South Africa was "discovered" by Bartholomew Dias, in 1488, who arrived at Robben Island (today’s cape town), in his abortive trip to India. The island was for many years, used by Portuguese, British and Dutch as a refueling station. Apartheid

Apartheid was a system of racial segregation from 1948 to 1994 adopted by successive National Party governments in South Africa, where the rights of the vast majority of residents have been curtailed by the government formed by the white minority.

• South Africa is a vast country with great diversity of habitats and peoples who for centuries have been leaving their mark.

• South Africa is known for its diversity of cultures, languages and religious beliefs.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is the first in the history of world football's governing body to be held in Africa.

The official mascot for the 2010 World Cup was Zakumi.

His name came from "ZA" (the international abbreviation for South Africa) and the term “kumi”, which means "ten" in various African languages. The mascot's colours reflected those of the host nation's playing strip – yellow and green.

The match ball for the 2010 World Cup, manufactured by Adidas, is named the Jabulani, which means "bringing joy to everyone" in Zulu.

Vuvuzela is most used at soccer matches in South Africa, and it has become a symbol of South African soccer in the stadiums are filled with its loud and raucous sound that reflects the exhilaration of supporters.

A lesser-known fact on South Africa is that it has achieved steady economic growth in gross domestic product (GDP) since the late 90s. The country’s central bank is the Reserve Bank.Population:

The South African population is about 49 million people.

Languages:South Africa is a multi-lingual country and there are 11 official languages including: English, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.

Religions:

Almost 80% of South Africa's population is Christian. Other major religious groups include Hindus, Muslims, Jews and Buddhists.
