Welcome to Term 4

Welcome to term four where there are many good things to look forward two including the grade

3-6 camp, the Orbost Flower Show, P-2 sleep over, and the concert and awards night. The

banner made for flower show is this week’s front cover and I think it accurately reflects the

inclusive nature of the school.

VCE exams

The VCE exams will begin soon and we wish our twelve students Bianca Findlay, Taliah Smith and

Bart Stephenson the best of luck with the exams. It is very stressful time for them. We welcome

back Jenny Miralles, this time as our VCE examiner.

Priority Review

Thanks to all students, staff, parents, guardians and school councillors who participated in the

priority review process. Over four days the school’s performance was thoroughly analysed.

Robert Stephens, the reviewer, and Heather MacAlister, Senior Educational Improvement Leader,

were very insightful into the school and helpful with planning the next steps of our growth. I’m

looking forward to publishing what will be a very positive report when it’s completed in

December. Thanks to the staff who have worked so hard to keep ensuring the progress in

‘evidenced based teaching practice’ necessary for a modern school in changing times. Also

thanks to parents and carers for their support and involvement over the last couple of years (and

their positive responses in the Parent Opinion Surveys)

All the members of a community are important in the lives of our young people Last year we introduced a new student survey to help improve their sense of wellbeing: called the

MDI (Middle Years Development Instrument) and this year we will be surveying all students from

year 4 to year 9. This may help us target how we use our resources and the areas we should

focus on. The research behind this program shows that there is a whole range of elements

necessary in developing a positive life, these include optimism, self-esteem, empathy, pro social

behaviour, connectedness to adults at home, connectedness to adults in the school and the

community, peer belonging and friendship. Also important are how afterschool time is used,

and the amount of breakfast and sleep students have.

Don’t hesitate to contact me at the school if you any questions about this.

VCE OE Light to Light Walk:

Green Cape to Ben Boyd Tower

On September 19th to September 21st the

VCE Outdoor Ed class which consisted of

Bart Stephenson, Bianca Findlay, Taliah

Smith, Mrs Liza Spink, and Mr Anthony

Stephenson, completed a three day hike

from Green Cape to Ben Boyd tower often

called the Light to Light Walk.

On the first day we dropped off water at

Salt water Creek campsite and started walking from Green Cape Lighthouse we walked past the

cemetery of the victims of the Ly EE Moon shipwreck through heathland and melaleuca forests

to the beautiful camping ground at Bittangabee. We had lots of time to explore the coast and

saw lots of whales in the ocean. After a cold night in the tents we packed up our camp very

early and were walking by 7.30

am—that day was the big walk

with 16 kms to complete. What a

day for seeing animals, within an

hour we came across a beautiful

diamond python lying on the

rocky shore. We also saw more

black snakes, whales, dolphins

and seals. We had lunch at

Saltwater Creek and resupplied

our water bottles with the water

we had dropped off the day before. After a long days walk we camped on the spectacular

Mowarry beach, we had time to explore the rocky headlands. Lots of fish jumping and a shark

cruising in the shallows.

Another cool night and early start across bright red rocks and a variety of ecosystems we

arrived at Ben Boyd Tower after an easy 8 km walk. Thanks to Anthony Stephenson who

accompanied us on our hike and to the students who were very organised and walked so well on

the hike. Special thanks to Tammy Whitford who dropped us off at Green Cape and picked us

up at Ben Boyd

Tower.

Student Highlights:

the fantastic scenery,

the huge number of

animal species we

saw, especially the

diamond python and

whales.

Year 8 CAPE CONRAN CAMP

On Wednesday September 20th to Friday

September 22nd the Year 8’s, Mrs

Stephenson and Mr Hubble left Cann

River for a three day camp at Cape

Conran. First stop was Orbost and a visit

to the Gem gallery where Mr Gordon

Andrews told us interesting information

about their fabulous gem collection. We

all had separate lists for the food we

would need on the camp and split up in

the supermarket and bought supplies for 3 days. We travelled to Marlo and completed the lovely

foreshore walk to MOTS beach.

Accommodation was in the Oliveberry Lodge at Cape Conran with

lots of room and a great kitchen to prepare meals.

The next few days were taken up with a surfing lesson and lots of

beach games, spotlight (hyacky), and walks to Cowrie Bay and

Salmon Rocks. Painting coastal landscapes with water colours. The

students Chloe, Zeara, Alexis, Taylah and Rhys were fantastic in

completing their various duties including cooking meals, doing

dishes and keeping their rooms tidy. Thanks to all the students and

staff for a great camp.
