What’s the funniest thing that has happened on your show? Broadway: The funniest thing that’s happened so far wasn’t on the show. We had a chance to interview (w/audio & video) Kenny Chesney during Bama Jam. The interview went great, except for one minor detail. When we left the interview, Einstein here realized that he hadn’t hit the record button on his new video camera. We had some great audio but absolutely no video of our interview with the biggest star in country music. Bud: I really didn’t think that was funny at all. Visit Bud and Broadway on 955wtvy.com (key-word “Goober” gets you to Bud and Broadway’s World) Listen to their show on 95.5 WTVY Mon-Fri 6a-10a

With Halloween approaching, I had to go check out the restaurant named after a ghost! Huggin’ Molly’s is named after the legend of the 7 ft.tall ghost of Molly, who is thought to still walk the streets of Abbeville late at night. If she happens upon you, she chases you down, gives you a hug & screams in your ear. How-ever, during the daylight hours, this “step back in time” establishment is a bit more friendly. Upon entering, I found myself in a 50’s soda fountain shop, complete with chrome stools with red leather seats. I resisted the tempta-tion of a milkshake & went into the dining room to order lunch. I ordered the hamburger steak w/fries, which to my delight, were fresh, home-cut fries & lots of them! On the menu, I noticed they offer daily lunch specials & din-ner specials Thurs.-Sat.nights. The food was delicious & based on the crowd joining me for lunch, there are plenty of repeat custom-ers. It may be a bit of a drive, but you should eat there soon! Huggin’ Molly’s is located in downtown Abbeville. (334) 585-7000 or visit www.hugginmollys.com

The FanThis is the tale of a special man

A die hard breed called the “Bama Fan”He follows his team as they beat down their foes

Leaving trails of tears wherever they goHe waits anxiously for the football to snap

Nothing else comes before it, (not even a nap)He cheers with their victories, and moans at defeat

But when Bama is playing, his life is completeAs a devoted follower of the prestigious schoolThe Bama fan thinks that the “U of A” rules

So if you should search for him during the FallYou’ll find him wherever the Tide’s playing ballJust listen, you might hear him cry in the night

“A Bama fan’s blood flows CRIMSON and WHITE!”

AuburnAuburn Fans stand up and cheer as they watch their

team run inThey’re all here for one reason, to watch their ball

team WINExcitement builds as the eagle soars above the waiting

crowd“Go Tigers” and “War Eagle” are chanted long and loud

The band plays Auburn’s fight song, the crowd’s at fever pitch

The throng of cheering Auburn fans awaiting that first kick

The kick returner is waiting, and he knows just what to do

He grabs the ball and runs it back in a streak of orange and blue

The crowd goes wild as he runs it in and shouts of joy abound

Excitement fills the Autumn air…the TIGERS are in town

TROYIn a flash of cardinal red and black,

the Trojans take the field

The victory is now in sight,

our team will NEVER yield

The crowd’s anticipating the first

strike of the sword

As the play is made and carried

through, and the first touchdown

is scored

The air’s filled with excitement as

the Trojans play with pride

And from the stands the fans call out

“Go Troy! Let’s drive for five!”

The “Sound Of The South” plays the

fight song, as the team closes in for

the win

This is Troy University football, and

we’re the best that we’ve ever been

Balloon Stomping Tailgate Game:For a different kind of party game, have each participant blow up a balloon of their favorite team’s colors. Then they tie it with string to their ankle. On the command, guests (only using their feet) try to be the last person to have their balloon busted i.e., you stomp on your opponents. The last survivor with balloon intact is the winner!

Traveling to Tailgate?•Make a list of what you need to bring; and don’t forget the tickets!•Bring extra food & drinks. It’s better to have leftovers than not enough. Also bring plenty of non-alcoholic drinks for the non-drinkers & kids.•Make cleanup easy by using disposable containers, such as zip-lock baggies or tin-foil pans. Also bring paper plates & plastic silverware.•Don’t forget the condiments! Ketchup, mustard, relish, etc.•Bring plenty of chairs.•Get there early to secure a good spot with-out fighting massive crowds.•Choose a parking lot that is close to the stadium & to other tailgaters. You’ll want to be in the middle of the action.•Don’t forget to bring water & sunscreen. Water for drinking & to put out the fire.•Bring a radio so you can hear what’s going on inside the stadium. If you have tickets to the game, you’ll know when to head inside. If you don’t have tickets, you can still hear what’s going on.•Pay special attention to food safety. Bring

a cooler with plenty of ice to store food. If something’s been sitting out too long, throw it away.•Be respectful & clean up after yourself. Bring trash bags in case there is no access to trash cans.•Bring paper towels or napkins in case of spills or messy barbecue.•Bring some kitchen utensils, such as a bottle opener or knife.

Party at Home?Set up a chicken wing station.Have Buffalo wings, crispy fried chicken drumsticks & drum-mettes, BBQ chicken wings and Lemon Dijon wings.Have several sauces on hand: ranch, blue cheese, ketchup, honey mustard and sweet & sour.

Favorite Team Easy Decor:At a local discount store buy a sheet set with your team’s logo or just a solid color that represents the team’s colors.Drape the flat sheet over your couch & tuck the ends into the sofa cushions to create a slipcover. Use the pillowcases on your decorative pillows & put on other chairs in the room. For a quick tablecloth, cut the elastic off the ends of the fitted sheet to create another flat sheet and use on your game day buffet table. All of these make for easy clean up - just throw into the washing machine & they’re ready for the next game day!

Fun & Games for a great day with friends!

“TO STAY OR TO GO? “ THAT IS THE QUESTION.................................And one that Lisa Pierce and Tara Hol-man would like to address. Lisa works as a designer to help make modifications for bet-ter mobility allowing people to stay in their homes. Tara works as a senior adult move man-ager to help coordinate and oversee a move. Here, these two professionals offer tips relating to their businesses. Lisa’s Tip:Take a tour of your home, examining it closely (especially the bathroom). If you were to en-counter a mobility issue, would your home, as it is today, allow you to remain there? If not, there may be some simple modifications that could make all the difference for you and allow you to enjoy your home for a lifetime. Don’t wait until there is an urgent need to explore the possibilities. Tara’s Tip:Plan a walk-through of your home and decide if you were to move what pieces of furniture you would absolutely have to take with you. Keep only the things that you find beauti-ful or useful and plan to donate, sell or pass the remainder on to your children, relatives or friends. Please remember that just because you are giving up an item does not mean that you are giving up the memory associated with the item. We have two different ways of looking at an issue, two different points of view, but one common belief: Aging gracefully can be done in a positive and individual manner.

We will be sharing more tips from each view-point in future issues of jody magazine. If you would like information on a senior move, contact Tara Holman at 334-798-1589 or [email protected]. If you would like information on making your home barrier free, contact Lisa at 334-791-8819 or [email protected]
